36. Dead Body

Brice's POV

I looked at Jill who's handing me the zip tie, she was putting on her scared face but the movement of her hands was calm when she was showing me her gun hidden under her blouse.

Jill put on a show as a terrified fiancée and I kept on asking him questions which he laughed and then points the gun at me and told me to shut the fuck up.

We have been in the car for over an hour and the man wasn't shy about showing us where he was going and his face. Those two facts made me realize that he was really going to kill us both unless Jill kill him first.

I could see Jill was sizing him up as she repeatedly looked at him. But I didn't expect her to let out the most embarrassing cry making the man look annoyed enough that he told me to shut her up. That was when I hugged her, while my ears perked up when she whispered in between her fake sobs.

Damn, she's good at this.

"I'm going to lean on you once he lets us out then make a move when he least expected. You need to lay on the ground and move away, find a hiding space until I call you out. We've discussed this." She paused to let out another fake sob. "You're going to be okay. We got this." She whispered again and I replied to her with a simple yes while awkwardly hugging her, trying not to give out our conversation to the man with the gun sitting behind the wheel, in front of us.

Minutes later we arrived at an abandoned warehousing complex, he parked the car and told us to get out. But before I even get out Jill pretend to trip and out of nowhere pulled a knife and stabbed the guy to his gut. He didn't see it coming and he slumped to his back his head hit the cement hard. The stalker barely had time to point his gun at Jill, I know should've lain low but my body went still.

Her loud voice was what took me back to the present and I did as she instructed me before. Then before long, two sleek black SUVs were closing in to our vicinity. I was frantically looking for a way to defend myself when I heard the gunshot, and that's when I saw the stalker, lay still on the ground with a gunshot wound on his temple.

"Mr. Durant, you're safe. The two vehicles are our team, they've been monitoring our movement. Unfortunately, the man struggled and I have to eliminate the threat..."

The man is dead, my stalker is dead.
Finally...

She was moving her lips, but I couldn't hear her words as my heart beats slow down and I felt the burden lifted and a feeling of relief rushing throughout my body.

"Fuck! dude, that was truly intense." Percy get out from one of the cars while his men were to the dead body, checking his pulse, taking pictures and some were talking to Jill, circling her while she took out her earpiece and holster back her gun behind her back.

"Come on, we should leave the scene, they will take care of this with the authorities. This is why they're so freaking expensive." Percy wrapped my shoulder with his arm and ushered me to one of the SUVs then told the driver to take us back to the city, he gave him his building address and I didn't ask questions.

I was still trying to wrap my head around the last event.

"You didn't tell me that the car was being tracked?" I finally asked feeling a bit annoyed that they didn't rescue us sooner. We reached their two-floor penthouse apartment, Ella was right, her brothers were filthy rich.

"Sorry, that's on Grady. The man wanted you to look convincing and we set up so many scenarios that we can't fill you in on every one of them." He led me to their very posh bar and asked what's my poison.

"Any whiskey, rum, or vodka, the strongest one you have, I'm not picky."

Percy laughed and told me to sit. "We're going to drink then call Grady. I already text him, he's still catching up with the guys next door, but he'll call once he can unlatch himself from Ella.

I raised my brow while taking a seat on the stool in front of him. I needed a pick me up. A strong drink to jump me back to reality, somehow I feel detached from the current situation.

"Guys next door?"

"Yeah, guys we've known for years, ranch workers, more like neighbors we grew up with..."

"And Ella is there with these guys?" I know I sounded a bit jealous, well...more like obsessively possessive and that made Percy laugh.

"Sit and calm your ass down, those guys are like brothers to her. She's crazy in love with you, though I told her not to." He shrugged with a slight playfulness in his eyes which I don't appreciate.

"Right, so now that the guy's dead she should go back to the city. I'll come to pick her up tomorrow morning."

Percy laughed while pouring the amber color liquid into the glass in front of me. "Dude, you're too eager aren't you? Mom and dad miss her too, you know? give her a couple of days. Sort your shit here. We still need to talk this through, honestly, I think this is too easy."

"Huh? why the fuck is that?" I was agitated in seconds.

"I don't know, but I think it's best to wait out for a couple of days before bringing Ella back here. We need Grady, but I want people investigating your dead guy. Why he did it, he's background, you know... the standard stuff," he said easily while finishing off on his glass then pouring himself another one.

I didn't think about that and the thought of a man was trying to kill my fiancée did sound a bit psychotic, strange, and somehow Percy was right, the why was now irking on the back of my head.

The fuck.

"See? now you're thinking what I'm thinking, right?" he chuckled and sipped his drink.

"Damn you, Percy." I cursed and grabbed the bottle from his side then pour myself another glass.

I couldn't process the thought, the man is dead, the problem should be solved not being dug up. But I know, deep down I know, Percy was voicing out what's on his mind. And writing mainly thriller books, I know there's a loose end somewhere in the plot, the twist of the story.

Damn him.

"I'm just saying, most of your fans are women, so unless he's gay for you I'm thinking he's the errand boy." The man shrugged as he made a freaking point, clear as day and I groaned and drink more trying to slow down the beat of my heart while the slow burn of the liquid warmed my insides.

"So, call your guys and tell them to search his place,"

"Already did," he smugly said, showing me the text he sent just now to my bodyguard, Jill.

God, when is this thing going to be over?
