Chapter 56
Cesar
Belle’s call was strange, so much so that I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I considered calling her back, but as usual, work seemed never-ending. To make matters worse, I had to endure Belladona’s presence since her family was an investor in F.F. I was about to call Joffre to check if everything was fine at home, but it was time for the meeting, so I put it off for later.
"Well, it seems things aren’t going well at the company."
"It’s just a rough patch; that’s why I came to investigate it myself," I said as I hurried towards my car, the cool night breeze hitting my face.
"Why the rush? We should go to dinner." She checked her watch, and I quickly replied.
"I’m not hungry. Where should I drop you off?"
"Always so cold, the Montreal Hotel…" She got into the car, and I followed.
"Is someone waiting for you at the hotel? Perhaps a woman…?"
"Don’t start, Belladona; you’re the last person I want to hear complaints from."
"I’m not complaining, don’t get it wrong. I just find it curious to see you in such a hurry."
"I have important things to do, that’s all."
"And that’s why you keep checking your watch and your phone so much? Did you promise someone you’d call…? Maybe that cheap knockoff of mine." I glared at her, and she smiled, satisfied with provoking me.
"Well… it seems I hit the mark. If it was about my face, you didn’t need to find someone who looks like me. You always have me at your disposal," she said, running her hand across my chest. I grabbed her hand firmly, looking her in the eyes.
"Don’t tempt me, Belladona… I’m not in the mood for your games. The only reason I still respect you is because of the strong friendship my family had with yours, but beyond that, what we had ended because of you, don’t forget that…" I pushed her hand away roughly and adjusted my shirt.
"We’ve arrived. Have a good night, Belladona."
"Good night, Cesar…" She got out, and the car drove off.

When I got to my hotel room, I checked the time, and it was too late to make a call to the United States, so I decided to leave it for tomorrow. I didn’t want to wake Belle. But the next day started with more long meetings and discussions that seemed to have no solution, and before I knew it, three days had passed since Belle’s strange call. I checked my phone and saw a few missed calls from Joffre. That worried me, so I quickly called him back.
"Master Cesar, I’m glad you finally called me back."
"What happened, Joffre?"
"Your aunt Hilda came to the mansion."
"Why on earth did she go to the mansion?"
"It seems someone told her that a woman was living in the mansion, believing herself to be the new owner of everything." I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling a migraine coming on.
"What are you saying?"
"That’s not the worst of it. She entered the house and saw Miss Belle in your room, and things didn’t end well."
"Tell me what happened!"
"She dragged her out of the mansion, and not content with that, everyone found out about the scandal."
"Where is Belle?"
"I don’t know… I had to follow Mrs. Hilda’s orders. She instructed me not to let Belle in while she was there. After that, I don’t know anything about Miss Belle."
"Damn it… Shit!" I threw the phone hard against the wall, shattering it. How did this happen? I needed to go back… and finally set things right.
