Chapter 16
I was in the middle of having a serious starring competition. My opponent? None other than the notorious clock. Was I winning? I'm pretty sure I was. Although time still wasn't going by any faster. It's moments like this were I wish the school day never ended just so I didn't have to sit here in a quiet room while being bored out of my mind.
This is all his fault. Sure I told him to fuck off, but I wouldn't have gotten in that much trouble if Finn had just let me talk our way out of it. He could have talked us out of it too. If anything, he was the one who was slicker with words. But no. He only made it worse just to annoy me. He must not have been lying when he said he hates me more than he loves himself. And let me tell you from experience; Finn loves himself a whole damn lot.
I lost my staring contest when a piece of paper hit my cheek. I whiped my head around to my right with a glare already in my eyes and a scowl on my lips. Finn was sitting with two desks between us and his feet kicked up on the top while he leaned back in the chair. His eyes sparked with mischief and it scared me.
"Time doesn't go faster if you watch the clock." He mused like I was an idiot. His pink lips had the same sparkle of amusement now. Finn wasn't in detention often because he always had practice, but I had a feeling he was somewhat familiar with the concept. After all, he seemed to be a professional at entertaining himself with nothing.
"Nothing better to do, Riley." I sighed and turned back to the clock with folded arms. The teacher had left five minutes ago and we still had two hours left. I just knew that we would have to stay late at practice on top of that. Coach wouldn't let us slack because we got in trouble. We weren't even supposed to be talking in the first place so I didn't give Finn more amo to respond with.
"I can think of something much better to do." He said casually. Well, my plan backfired. If he has stated it any other way, I would have assumed he was setting up for a sexual joke but it didn't seem like it this time. I raised an eyebrow, signaling for him to continue. "We could get out of here. I'm hungry and we're going to have to stay late tonight for practice. Don't give me that look. I've done this before. No one will be back for at least an hour and a half." He must have seen the hesitation on my face because he switched to convincing mode mid way through his sentence.
"Come on. There's a really good Chinese place down the road and I feel like being a fat ass today. There's orange chicken and sesame bean balls. Fuck my mouth is watering just thinking about it."
I knew what he was doing. He was trying to trick me into thinking I was hungry by bribing me with fried goodness. Begrudgingly I admitted to myself that it was working. Maybe I had a sign on my head the said 'food is the way to my heart'. "Fine." I muttered but he interrupted with a small fist bump to the air. "You're such a nerd," I laughed before continuing. "Only an hour and a half. We need to be back in time to not get our asses kicked. Or else there will be quote on quote 'major consequences'." I warned while getting up.
Finn wasted no time because he was out of his seat and had both our bags over each of his shoulders before I even slipped my phone out of my pocket. He really didn't want me changing my mind. I don't see why he couldn't go alone. He probably thought I would rat him out or something.
After all, we were still on very shaky ground.
We hadn't had an actual disagreement besides our teasing since we exploded on each other. I honestly didn't know if we would ever be friends, but it seemed like we were starting to get close to a semblance of that. If he hadn't been such a dick when we met, we would most defiantly be friends. Sadly, first impressions tend to stick around for bettor or for worse.
I walked next to Finn as he carried our backpacks down the hallway. He didn't need to carry mine but it was a nice gesture. Finn probably didn't mean it like that though; he just wanted to get out of here already.
School had ended just twenty minutes ago so it was no big deal that two students were still wondering the halls. Had it been 4 in the afternoon, then we might look a little suspicious. Either way, we escaped the school without a hitch.
Finn pushed open the sleek light grey metal doors with his hip and I held it open for myself as the warm air hit my skin. It was October so the beaches were frozen but the air was sweltering. I had never seen such a bipolar climate as the one in Connecticut. One minute it's freezing and the next it's a damn heat wave. Don't even get me started on the fucking rain.
I guess I had just assumed that we would be taking my car because I asked, "Where are we going?" when I saw we were headed towards the cars near the football field instead of the main student lot.
Finn glanced at me over his shoulder with an expression that screamed 'are you stupid' before answering in a blas茅 tone. "My car."
