Chapter 38 the price of freedom
How far are you willing to go to save the one you love?
I am about to find out…
I have just crossed the line between what is wrong and what is right. Not only am I putting my own life on the line, but I am not sure if it is going to save Tyler. But all I know is that at least I need to try.
So as I drop the call, I can see Brooke and the Marshall coming back into the kitchen. Brooke looks at me with a curious frown on her face and wastes no time in asking, "What are you up to, Jenna?"
I take a deep breath and try my best not to break eye contact, "Nothing. I just phoned Sandra to give her an update."
She only but shakes her head and raises the pitch of her voice, "Please do not tell anyone about this. Why can t risk it getting out to the papers."
I immediately snap back at her, "Sandra is a friend. She will not tell anyone."
With that, I spin on my heels and grab my car keys, but before I can even step out the door, Brooke is in front of me, "Where do you think you are going?"
"I am going out," I push past her. "Or can I not go to the store?"
She frowns at me and moves out of my way, "Don t go and do something stupid."
I only but ignore her and make my way to the car. I have no choice; I have to do this; this is the only way that I can save Tyler. So with my clear intention in mind, I make my way into the city. The faster I can get this done, then the better.
It takes me less time than normal, and I find myself stopping at my destination. As I walk inside, it feels that every eye in the place is on me. It feels as if they know what I am going to do. I only but shake my head and clear all the what-ifs from out of my mind.
As soon as I approach the teller, I give her my brightest smile, "I need to transfer money into this account."
I hand her the piece of paper where I scribbled the numbers on earlier on. But when she sees the amount, her eyes only but grow wider, "Mam, are you sure you want to transfer such a big amount?"
I look at her in clear irritation, "Why? Is it going to be a problem?"
"I need to clear it with my manager first."
I snap at her as I slam my hand down on the counter, "It is my goddamn money; just transfer it into the account."
With that, the manager approaches the teller and tries to put on a fake smile, "Is there a problem here."
The teller shows him the piece of paper, and he too looks at me with questioning eyes, "Mrs. Moore, this is a rather large amount.? I need to ask what this transaction is for?"
I take a deep breath and look him firm in the face, "It is a loan to a friend for personal reasons. Now I don t see why this should be a problem."
The manager only but nods his head and shows for the teller to continue. Much to my relief, I see how she punches in the transaction until I get the confirmation that it has been done.
Not even five minutes later, I get a call from a number that is unknown, but I soon remember that it is the one that I dial at home. The man on the other side only says three words, "It is done."
Three-hundred-thousand dollars…
Is that what Tyler s life is worth.
The fact is, his life is priceless.
But now comes the hard part, I need to go back; I need to go see Brendan again.
I have made a deal with a monster, and it is my time to fulfill it. I know that Tyler will never forgive me; god, I don t think he will even understand. All I want is for him to get home safely after this.
So as I soon find myself back at the prison, I am patiently sitting outside in my car. Any moment now, Brendan will come walking through those gates. I have just paid for his freedom, and he promised that he would tell Mark to let Tyler go. I just hope this man is not going to go back on his word.
Yes, I have made a stupid decision, and it will be something that I need to live with.
Then as I look back again, I can see the gate open, and out comes Brendan with a huge smile on his face. The man that I just paid got him out on 'good behavior. It is really true that money can buy anything.
I watch as he nearly runs over to the car, and as he gets in, he tries to pull me into his arms, "I knew that you would come to your senses."
I reluctantly give him a hug, and with a hesitant breath, I ask him the most important question of them all, "Are you going to let Tyler go?"
He only but laughs at me, "Why would you want him alive if you are coming with me?"
"I at least owe him something for leaving him like this."
Brendan leans in closer and gives me a kiss, then he takes my phone and starts typing. "Here, this is where you will find him."
With that, I immediately send the message to Brooke. I close my eyes and pray that Tyler will forgive me as I slowly pull out the parking with Brendan.
Not only did I buy Tyler s freedom, but I gave myself to the man that I hate the most.
…Tyler POV…
There are moments that you can never be happier about, a bit terrified but mostly happy about. While Clara has been too busy throwing her ass at me, and Mark too busy hitting the shit out of me, none of them heard someone coming through the door.
It is Brooke and the Marshall that I phoned about the tail that we picked up a few days ago. Yes, I am relieved that they are here, but yet I am terrified of what is about to happen.
The Marshall is the first to speak, "Mark, I would suggest that you drop that gun and step away from Tyler."
With that, Clara and Mark spin on their heels. I have never seen such a shocked expression on someone s face.
I can't help but laugh at their faces, "As they say, I told you so."
Clara looks at Brooke, "And what is your pretty face going to do with that gun?"
"A lot more than you seeing that your safety is on."
"I don't need a safety if I got Mark."
Then just as they are about to take a stance, two more men enter with their guns pointed at them.
"Drop it, Mark," Brooke says. "I think you have four big problems in the room, and they ain't going away."
And much to my surprise at first, then second rather big amusement, I hear Clara beg, "Please let me go; I won't say a thing."
"Sorry, but I can't do that," Brooke only but grunts at her.
The young guy comes to untie me while the two others go to wrestle and tie Mark up. Brooke, not concentrating on Clara but looking at me, does not notice Clara taking the gun's safety and pointing it at her.
"Brooke!"
Brooke turns around.
The basement goes completely silent; all you can hear is a gunshot and then another echo through the room.?
"Brooke!"
