Chapter 37 get out of jail free card

…Jenna POV…
I never thought that I would see this man again. Just standing in front of him is making my skin crawl. What makes it even worse is that goddamn wicked smile that he has on his face. I know Brendan very well and what I know is that he has done something that has brought him great pleasure. Now, I find myself alone in a room with him while Brooke is trying to convince the guard to let her in.
The quicker I can get this over with, the better.
I never thought that I would have to come crawling for help from this monster. It seems that as far as I go, I am just collecting them. Am I truly such a bad woman that I turn men into this? God knows I have already ruined Tyler s life; we still don t know how much the shot to his head has affected his brain function.
And now, the man is somewhere, and I do not even make to think that he is suffering torture. So it is with a very nervous and somewhat heavy heart that I sit across from him at the table.
"I knew that you would come back crawling one day," he smirks as he tries to reach out for my hand.
I immediately snap back at him, "I am not here for you, Brendan."
"Then what does the little princess want?"
"Where is Mark?"
"Ah, don t tell me you are already cheating on that husband of yours."
"Where is Mark?"
He cocks his head and only but smiles at me, "Why would I know where Mark is? The last time I check, you were the one that got him locked up in here."
"He deserved to be in here."
"And so do you, little princess. Both of you came up with that little plan. You thought you could take daddy s money and run away with my best friend. Guess your dear old sheriff does not match up, and now you are running back to him."
I only but grind on my teeth as I mumble under my breath, "Glad to see that you are still an asshole. Now tell me, where is Mark?"
"Well, he is not here anymore, so sorry little princess, I cannot help you with that."
But his words are not even done before I caught onto what he has been saying, "What do you mean here?"
"Ah, you did not know? If you came to visit your dear fiancé like you are supposed to, then you would have known that he was in this very prison."
"When? How?"
"Guess the man knew the right people in high places."
This brings a cold shiver up my spine as I think back at his first plan. He was going to get some Mafia Boss to take a hit out on my parents, but he never had the money to go through with the plan, so he ended up doing it himself. I hate to think that he has gotten out at the hands of the very man that was going to kill my family. This means that Tyler is in even more danger than what I thought.
But my thoughts do not go unnoticed as Brendan starts to talk, "The man is out for revenge, little princess. If I were you, then I would run; you will never see that husband of yours again."
"Cut the bullshit, Brendan, and just tell me where I can find Mark?"
"Don t worry; he will find you sooner or later; just wait until that other woman leaves your side."
"What are you talking about?"
He throws his head back as he nearly topples over from laughter, "That sheriff that has been following you around. She is your husband s sister, as I understand?"
It only then dawns on me that I am not going to get anything from Brendan; he is part of this; he is out for his own revenge. I have truly created two more monsters. How can I convince him that this is the wrong way to solve our problems?
"Brendan, please, can we just talk. You don t have to do this."
He shakes his head at me and talks slowly, "This is the only way to do this."
I shift my chair a bit closer to him and reach out for his hand. His first instinct is to pull away, but then he allows me to take it, "What can I do to make this right?"
"What do you think you can do, Jenna? You are the reason that I am here?"
I drop my hand and look in disgust to where I am holding his hand, "I am sorry. I made a mistake." I take one deep breath and nearly choke on what I am about to say, "Please forgive me. You know that I love you."
His eyes grow wide, and I can see there is a glimmer that appears from beneath, "You are fucking lying."
"I am not. I promise you. You know that I have always loved you."
I see as the smile grows around the corners of his mouth as he answers with satisfaction, "I knew that you would come to your senses one day."
I look back at the door, trying to find Brooke standing there, but she is nowhere in sight. Then I look back to Brendan and softly whisper to him, "What can I do to get you out of here?"
He looks at me rather shocked and squeezes my hands even harder, "You will do that for me? You will get me out?"
"I will do anything for you, now tell me what I must do?"
I turn his head around to see if the guard is listening, then he whispers in my ear. I listen as he mumbles a number over and over until I nod my head.
"Okay, I will get it done as soon as I leave here."
Then much to my own disgust, he leans forward and places a firm kiss on my lips.
After another five minutes, I say my goodbye to him, feeling satisfied that I am doing the right thing.
Once we are outside, Brooke turns to me and cocks her head, "What the fuck happened in there? Did he tell you where Mark is?"
"He does not know where Mark is. He has not seen since before he was taken to prison."
"Then what the fuck was all that holding hands about?"
I only but ignore her and carry on walking to the car.
I never knew that I would have had to come to such a decision in my life. Never did I think that I would have to choose between Tyler and someone else again. I thought that Tyler and I had our happily ever after. Guess the only happily ever after you will get with me is a whole bunch of sorrow and a broken heart.
My heart breaks to think when Tyler has to find out what I have done. The thing is that I did not have any other choice. I believe that he would one day see that I did it for him. That is if he will ever get out safely, but I am sure if I do what I am about to do that he would.
So after a quiet but somber drive home, we find the Marshall waiting for us. Brooke informs him of what we have come up with, and they disappear off further into the property.
As soon as I am satisfied that they cannot hear or see me, I take my phone out from my handbag. It is with hesitating but trembling fingers that I dial the number that Brendan mumbled to me. It only takes but a few minutes for the call to be answered. From the other side of the line, I hear a man speak that I have never heard before.
Once I feel that I can breathe, I tell him exactly what Brendan told me.
