Chapter 98: The Seven Spirit Monks
Li Wei and the others became alert immediately.
"What's happening?"
"I don't know..."
"It shouldn't have any impact on us, right?"
Li Wei said, "Let me take a look."
With that, he found a tree and climbed up swiftly.
Lying on a thick branch, Li Wei activated his Sharingan and looked towards the area shrouded in smoke.
"...I see four monks... One is wielding a stick, one is wielding a sword, and two are empty-handed..."
"Huh? Monks?" Bander didn't understand his terminology at first but quickly caught on. "You mean martial monks?"
"Yes, martial monks," Li Wei corrected his wording.
"They should be the monks from the Hanging Monastery."
"Huh?" Li Wei felt strange. The Hanging Monastery? What was that?
"The Hanging Monastery is a well-known sect for cultivation. They claim to believe in 'Buddha' and are said to be a faith tradition passed down before a great catastrophe. All Evolvers who want to join their sect, practice their training methods, and learn the various skills they inherit, must shave their heads." Cai Yutong explained roughly to Li Wei on the side.
Li Wei understood the basics. He then asked, "So, why are these monks here?"
"Many cultivation sects have good relations with our Hunter's Guild," Bander said. "Many sects are willing to have their disciples join the Hunter's Guild, seeking real combat to hone themselves and also to earn some benefits. The Guild also hopes to have these sect members join, after all, the strength of these cultivation sects is generally not bad."
"I see..."
"Yeah," Bander continued, "I heard that the guild leader invited monks from the Hanging Monastery to participate in this regional hunt. They sent a famous group called the 'Seven Spirit Monks' to the Clover Community. These seven monks all participated in the training at the guild headquarters three years ago and all eventually broke through to the first development level. Among them, the most powerful one called 'Lingmu,' even reached the third development level when he graduated."
"Seven Spirit Monks..." Li Wei continued to watch the battle in Manneting Central Square with his Sharingan, murmuring, "There should be seven of them, right? But I only see four... And they look beaten up. I feel like the most powerful one among them, the empty-handed guy, is fighting a monster that is at least four meters tall. It's very strange; the monster is completely black, with eyes emitting red light, three horns on its head, flames burning behind it, walking on its two feet, and using its claws to fight. But it definitely hasn't been mechanically modified; I can't see any signs of modification on it."
"The other three monks are fighting a group of people in black robes. Those people in black robes don't look like they've been through mechanical modification either. They release some kind of dark purple energy with their gestures, which feels quite eerie."
The more Li Wei spoke, the more puzzled the people under the tree became.
That monstrous creature, even Bander, who had the most adventurous experience among them, was suddenly unable to determine what it was from Li Wei's description.
Most importantly, those opponents, whether the men in black robes or the giant demon, had not undergone any mechanical modification. This was very strange. Throughout the riots in Clover Community and Merlin Avenue, there had never been any corresponding intelligence mentioning encountering enemies other than semi-mechanical monsters.
The more Bander listened to Li Wei, the more anxious he became. He quickly climbed up the tree branch to look at the battlefield. However, unfortunately, although his vision was also good, it was definitely not as good as Li Wei's Sharingan.
"That monster... that monster..." Bander squinted and looked carefully. "Why do I feel like it's..."
"A demon," Li Wei gave an answer.
"Yes! A demon!" Bander exclaimed, "Could it be the Dark Cult? Or the Purgatory Tower?"
The two names Bander shouted out were the most notorious evil organizations in the New Era. Of course, evil organizations were not limited to these two, but these two were the most famous for using demons.
At this point, Bander's gaze inadvertently glanced at Li Wei's left hand hidden under his sleeve, but quickly shifted back—there was a fundamental difference between supernatural abilities and those evil organizations that had been corrupted by devilish thoughts. Perhaps the Holy Grace Church would consider it evil, but the hunters wouldn't. Not to mention, the president of the Iron Cross Avenue branch, a man with the title "Lord of Flames," was a powerful hunter who mastered the demonic flame ability.
Withdrawing his thoughts, Bander carefully looked at the battlefield, hoping to discern who the black-robed people and the giant demon were.
Unfortunately, the distance was too far, and he couldn't see clearly. However, there was Li Wei beside him to ask for help.
"Li Wei, take a closer look and see if there are any special markings on the demon and those men in black robes."
"I'll take a look..." Li Wei looked as instructed. Although the Sharingan had reconnaissance capabilities, the distance was too far, and the fighting between the monks and the men in black robes was extremely fierce, obviously a high-level battle, which greatly affected Li Wei's observation.
Before he could identify the specific situation, there was a sudden change in the field. The monk who had fought the giant demon suddenly became golden all over, using an unknown technique to give the demon a heavy blow, forcing it back. However, then, a black light shot from the third floor of the building in front of them enveloped him. The golden light around him quickly dissipated, and he was melted into a pool of juice.
Li Wei was shocked. If nothing unexpected happened, the monk who had just been killed should be the "Lingmu" that Bander mentioned. He was a master who had reached the third development level three years ago. He should be even stronger now, right? Killed just like that?
"The 'Seven Spirit Monks' you mentioned, the strongest one among them... seems to be dead."
"I saw it too..." Bander said heavily, "It should be Lingmu. I know him, we trained together at headquarters three years ago. He was a prominent figure. I thought he would definitely become a pillar of the Hanging Monastery, but I didn't expect him to die here... Li Wei, focus and quickly see what the opponents really are. This battle is definitely something we can't interfere with."
"Yeah." Li Wei responded, concentrating on observing.
