Chapter 43: Spare Your Life
Li Wei wouldn't have an ounce of mercy for Wells, who acted so ruthlessly.
Wells, who was punched by Li Wei and now struggling with blood all over his face, tried to stand up from the ground. His swollen eyes had become much clearer, at least without the initial reddish glare.
He looked towards Li Wei, mouth slightly open as if about to say something.
Li Wei had no intention of listening. He walked up to Wells, and with a kick, aimed at the guy's head.
Wells barely raised his hand to block Li Wei's foot but was kicked down to the ground again.
"Dare to block?" Li Wei chuckled, taking another step forward and delivering another kick to Wells' face.
This time, Wells couldn't block it.
"Let you block, let you block, let you block!" Li Wei continued to stomp down, one foot after another.
Wells' head was tough, but if it were an ordinary person, their head might have been crushed by now.
"Hmm? Passed out?" Li Wei muttered, nudging the guy's head with his foot, noticing there was no response.
Actually, it seemed about right.
First, he took a swift strike from Li Wei, then was hit several times by Cai Yutong's explosive bullets, followed by Li Wei's demonic claw grabbing his head, and then, in an unguarded state, a direct punch from Li Wei's demonic left hand straight to his head. After that, he also received a relay from Cai Yutong's energy cannon in mid-air.
Under these successive heavy blows, all critical, it was normal to faint. Even if he died, it wouldn't be surprising.
Feeling bored, Li Wei pulled out a pistol from his waist, loaded it with bullets, and aimed it at Wells' head.
"Wait a moment, Mr. Li Wei!" Cai Yutong's voice came from behind.
Li Wei turned his head, looking at Cai Yutong. "This guy almost took your life just now. Do you still want him alive? Killing him, even if it's known by the Guild, won't be pinned on us. He was the one who started the fight over the prey."
Cai Yutong took a deep breath and said, "Although that's indeed the case, I still hope Mr. Li Wei can spare Wells' life. Consider it a favor for me!"
"I want to know something."
Cai Yutong said, "Wells wasn't like this before. It's hard to explain in a few words, although he's now rebellious and impulsive, his true nature isn't irredeemable."
Li Wei silently looked at Cai Yutong, his hand unmoving, the gun still aimed at Wells' head.
Obviously, the girl's explanation didn't satisfy Li Wei.
Cai Yutong took a deep breath and continued, "His father, his grandfather, Senior Marlon, and Senior Ramos, are all heroic hunters from the Clover Branch. Their Agrell family has been working for generations in the Clover Branch."
"Especially his father, Marlon Agrell, who has dealt with many crises and was once the strongest demon hunter in the Clover Branch. But five years ago, his father Marlon defected. Since then, Wells' temperament changed drastically, and his grandfather Ramos couldn't control him, leading to his current state."
"But, no matter what, his family has made great sacrifices for the Guild. Moreover, he is a member of the Clover Branch, a comrade I acknowledge. I can't watch you kill him."
Looking into the determined eyes of the girl, Li Wei shook his head, lowered his hand, and put the gun back into his waist holster, then walked over to the mushroom person's side.
"Mr. Li Wei..." Cai Yutong called softly.
Li Wei waved his hand behind him and said, "For your sake, I'll spare his life. However, how to deal with him, along with those two knocked down by the mushroom's spores, you figure it out yourself. Don't expect me to save him."
"Thank you." A smile appeared on Cai Yutong's face.
"Humph, naive girl. Consider this blood core as the reward for sparing that kid's life. I won't split it with you," Li Wei said.
"Sure, Mr. Li Wei, take it all," Cai Yutong said with a smile.
...
Li Wei took a police car back to the Clover Branch headquarters ahead of time.
The police station in the upper district was much more reliable than the one in the lower district. When Li Wei left Cai Yutong and Wells' group behind and left on his own, the police from Merlin Avenue were already outside the park.
He didn't face any difficulties. Although the relationship between hunters and the police, even the city garrison, wasn't particularly friendly, and there were even some conflicts in certain areas, the mushroom person escape case was something the police couldn't handle and was handed over to the Hunter Guild.
In this matter, Li Wei had indeed helped these police officers out, so receiving courteous treatment was quite normal.
Back at the Guild, Cai Yutong and the others hadn't returned yet.
Li Wei didn't care. Holding the two eyes of the mushroom person, he went to the Hunter Zone in the Guild's main hall and queued up to submit the task.
The process remained the same, let's leave it aside for now. An hour later, when Li Wei received the mission reward and was about to leave, he happened to see Cai Yutong return.
"Mr. Li Wei," Cai Yutong called out to him.
"Hmm?" Li Wei responded.
"Um... Wells, Alu, and Cuihe were just taken to the hospital," Cai Yutong said.
"Hmm."
"Cuihe..." Cai Yutong's expression carried a hint of sadness, "Cuihe might not make it..."
Li Wei furrowed his brow, recalling who Cuihe was: the guy he initially found, shot, then was heavily suppressed in the one-on-one fight with the mushroom person, and ultimately knocked down by the spore outbreak along with the chubby Alu.
The death of a stranger, or even an enemy, wouldn't cause too much disturbance in his heart; he just felt a bit sentimental.
Cuihe's death had a bit to do with him since if he hadn't shot Cuihe with the piercing bullet at the beginning, Cuihe probably wouldn't have died even if he suffered from the spore outbreak. But if we're being honest, Li Wei wasn't the main culprit behind his death.
These guys followed him and Cai Yutong, lurking and snatching after Li Wei and Cai Yutong found the prey. This was already a shady business.
Let's put that aside for now. As companions, if Wells had initially gone to provide support, the mushroom person might not have had the chance to release the spores. Even if the mushroom person did release them, as long as Wells had some common sense and prioritized aiding his companions instead of continuing to attack Li Wei and Cai Yutong, Cuihe probably wouldn't have ended up like this.
"You can only blame Cuihe for misjudging people. Dealing with a friend like Wells, hmph..."
"After Wells learned about this," Cai Yutong said with a mournful expression, "I can tell he's finding it hard to cope. He even refuses hospital treatment and stays by Cuihe's bedside."
"Heh." Li Wei chuckled coldly. "What was he doing earlier?"