I don't think I had ever seen Finn drive anywhere. Then again, I didn't exactly track his departure and arrival at the places we went. "You have a car? Why the hell do I always have to drive the four of us places?" I complained as we reached a white Range Rover.
A Range Rover.
And this bitch made me drive us around in my Jeep.
Finn threw our bags in the back seat and we climbed into the front. When I shut the door, I still had in incredulous look on my face.
"Chris has a motorcycle; so no. Sam has a sedan; so no. Me? I just like making you drive me places. Besides, it's easier when you choufur us around." He responded with a shrug.
"I am never driving you anywhere ever again." I huffed and crossed my arms after buckling. Finn laughed at me and pulled out of the parking space.
"If that's what you think, princess. If that's what you think."
We left the school lot and I couldn't help but feel excitement in my stomach.
I just hopped I wouldn't regret this.
****
"Okay. I have to admit this was worth it." I practically moaned while biting into a sesame bean ball. This was my favorite part of Chinese food. The red bean paste inside the chewy dough was to die for. It seemed Finn shared the same sentiment because he looked to be thoroughly enjoying it too.
"So you admit I was right?" He said with a cocked eyebrow.
I finished chewing and shook my head. "No. I said you had a good idea. One good idea. I never said anything about you being right." I popped another in my mouth and Finn eyed me.
"That comment I made about you orgasming at practice? I was wrong. This is your orgasm face." He pointed out with a small smile on his face. It was just enough for his dimples to show and it drove me crazy. I really needed to hit that.
My mouth formed an unbelievable 'O' and I reached for a napkin before making a ball and throwing it at him. He jumped a little but deflected it perfectly before breaking out into a full on beautiful smile and laughing. "Close the mouth, sweetheart. Or I might just have to do something about it." My eyes widened even more at the implication and I threw another napkin ball at him while clamping my mouth closed. He was an idiot.
When he sobered up, he continued making my cheeks flame up. "You know, now I've seen the moan, the 'fuck me harder' face, and I've felt up that body when you were giving me a lap dance. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you want me."
I rolled my eyes and scoffed, trying to play it off cool. "If I wanted you, I would already have you. You see this?" I gestured to my body. "Boy magnet."
He smirked and raised an eyebrow. Finn looked perfect with his damn beautiful bone structure. "Magnet huh? If you're trying to make me jealous it isn't working."
"And what would you have to be jealous about?" I quirked an eyebrow and crossed my arms on the edge of the table. I could feel a slight smile start to work it's way onto my face but I tried to suppress it.
"No reason. Just trying to understand how your brain works." He said with a shrug. I muttered an 'uh huh sure' before the waitress interrupted us with the bill.
"I just want to say, you two are adorable. How long have you been dating?" My eyes bulged for the second time this afternoon and I choked on air. Finn bit out a sharp laugh and I couldn't help but laugh once I got over my choking fit. The waitress looked at us with drawn brows like we were crazy. We probably were.
"I'm sorry." I said between laughs.
"Did you think we're together?" Finn finished the sentence for me, suppressing his own amusement.
"Never in a million years." We both said at the same time before snapping a sharp glance at each other.
The waitresses dark eyes darted between us before the corners of her small pink mouth tipped up. "Uh huh. Sure." It seems she wasn't the only skeptical one today. Regardless, she left us alone and we both pulled out our wallets.
I put down my blue credit card at the same time Finn put down his silver one. I could feel his glare on me. "Let me pay. I dragged you out of detention. It's only fair." He argued. He was right, but I still felt bad, even if I didn't like the man.
I loved free shit. Don't get me wrong. But then I felt weird about it like I owed him something and I just didn't want to make myself feel awkward. I was like this with everyone.
I shook my head and Finn rolled his eyes. "Just let me pay before that waitress comes back and insists we're acting like a couple again."
"Finn. Shut up. I'm paying at least half. Suck it up."
His eyes looked over my face for a second, searching for any sign of hesitation, but he only found certainty. Finn sighed and muttered an 'okay' before letting me slip both cards into the bill holder.
By the time we payed I glanced at my phone and realized it was just past five o'clock. Shit.
Well, this will be fun.
