Chapter 37

Phoenix

Luke and I are in his office when Jordan, Jamie, and two other members—whom I now know are our spies in the demon team—walk in. The air in the room thickens with tension as the door clicks shut behind them.

I don't know why Jordan suddenly reached out to me or what he wanted, but I can tell it isn't good. I've never seem them come all together like this.

Luke leans back in his chair, crossing his arms, and nods to Jordan, who takes a seat across from me. Mike and the remaining spies remain standing, their expressions guarded.

From the corner of my eye, I find several of them watching me, as if they're worrying that I might just randomly attack them.

Sometimes I wonder if I scare people the same as Loki does.

Shit, they act like this. But maybe it's a good thing, that means they won't cross me the same way they're crossing the demons.

"What is this meeting about?" I ask, staring them down.

"We need to talk about your father," Jordan begins, his voice heavy with concern. "His recent actions have stirred up a lot of shit."

I nod, feeling a knot tighten in my stomach. Yeah, this isn't good. It seems like my father is making no effort to slow down or stop his illegal activities that is putting his family in danger and will eventually get him killed.

"The demons claim this is the last time they'll deal with him," one of the spies, a tall man with a scar running down his face, interjected. "They've been spending a lot of time recruiting from the local police department. With insiders inside the police, your father is no longer necessary to them."

A chill runs down my spine. "What does that mean?" I ask, dreading the answer.

"Well...there's a possibility that they might kill him. It will be easy to cover his murder, and they can get a new Alpha King elected that aligns with their agendas."

I snarl, anger surging through me. "Insiders or not, they wouldn't be able to just get away with assassinating the Alpha King."

Jordan sighs heavily. "Well, they think they will and the risk won't stop them from trying. They'll just blame it on a rogue and move on," he points out, his voice grave.

Fuck. He's right. I'm sure they've gotten away with plenty of crime due to their connections with corrupt individuals in power. Maybe even members of the Council. I wouldn't put it past them.

Suddenly, I think of my sister and stepmother. I don't know how attached to him my sister is, but what about Christina? Will she be able to survive losing another mate? Another man that she loves?

No. I can't let that happen.

Christina is a good person from what I can see, and I know losing her would destroy Selene. I will be fine with both of my parents dead, but what about her? She's better than me, she loves more than I'll ever be capable of. She deserves better.

I decide that even if I have to keep eyes on my father 24/7, there's no way I'm going to allow the devils to assassinate him. They'll have to get through me first.

"We need to act," Luke says finally, breaking the heavy silence. "I won't allow him to die before I have the evidence to prove he killed my sister."

It's been hard to get any hard evidence when he uses others to cover his tracks.

Jordan raises a brow. "Is this about proving it or seeking justice? Because even in prison, the demons have the resources to kill him."

"Just solid proof," Luke replies. "Right?"

One of the spies, a woman with green eyes, steps forward. "We've got intel that might help," she says, placing a folder on the desk. "It's not much, but it's a start."

Luke opens the folder and skims through its contents, his brow furrowing deeper with each page. "This is good," he says, finally looking up. "But it's not enough. We need more."

"We'll keep digging," the scarred spy promises. "We've got a few leads we can follow up on."

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my breath so I don't lose control of my wolf. "What can I do?" I ask, my jaw clenched tightly.

Luke turns to me, his eyes softening. "Exactly what you're doing. Keeping Selene and her friend safe. We already have a team guarding Christina, and you've got Philip handled."

As the meeting breaks up and the others file out of the room, Luke places a reassuring hand on my shoulder. "We've got this," he says quietly. "Besides, you'll be Alpha soon. That means even more resources and connections at our disposal. We'll keep your family safe."

"And Makayla," I add.

He swallows hard, nodding. "Of course."

I don't know if he's fully accepted that she's his daughter, or still on the fence about it, but he and I are both fully committed to protecting and treating her like family.

"Well, I'm about to do some more research," Luke says, waving the folder the demons gave him. "You can go home now. I'm sure you're missing Selene."

I am missing her. So badly. I hated that Loki was the one to bring her back to Luke's house. But we had this important meeting coming up, and I had to get her and Makayla to safety.

I wonder if she misses me too. Is she thinking about me, wishing she was in my bed with my arms wrapped around her? Or my cock buried in her pussy while she sleeps?

I can't wait to be inside of her again, but I know she might not be ready. Not after everything that has happened in the past twenty-four hours. So, I'll give her space, allow her to come to me, wait until her desire for me is so overwhelming, that she climbs right into my bed. That will show her that I love her, right?

Don't worry, little omega. I'm coming home to you.
