Chapter 14
Pierre and Jacob held back their laughter while shaking their heads slowly. Jacob immediately took another sip of his coffee to get rid of the tickling feeling that wanted to make him laugh.
"Good joke, Pierre!" Jacob said. Relax and not worry too much about all the dirty thoughts of these his friends.
Realizing that he had just been laughed at, Henry immediately turned pale and tried to deny what the three of them were thinking.
"What do you mean? Who focuses on her breasts? I just thought they were quite big too especially for a small girl like her!" Henry stuttered. His face flushed with embarrassment. He had never been humiliated like this before.
The more Henry avoids it, the more visible what's really in his heart. Pierre and Jacob laughed. Henry shouldn't have to deny that for some reason he also admired Ruby's beauty.
Their laughter caught Ruby's attention who was only a few steps away from where they were gathered. She didn't expect that they were in this cafe too and something started to bother her.
Ruby and Jacob's eyes met, Ruby immediately looked away awkwardly. She had already been caught unawares that he was watching them gather and if she suddenly left now, it would look like she was avoiding them.
"Ruby...!" Jacob called. She was a little unexpected. Like it or not, Ruby had to return her gaze to them.
Ruby smiled awkwardly, as if she just knew they were here. Jacob stood up and waved his hand, hoping Ruby would be willing to join them and forget what happened.
"Oh hi Jake?" She said awkwardly. She was holding her cardigan and now it was too late for her to suddenly put it on.
She walked reluctantly towards them with a bitter smile. Her body trembled awkwardly, but she continued walking as if nothing stupid had been done this morning.
"What are you guys doing?" She asked casually as if she didn't see the four cups of coffee lying on the table.
Realizing Ruby was standing next to his seat, Henry was forced to look the other way with the arrogant style he always showed to other people outside his circle of friends.
"We're hanging out! You want to join in?" Pierre asked.
"Ah... no! I just have a little business here and-"
"The business with the Cafe Manager?"Henry chirped. It seemed that he was starting to try to reignite a debate like what happened this morning.
"No, I just-" Ruby stammered a reply. He didn't want them to know that he was applying for a job at this cafe.
Seeing her restless made Henry start to get excited about inviting her back to debate. He didn't know that Ruby now seemed to have lost a lot of her confidence.
The middle-aged man who had entered and exited with him to the manager's room walked up to him with a disgusting smile.
"Miss Cohen, I want to say that tomorrow you can go straight to work!" He said excitedly and worst of all, he couldn't read the situation.
Ruby's face turned red, it seemed there was no point in her pretending anymore. They already knew that he was applying for a job at this cafe.
Pierre and Jacob didn't seem to mind too much, but Henry, he grinned like a wolf who had found his enemy's weakness.
Ruby was frozen in place, she felt like she had lost her face. Actually, he didn't want any of his other friends to know that he was going to work here. But now, they knew even when he had just been hired.
"T-thank you!" Ruby lost her enthusiasm. She hoped that they didn't come to this cafe to apply for a job because she had a bad feeling about this. She glanced at Henry who was smiling broadly, it made her very annoyed.
"Hehehe...I'll ask Fiona to give you the uniform you'll wear tomorrow! Wait a moment, I'll call her!" He said as he walked away.
Ruby tried hard to hold back her embarrassment. He didn't know why he should feel embarrassed if he worked as a coffee shop waiter with a salary that was definitely not as big as he expected. However, seeing Henry's reaction, who seemed to really want to bring him down, hurt his pride.
"Why just stand up? Please sit down!" Henry said while holding back laughter. Ruby knew Henry was looking down on her and this was completely unacceptable. However, seeing Pierre and Jacob smiling at him made him try to be patient.
"No thanks! I'm going home now!"
"Why are you in a hurry? Didn't the manager ask you to wait for him? It would be very impolite if you suddenly left after being hired!" As he was worried, Henry teased her. Ruby hopes that she can immediately leave this place and disappear forever from the four of them, especially from Henry, the arrogant man who once lost four of his teeth as a child because of a punch he gave him.
"I'll be back tomorrow morning, so-"
"Ruby, it's okay, just sit down! We won't force you!" Pierre said.
Having no choice, Ruby was forced to pull out a chair and sit awkwardly. She felt very uncomfortable with this situation and she couldn't believe that this was how she would meet with friends she had known since she was five years old. Now she feels like a stranger.
"You need a job, right?" Jacob asked. Talking to him made Ruby feel a little calm.
"Yes, I was looking for a job and Barbara said that this cafe needed a waitress, so I came here to apply for a job!"
"Are you sure you want to work here?" Pierre asked.
"Why?"
"It's okay! It's just that you have to be careful of that old man!" He said.
"Who? You mean Mr. Manager?"
"Yes! He likes to tease women like you! So, you better be careful!"
"Flirting? What do you mean?"
"You don't understand, do you? If you say flirting, that means you have to keep your distance from him for your own good!" Henry said it loudly. He didn't understand why Ruby the head of the gang, could be so innocent like this.
Jacob and Pierre stifled laughter. Even though he always looked annoyed, they thought Henry seemed quite happy to see Ruby back in town.
"Okay, I understand! But you don't need to be so angry, right? Why have you been angry with me since yesterday? What exactly did I do wrong to you?"
"You're still asking what you did wrong? Damn it, you really don't know yourself, do you?"
