Chapter 38

Belle: Mr. Kyelef, I resigned from the Montenegro mansion a few days ago, and I’m working at a restaurant now. My old self would have told you that I was going back to the streets, but now I have a very different outlook on life, and it’s all thanks to you. Soon, I’ll start paying for my grandfather’s hospital bills, so don’t worry about me. I hope you find happiness...

I read the message, and my brow furrowed. Just as I was about to reply, I felt Belladona jump on me, hugging me. She leaned on my shoulder and asked,

“What have you been reading for so long?” I quickly put my phone away and turned to her.

“Nothing. You look... stunning.” She smiled brightly, spinning around so I could see her tight black sequined dress. Her chestnut hair made her green eyes stand out even more. Then I remembered Belle and her bright eyes filled with surprise at every little thing, her gaze so innocent and pure. Now, I felt guilty for leaving her alone... what if something happened to her because of me?

“What’s wrong, Kyelef? Aren’t you going to say anything?”

“You look fantastic, as always.”

“Thank you. Now let’s go, I want to be the most beautiful couple at the gala,” she said with a sweet smile, but that was the last thing Belladona truly was. She was a determined, eloquent, charming woman with disarming beauty, but she was also manipulative, malicious, with a brilliant mind. It could be frightening to be her enemy, but despite all that, we had known each other since she was a little girl.

“Have you talked to your brother? He’s not answering my calls.”

“No, you know how Cesar is…”

“And about that woman, do you know anything?” she said with disdain as the car drove us to the gala.

“Why are you so interested in that woman? Just forget about her; no one can compare to you... and Cesar knows that,” I saw her look out the window and smile.

“I already know that, silly, but I want to know who was stupid enough to get involved with a man who is clearly out of her league.”

“Belladona, you still haven’t told me why Cesar broke up with you, why you left. You don’t know how much I searched for you, thinking that he…”

She burst out laughing and said,

“What did you think? That he murdered me? It was a mistake I made in his business. He didn’t forgive me and exiled me to make me suffer. When his anger passes, he’ll talk to me again.” I clenched my fists in anger as Belladona rested her head on my shoulder.

“But you’re here, Kyelef... always my defender, my confidant, my best friend. What would I do without you...?” she said, taking my hand affectionately.

“You deserve something better...” I whispered. Belladona lifted her head from my shoulder, and with a smile, she whispered close to my ear,

“Who... you?” She leaned in as if to kiss me, then burst out laughing, pushing me aside.

“Don’t be so gullible...” she said, laughing. “I treasure our friendship, so if you care about me, you’ll tell me what you’re hiding. And as you promised, you’ll give me the identity of the woman Cesar is with.” Surprised, I looked at her smiling at me before she rested her head on my shoulder again.

“What... what are you talking about?”

“Kyelef, I know you well enough to know that you’re hiding something from me. Don’t lie to me... Or I’ll start thinking that what you’re hiding is more serious than I thought.” This was the real Belladona sweet as she was venomous.
