Chapter 21
Once again, it was just the two of us in the hospital room.
I took a wet cotton swab and moistened Daniel's chapped lips.
His gaze remained glued to my face, making me feel uneasy all over.
I couldn't help but ask, "Why do you keep staring at me?"
"I want to look at you."
Who could resist that?
My cheeks suddenly flushed, and I stayed silent.
He spoke like a child, "Isabel, I'm hungry."
I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness.
Just when he made a request, I couldn't fulfill it. "You can't eat yet, your stomach can't handle it."
Disappointment was evident in his eyes, "Alright."
After a while, he spoke again,
"Could you pour me a glass of water to relieve my hunger?"
I paused my hand that was writing the medical record, my head buzzing.
"...Are you sure?"
"What's there to be unsure about?"
Alright...
My teacher once said that as a doctor, you can encounter all sorts of things, and it's true.
I poured a glass of water from the water dispenser.
As I reached for the corner of his blanket, Daniel stopped me and pulled on the wound, causing sweat to bead on his forehead from the pain.
"What are you doing?"
I was puzzled, "Didn't you say..."
Daniel realized my embarrassment; his face turned slightly green as he reached for the glass of water in my hand and took a few sips.
Then he gave me a meaningful look.
"To relieve hunger, got it?"
Me: ...Damn!
