“I don’t feel like going today,” I tell Brooke when she comes asking if I’d be going college today. Her eyebrows come together before she asks, “Why?”

“I have a lot of work to do, Brooke,” I tell her.

“But don’t you always have work to do?” She questions, crossing her arms over her chest. I sigh before answering her back, “I have a lot to catch up, Brooke and Alpha Miles have informed me this morning that the council has chosen Walkers to host the Annual Alpha Meet. He wants me to be there in a couple of days,”

Her lips instantly form an ‘o’ and her arms drop from her chest. I think I have convinced her enough.

“For how many days will you be gone?” She asks.

“Four days,” I shrug and she mutters something about telling Davis about this. While I’ll be gone, Davis has to do all my duties. The workload will increase for them but I know that I’d be facing hell in Walkers anyway.

The Annual Alpha meet is a very prestigious event and it’s usually very stressful for the pack that hosts it. The werewolf council chooses the pack each year. This year our pack at the south has been chosen.

Alpha Miles and Gamma MJ are already there. As the Beta of the pack, I need to be there too. Though I don’t want to go. With things messed up here, I don’t think I’ll be able to concentrate there.

“What’s the situation with Cybele?” She asks, unknown of what has happened between us.

“I don’t want to talk about that now. I am busy,” I mutter, checking the email. She stares at me before deciding to leave me. To be honest, I am puzzled about the situation.

I don’t know what to do. She probably hates me but I couldn’t help but wonder if she feels the pulls at all. Since she is a human, it makes it harder for me to guess.

I have decided to give her some space. Since I’d be gone for the Alpha meet, I think she’d be left with enough time to think.

I am starting to hate myself because of the kiss. Chance regrets it too. I want to apologize to her but she doesn’t want to talk to me at all. This has been keeping me up at night.

I couldn’t speak to Brooke about this. She may jump into the situation and try to persuade Cybele, which could be worse.

I’d also have to make sure that Tiffany doesn’t get to know about this. She is the vulture, preying for my mate. She has seen Cybele, but she doesn’t know that she is my mate. I hope she doesn’t find out about this while I am gone.

The rest of the day I struggle to catch up. By evening, I manage to complete the college assignment and submit them online.

For the most part of the night, I talk to Alpha Miles over the phone and discuss the meet. This is the first Alpha meet for me. Our pack has held the meet many times previously but it’s the first time when I am going to participate in it.

In the next couple of days, I don’t go to college. I stay at the pack and try to get as much done as possible. Meanwhile, it’s only Brooke who goes to college. Every day I am tempted to ask her about Cybele but I don’t.

It’s Friday when I am finally leaving for Walkers’ territory. It only takes me a couple of hours to fly there.

By midnight, I reach Walkers. After trying to sleep for the whole night, I meet Alpha Miles and Gamma MJ the next morning. We instantly get to work.

The huge load of work keeps me occupied for the most part. I didn’t get much time to think about her for the next couple of days.

When the day of the Annual Alpha meet finally arrives, everyone is anxious and is nervous to get things done at the last minute.

First, the top officials of the werewolf council arrive, followed by the Alphas from all over the world. The meeting starts in the afternoon and continues until the evening.

I have to sit through everything. As everything is new to me, I try to learn as much as possible. I can feel the weight of expectations on me for being a new Beta of my pack.

As the day rolls towards its end, I feel the energy drain out of me. We have been very busy for the past couple of days. After this meeting ends, we will have another meeting tomorrow before the Meet finally ends.

“Beta Emerson,” One of the top officials of the werewolf council approaches me after the meeting is finished. He is an old and very powerful wolf. I greet him respectfully.

“How are you doing?” He asks me keenly and I answer as formally as possible, “I am fine, Sir. What about you?”

“I am fine though, I wanted to talk about your situation…” He utters while watching me warily. His pensive eyes never slip from my face.

“Yes,”

“You’re aware of the time period allotted to you by the council to chose a mate, right?” He asks pointedly. I gulp deeply and clench my fists.

“Yes, I am aware,” I informed him calmly.

“I hope you’re using it to make wise decisions. The she-wolf chosen for you by us is very capable. I hope you would consider our recommendation for the betterment of your pack,” He speaks crisply.

“I hold high respect for the Council, Sir but I wouldn’t be taking your recommendation,” I inform him and suddenly see his eyebrows come together while his eyes grow more pensive.

The air grows more stern and tense around us.

“Why is it, Beta Emerson?” He asks urgently.

“I have found my mate, sir,” I answer him after a momentary silence. His eyes grow wider before he counters, “Then why weren’t we informed?”

Trying my best to keep my calm, I breathe, “We haven’t mated yet,”

“What’s the excuse?” I could feel the conversation getting more and more heated. My wolf is pacing inside me. All the questions are agitating us.

“She is a human, sir,” At this, the expression that climbs his face is enough for me to foresee a more tense and heated conversation.
