179 - Breakfast for Dinner

*You know what I love about Camille waking up from a long sleep late in the day? Breakfast for dinner. I’ve always liked breakfast for dinner, but I always feel bad about making it. - Dutch*

After sleeping for six days, there were three priorities for Camille. Brushing her teeth. Taking a shower. Eating almost everything in the house. Heavy on the carbs, thank you very much.

With the first two taken care of, she headed down to the bottom floor to take care of the last. As she was approaching the end of the stairs, she was greeted by the warm, sweet, buttery scent of pancakes. Mitch rushed over and hugged her as she stepped off the last stair and onto the hardwood floors.

Pausing at the base of the stairs, she hugged her youngest child close to her and pressed a kiss to the top of his head. She closed her eyes and breathed in his scent, it was an odd combination of pubescent sweat, hair products, deodorant and just a touch too much of his body spray. It was one of the best scents in the world.

The boy that was clinging to her trembled slightly as the young teen gave in to his tears. Nicki came over and hugged her as she laid her head on her adoptive mom’s shoulder. Camille wrapped an arm around her daughter and kissed the girl’s braids before resting her cheek against the younger woman’s head.

It was not until her stomach growled loudly that any of them moved. Nicki moved away first and swiped at the tears that were threatening to fall from her eyes. Mitch shifted to her side and guided Camille to the table.

“Oma said that you like breakfast when you wake up,” Mitch told her.

“I do,” she agreed as she slid onto the bench of their table.

Her mouth began to water as she looked at the spread in front of her. Bright colorful fruit filled a bowl in the center of the table. On either side of the fruit were platters of thick sliced bacon, sausage links and panfried ham. Cloth covered baskets held what she assumed were biscuits and there was also a bowl of sausage gravy. A platter of scrambled eggs sat at one end of the table, and another covered with shredded cheese sat at the other.

“These things,” Sid said as she placed a bowl of grits on the table, “are a little weird. I have not decided if I like them or not.”

“It’s the same for those of us who grew up eating them,” Darkness said as he sat down on the shorter end of the L-shaped bench. Leaning over, he gave his wife a quick kiss. Camille leaned into the warm embrace when he cupped her cheek. “How are you feeling?”

“A little tired, a whole lot hungry and like this came at the wrong time.”

Dutch and Chris both helped bring the last few dishes to the table. Camille eyed the platter of pancakes that her oldest brother sat in the remaining empty spot at her end of the table. Briefly, she glanced at the platter of waffles that her other brother placed at the other end.

“Celt told the judge that you had the flu and due to medical conditions, your care team-“

“That’s me,” Chris interrupted his brother.

“- advised against exposure to mitigate continued complications.” Dutch finished his statement as he flipped off his brother.

“Boys,” Sid said before they could get started with insults and eventually becoming physical. She handed a plate to Mitch with two fried eggs. He gave her a small smile in thanks.

They both gave a soft “Yes, ma’am,” as they settled at the table and the platters and bowls of food began to be passed around. Conversations flowed around Camille as she shoveled food into her mouth. When she paused to refill her plate, she looked around at her family, thankful that she had them.

“Where is Celt?”

“He had to go home for court,” Sid told her.  “Dutch called me when the urgent care doctor was going to hospitalize you. Werewolf had us flown down that morning.”

“Yeah,” Chris chuckled, “Doc was not thrilled taking my shift on such short notice. It’s a good thing that he liked you.”

“The fact that we have a ‘contingency plan’ in case you get sick really helped with the judge.” Sid smirked, “You should have heard me trying to explain your dad’s job.”

Snickers were heard all around the table and Camille was curious about what got said.

“I made DS Holdings a small venture capital group and your dad is a division president.” Sid sighed. “Then I made the mistake of telling your dad. Who told the other presidents. Who told Ryder. And…” she sighed again, “they’re looking at starting a new division.”

Camille shrugged, “You’re not far off. When you consider how many companies fall under D S H, that’s basically what they are.”

“You can get with Ryder about all that,” Dutch told his sister. “Celt is not thrilled with mom because now they are asking him business law questions and he keeps referring them to his brother.”

“But they keep calling him and not Donovan,” Camille smirked. “He hates all the business shit and Donovan loves it and hates the family law.”

Her brothers looked at her in confusion. She shrugged as she took another bite of her pancake. “Who do you think does the legal work for the company? Reviews contracts? Ensures that we follow all the laws and state regulations?”

“Never thought about it,” Dutch admitted.

“Just thought you did your,” Chris acted like he was typing on a keyboard, “computer magic and poof.”

“Poof?” she chuckled.

Both brothers shrugged and almost simultaneously said, “Poof.”

She rolled her eyes and tucked back into her plate. Eventually, they all finished with what they wanted to eat and Sid stood up. After she stretched, she grabbed her phone off the island.

“Critter, Dutch, clean the kitchen. Camille, go relax with your kids for a little bit. Darkness, do whatever the hell you want. I’m going to go take a bath and call Trigg.” Grinning, she pointed at each of her kids. “Do not disturb sign has been activated.”

“Turn the radio on,” Camille said as she popped a grape into her mouth.

Dutch watched their mother leave the area and waited for her shadow to move around the corner upstairs. “You realize that they’re going to have phone sex in your tub?”

“Not my tub,” Camille grinned at her brother. “Mine’s on the third floor.”

“It’s big enough for both of us,” Darkness grinned at the two brothers. “Want to know how I know?”

Critter shook his head while Dutch gave a shiver of disgust, and they both answered with “No.”

“I didn’t need to know that either,” Nicki told the table in general.

Mitch shook his head, “I. Am. A *Child.”

Camille turned her head and simply looked at him. He had to turn away, but she heard his laughter. When he was under control, he turned to face her and burst out laughing.
