Chapter 10
"Doctor Taylor, Doctor Taylor?"
Daniel called me several times before I snapped out of my daze.
"Huh?"
He frowned, "What's wrong with you? Did you not sleep well last night?"
I continued transcribing the data, pretending to be relaxed as I shrugged, "No, my sleep has always been good."
Little did he know that I had dark circles under my eyes.
Daniel didn't say anything else and quietly lay there.
After much consideration, I asked,
"Daniel, do you want to go out? Tonight."
The floor where Daniel resided was a "restricted zone" in our hospital.
Only with a special access card could one enter or exit.
It had been a long time since he had seen the outside world.
Daniel raised his eyebrows in surprise, "Where to?"
"A barbershop."
...
The streets were empty in the late night, with few vehicles passing by.
Daniel was wearing a long coat that I had brought for him.
He had a cap and mask on, covering most of his face, with only his deep eyes exposed.
I nudged his arm with my elbow, "Hey, how do you feel about the changes outside?"
"I'm not surprised at all," Daniel said nonchalantly.
These past two years, this area has become a focal point of the city's construction plans.
Tall buildings have sprung up, a far cry from the desolate scene three years ago.
In theory, Daniel should have at least taken a look around.
But he continued to walk straight ahead, as if commuting on this road every day.
"Why are you surprised? I've known what it would become for a long time," I exclaimed in shock.
"You knew? Did you sneak out?" Daniel glanced at me, as if I were a fool.
"I heard you," he replied.
I wondered when I had said anything...
Wait a minute, I suddenly realized something and abruptly stopped in my tracks.
I did say something...
But that was before Daniel woke up!
