Chapter 93_ Investigation And Breakfast!

The next day, Arya woke up early in the morning and freshened up with the sole purpose of paying Melinda Cocatti a visit. Sitting on the bed, she thought to herself, ‘I have to warn Marco that I won't be at the office today.’ She took her phone from under the pillow and called him; it rang and rang. Finally, he picked it up, but Arya couldn't hear anything.

“Hello? Marco?" She said,

"Yes.” Marco answered grumpily.

"I just wanted to say that I can't be at the office today.” Arya said, and Marco nodded even though he knew Arya couldn't see him.

“Good." He said,

‘Woah. That's some pretty steep hostility right there.’ Arya mused and asked, “Marco, are you alright?”

"I'm great. And the farther away you stay, the better I’ll feel.” Marco said, and he closed the call like he was slamming a door on her face.

“What the fuck?" Arya muttered, blinking at her phone, and Kane, who had just come out of the bathroom, cocked his eyebrow at her.

“Let me guess. Marco was acting like a soulless bitch that just had a glass full of sour milk.” Kane said as he walked to the drawers to pick an outfit.

“Yes! But I don't understand why.” Arya answered, and Kane sighed.

“When he’s upset, he sees everything in black and white. You are too close to me, so you're an enemy now.” Kane explained, making Arya roll her eyes.

"We don't need another problem, but we’ll fix this as well.” Arya said, with a determined voice.

“My Tigress. You're a goddamn warrior.” Kane said,

“You're goddamn right." Arya said with a wink and continued, “For now, I want to hear what Melinda Cocatti has to say; she has a small pizzeria not that far away.”

“Investigations and breakfast; I like that.” Kane said, and Arya chuckled, nodding her head in agreement with him.

======

Arya and Kane arrived at Melinda’s pizzeria for lunch, and for a moment, Arya was thrown off her mission by how delicious the food was as the aroma infiltrated her nostrils. They went inside and took a seat as a server came and served them their orders.

“I’ve never had a pizza like this before.” Kane said, after taking a bite of the pizza.

"It's good, but I think we should focus on the true reason we're here.” Arya said, and as she conveyed that to Kane, Melinda came to their table to check how everything was going.

“E come andiamo qui? Are you enjoying my pizza?” She asked, Melinda seems to take a lot of pride in her work. Arya noticed that as she gave her a detached and confident smile and silently mused, ‘It's game on, Melinda. I need your secrets, and I’ll get them all.’

Arya noticed that Melinda looked unable to take her eyes away from Kane, and she smirked, as she thought that she could use it to her advantage. She signaled for Kane to speak.

“La pízza é deliziosa, signora. A true work of art.” Kane complimented, and Melinda beamed a smile at him.

“You are making me very happy. I love to bring joy to people with my food.” Melinda said, and Arya gave Kane a meaningful look as she mouthed to him, ‘Come on, ask her.’

"Sì…. Grazie mille davvero. But we were wondering if we could speak to you for a minute.” Kane said politely, and Melinda nodded at him.

"Of course, ask me anything."

“It's about Maranello's Enterprise, your old work. We —--” Before Kane could complete his sentence, the friendliness on Melinda's face disappeared as she frowned and glared daggers at Kane.

“I don't have anything to say about Maranello Enterprise. Go away!” Melinda said as she became hostile toward them.

“Get the hell out of here." She continued.

Arya, who had been silent, met Melinda's angry eyes with calm determination.

“Melinda, we are not here to cause problems. We are just looking for answers.” Arya said, and she could tell that Melinda wanted to yell and make a scene, but Arya's unshakable confidence fixed her to the spot. Even Kane looked incredibly impressed by her calm detachment.

“Just give us a few minutes without making a fuss, and we’ll be gone before you can say, ‘Pizza Margherita.” Arya continued, and Melinda found herself nodding to Arya, as if compelled by her words.

"Oh. Okay." Melinda muttered, and she sat at the table with them, huffing in annoyance.
“I didn't mean to sound hostile, but I was treated so unfairly that just thinking about it makes me mad.” Melinda explained.

Arya and Kane looked at each other, quite surprised by her words.

Arya mused silently, ‘I wasn't expecting that kind of reaction. It didn't feel fake at all. There's a chance that the mole framed her in Naples and then moved to our office.’ Arya looked at Kane again, and by the look on his face, she could tell he was thinking the same thing as hers.

“We just would like to know what happened, Melinda, and solve this matter once and for all.” Arya said,

"If we get to the truth, you could even return to the company and get promoted.” Kane chimed in, but Melinda shook her head.

“I don't care about returning; I don't want to work for someone else. I love this place, and I'm happy with the life I have now. Life moves forward, not backward. It's not even worth digging into the past.” Melinda said, making Arya and Kane exchange eye contact with one another.
