Chapter Seventy-three Evan Sterling's POV (Present Time)
The entire room went very quiet and then my mother dropped a kiss on Mary Antoinette's forehead and said, "We will wait outside, darling, and join you as soon as the doctor calls us back in, okay?”
"Okay," Mary Antoinette replied.
My mum left her side, walked up to Antony Dallas and said, "Come now, it would just be for a few minutes. We came a long way for this. Let's give the doctors the space they need."
Reaching for Anastasia's hand she pulled the other woman and ushered her towards the door, Antony followed, albeit reluctantly. I was about to follow when Mary Antoinette said, "Can my husband stay, please?"
"We will call everyone back inside in a few minutes. We just need to speak with you alone--" the doctor said. I flashed Mary Antoinette a smile, ignored the fucker and walked outside. A nurse came to usher us to a private waiting room just across Mary Antoinette's room and something told me this was done on purpose.
About fifteen minutes later, a nurse came to call us back and my mother came to stand beside me, waiting for everyone to leave, then she turned to me and said, "You saw her?!"
"She is the doctor in charge of Mary Antoinette's case, it's written on her chart," I said, my mother, gasped.
"D - do you think she might refuse—you know when she finds out…"
"I suppose we will find out once we join the others," I replied. If it was before I found out she had connived with Edward, I would have told her what I just found out about Estera and my kids. But there was no way in hell that I could trust her with such a piece of delicate information again. The last thing I needed was getting fucked before I find a solution to my problem. I shepherded her back inside Mary Antoinette's room, and immediately after I walked in, I felt Estera in there. I placed a hand on my mother's back, reminding her to act like she didn't know her. I saw their eyes meet, Estera gave my mother a discreet nod then looked away. I felt my mother quiver beside me.
"Thank you for your cooperation--" Dr. Foster said but was interrupted by Antony Dallas.
"We were hardly given any other choice, doctor, if this is a common occurrence here I wonder if you get cases from high-profile individuals. Someone should speak to the hospital director or something--"
I saw the doctor bristle and he looked directly at Antony, the corner of his lips tweaked and he replied, "If you have any complaints, you can fill a form and drop it right in the box in front of my office on your way out, I'm sure I will create time to give it a look."
'Ah, damn it! In another world, I swear I would have loved to be this guy's friend. He is one hell of a savage and I loved it!' I thought.
Anthony blanched and I tried so hard not to laugh.
"If there are no more objections I will let Dr. Roberts explain the procedure to you all… Dr.?" Foster said, and I sure didn't miss the tender way he said her name. I clenched my jaw. Looking from Estera to Foster. Then I noticed Estera looked a bit pale and I wished I had the psyche ability to communicate with her and let her know she was safe. Nothing was going to happen to her with me in the room.
She cleared her throat, focused her attention on Mary Antoinette and said, "I'm sorry Mary Antoinette, both of your Ovaries will have to be evacuated. And because it would be a health hazard to leave the space empty, we have to make sure we replace at least one. Now, that can be managed with the level of expertise in this room, but just like your doctor has told you, your cancer has spread to a few of the surrounding organs. It has affected your kidney and liver, hence why your doctors refused to bother with chemo, cos that would be giving you false hope and a complete waste of time. Operating on you means we would have to do an ovary, liver and kidney transplant then set you up for chemo… it is high risk… it is like giving you all brand new organs—”
"But it can be done?"
"Yes, I just need you to understand that this is going to be tasking on your body and family. And your chances of survival are grim –- a 10% chance if I might add. And of course, let's not forget the chances of you getting donors for a complete transplant are very slim. Nevertheless, we have inputted your name in the waiting list… but—"
“You don’t need to worry about donors, you can test her mother and me for any organs you need and if we don’t match, we will make sure she gets what she needs—”
“You started well then ruined it with your last statement, Mr. Dallas. I do not work well with people who manipulate the system, there are people on that list that had been waiting for years to get the organs they need…” Foster went off in a low angry tone that made even Antony shift uncomfortably on his feet, then he waved him off dismissively.
"Dr. Roberts?” Mary Antoinette called in a gentle tone, causing everyone to turn their attention to her. She gave Estera a tired smile and added, “I have read about your work I know you can do this, that is why we are here. I have two options: it is either I wait to die or try and buy time. I'm choosing to buy time. My life has been really--"
"I don't think the doctors need to hear anything other than your medical history, baby, let them do their job and fast," Antony interrupted, and both Foster and Estera scowled at him.
"Yes, daddy," Mary Antoinette said in resignation and there was a hint of sadness in her voice. I could never understand how she just let him constantly overrode her life that way, like some obedient cyborg.
When Foster said, "We have a few authorization documents that you have to sign, Mr. Dallas." Something told me he knew that I have no such authority over Mary Antoinette.
"My husband could--" Mary Antoinette started to say but was interrupted by Foster.
"Since Mr. Dallas is your father and he claimed to be the one responsible for the hospital payment, I think it's best he signs with your mother."
After saying that he looked pointedly at me and I knew with no doubt whatsoever that he knew.
