Chapter 84

I looked at the papers Belladona had given me, and for a moment, the thought of leaving crossed my mind, but that wouldn’t solve my problems. All I could think about now was my grandfather, and I couldn’t even talk about it with anyone, feeling that someone had my back. Every time I thought I could reach Mr. Cesar, a blow of reality, told me that we were too far from each other. Wishing to be by his side, he started to suffocate me… when the elevator doors opened, I found myself face to face with Keylef, who saw me crying.
“Belle, what’s wrong? Something happened,” he said. And unable to hold it in, I threw myself into his arms and cried.
“My grandfather… he’s no longer my grandfather, he has forgotten me, he’s forgotten me… I’m alone again,” I said.
“Calm down… we’ll find a way to fix this,” he reassured me.

Cesar.
I rested my hand on the table, feeling my heart race. I clenched my fist, trying to lighten the anger I felt. When I turned, a little calmer, I saw Belladona caressing my shoulder. I quickly pulled away and snapped at her.
“What are you doing?”
“Am I helping you calm down, Cesar? Do you hate that I stayed?” she asked. I looked up, and Belle was no longer in the room. Damn.
“Where’s Belle? She always disappears from my sight when I’m not looking,” I said. Just as I was about to leave, Belladona grabbed my arms.
“What the hell are you playing at, Cesar?” she asked.
“What do you want, Belladona?” I replied.
“Seriously, Cesar, what you said in this meeting is the most ridiculous thing you’ve said in a long time. You’re blinded by a temporary infatuation. And I think I’m done with this. I thought you’d reconsider your decision, but I think I need to remind you what your family wanted for you…” she said. A sudden jolt hit me in the chest, and I looked at her seriously.
“You’ve forgotten,” I said.
“No, not until you deceived me,” she replied.
“It was a mistake, and you know I regret it…” I said.
“You’re not what I want for my life, because every time I see you, I get this immense urge to kill you. I won’t marry you, Belladona,” she said.
“Even if our families said so?” I asked.
“Even then… I don’t even want to see you,” I said. I saw her clench her jaw and let go.
“You’ll regret this decision, I swear to God… You don’t want me as your enemy, Cesar, I can do a lot of damage,” she warned.
“Don’t threaten me, Belladona, the only one who needs to be careful here is you,” I said, pushing her aside roughly and making my way out.
“I swear to you, Cesar Montenegro! Remember my words… You’ll have to come looking for me,” she shouted.

Keylef.
When we arrived at the hospital, Belle had calmed down. She was nervous, and her hands were shaking like a leaf. The poor thing was so worried that I couldn’t help but calm her down by taking her hand. She was surprised, and when she looked at me, she gave a faint smile.
“How is the patient?” I asked.
“We’ve done the necessary tests, but there are still some psychological ones that might take longer,” the doctor replied.
“Don’t worry about the money, I’ll cover all the expenses,” I said.
“It’s not necessary, Mr. Keylef. They pay me very well at Mr. Cesar’s company,” the doctor said.
“It doesn’t matter, I want to help. Please tell us the diagnosis from the tests you’ve just done,” I insisted.
“It’s amnesia, but we don’t know the cause yet, whether it’s hereditary, accidental, or we have to rule out that it’s due to a severe shock. Whatever it is, it’s still too early for a premature diagnosis,” the doctor explained.
“And how is the patient doing?” I asked.
“He asks a lot about his family and his son,” the doctor said. I looked at Belle, and she lowered her gaze sadly.
“Do you know anything about who his family is?” I asked.
“They’re all dead…” the doctor replied.
“What? No one’s left. How is that possible? What is his family’s name?” I asked in disbelief.
“The Santorini family,” the doctor said. I frowned, incredulous, at hearing that last name.
