Look In Her Eyes

As I walked through the corridor, I could sense the cheerful atmosphere permeating the school. The faces of students radiated joy, like fresh roses basking in the sunlight. Everywhere I looked, students were happily sharing their excitement with one another.

"Joe, what's your plan, buddy?" one student asked his friend.

"All in for the fun, bro," Joe replied with a grin.

From their animated conversation, I could tell that something big had been announced by the school authorities. Observing the jubilance, excitement, and contentment on their faces, I made my way to my class.

Inside the classroom, a similar scene unfolded. I arrived a few minutes early, finding no one seated in their chairs but instead, students were energetically jumping on them. It was evident that whatever was happening, it was significant.

Two girls standing by the dias were engaged in conversation about choosing their partners.

"Who would you choose?" one of them asked.

"Well, I'm also wondering who will suit me best," the other girl replied, echoing my thoughts.

As I settled into my seat, a guy approached me with an air of excitement.

"Hey, Arthur! Who will you be going with, man?" he asked cheerfully.

I raised an eyebrow, confused. "For what and where?"

"C'mon, man, haven't you heard about the farewell thing happening next week?" he exclaimed. "The whole college is gossiping about it and making plans. Choosing partners, etc."

"Yeah, I've heard some things," I admitted.

"Then choose your mate before someone takes her away. By the way, do you have someone?" he teased, raising his eyebrows suggestively.

"No, no," I shook my head.

"Should I look for someone for you?" he suggested playfully.

"Thanks, but I'll look around myself," I politely declined.

"Well, Tina is still available. No one is ready to be her partner," he suggested anyway.

"I see. Let's hope she finds one before the event," I said, offering a hopeful smile.

Just as the professor entered the room, everyone settled into their seats, and discipline was maintained in his honor as he began delivering his lecture.

A farewell party... Choosing partners, dance, and prop night.

I glanced around the room, pondering which girl would be suitable to be my partner. Tina was mentioned, but I hadn't interacted with her at all. I wasn't keen on spending the night with someone I barely knew.

In truth, I hadn't formed any close friendships with any girls in my class. While I had spoken with some briefly, there hadn't been any deep connections or familiarity. "Will I end up alone on the prop night?" I wondered, feeling uncertain about my prospects.

Considering my current circumstances, I couldn't bring myself to partner with any girl from my class. They felt like strangers to me.

"Perhaps I'd rather take the day off and enjoy it at home," I thought, contemplating my options.

I muddled to myself as the professor just finished with his lecture and inquired the class about whether they had choose their partners or not.

One by one students began telling the name of their partner and expressed their happiness.

"What about you Arthur?" The professor pointed at me.

"Me?" I repeated as if didn't hear him.

"Yeah, you. Who will be you coming with?" He reiterated his question.

"I haven't decided it yet." I said a little ashamed of my incapabilities of not being able to choose to girl who would be my partner at the farewell night.

"You don't have much time. Hurry up. I hope you won't like to spend the night alone." He said mockingly.

"Yeah sure." I said.

It was a hard decision. Though somewhere in my head I knew with whom I wanted to spend the night.

I exited my room after the professor and walked two room down. The seniors were also busy in the preps of farewell party and choosing their partner. I wasn't sure whether she had chosen her partner or not.

Maybe she wanted to be with someone else. Maybe she liked someone from her class. Maybe some guy has asked her before I could.

"Should I ask her or not?"

"What if she got angry?"

Would she like to be partnered with her junior?

Well, obviously she wouldn't.

I was all questions when she walked out of her glass accompanied by her friends.

"Arthur, is that you?

She pointed me out of the pool of students rushing out of her classroom.

"Yeah, hey.

Hi everyone."

I greeted her and her friends and shook hands with them.

"Have you chosen some girls or not?" She asked me straight away.

"Well, not yet." I said slowly.

"Oh, should I help you with it?" She offered her help. While her friends were looking at me. I felt little sheepish in front of them and I guess she had figured that already.

"Girls I'll catch up with you later." She told them as we motioned me to follow her.

We both walked out of the corridor and reached the stair descending down.

"Thanks!" I whispered at her back.

"For what?" She inquired without turning around.

"I was actually feeling uneasy in front of them." I said shyly.

"Ah, that's fine. It happens." She dismissed it casually.

We climbed down some stairs and sat on one of them.

"Tell me!"

What?

"Is there any girl you want to ask to and feeling hesitant?" She asked.

I took a pause for some minutes while she watched my face waiting for me to say something.

"Umm.. well.. yess... There's a girl." I said taking small pauses in between and emphasizing each word.

"Yeah, that's what I'm asking. Who is she? Tell me. I'll ask her on your behalf."

I watched her fave admiringly as she talk, her face so much concerned about me. Though, I wasn't clear about with whom I want to be partnered but one thing was damn sure. It would only be her and no one else.

"You know her." I spoke lightly.

I know her? She beseeched her lips and narrowed her gaze as if trying to recall all the girls she knew who could probably know me as well. Or I could have interest in.

"Don't waste our time. Tell me straightforwardly." I spoke effingly.

"Look in my eyes. You'll see her." I said as my lips curled up in a smile I couldn't control.

Initially, she couldn't get it and leaned forward to look in my eyes deeply. I could feel her gaze burdening mine.

"Did you see her?" I asked her.

"Well, there's--- just--- me." She said taking long pauses.

Then she immediately pulled herself back and looked at my face, not into my looking for anyone but looking at me to see me.

I smiled though her expressions were little shocked and amazed.

She didn't say a word. We kept on staring at each other for a while before she stood up walked away from there.

I didn't try to stop her because I knew what her answer will be. I had already seen that in her eyes.

Though, a part of me still wanted to hear it coming from her mouth.
