Chapter 47 Forgiving His Arrogance And Rudeness
Yvonne disappointedly said, "Oh."
At this moment, as long as Elijah said something conciliatory, she would definitely let bygones be bygones.
But he didn't.
"I have a lot of water cups. I don't mind losing one. Would you discard it for me?" Yvonne walked into the elevator lobby.
Elijah looked deeply at her until the elevator doors closed.
He stood still, feeling his legs go weak before returning to the car.
Looking at Yvonne's pale pink water cup, he noticed the dent on the base and a few spots where the paint had chipped off.
This cup must have been around for some time, no wonder she didn't want it anymore.
Even though it was just a cup she didn't want, Elijah felt like Yvonne was talking about him.
Small snowflakes began to fall from the sky.
He had never been so lost, not knowing where to go.
He didn't plan on going back to Rhode Hills for now, as it would be lonely there after returning.
He reclined the seat and closed his eyes, but the phone rang.
It was from the person he disliked but couldn't avoid.
He answered the call on speakerphone.
"Elijah, I'm planning to go abroad for a while. I'll be back after the New Year. Starting from tomorrow, go to the company." Charles took on a particularly humble posture.
"I'm busy with the law firm, I don't have time." Elijah immediately refused.
Charles sighed deeply, "You must help me this time. I have no other choice but to go abroad."
"What kind of trouble did you get into again?" Elijah asked disdainfully.
Charles's voice lowered, "I have attracted the attention of a troublesome woman. I will hide for two months and then come back."
"Unless you explain clearly, I can't help you with it." Elijah was annoyed.
Over the years, Charles had grown older, but such incidents kept happening.
Elijah had advised him more than once, but it seemed to be in vain, so he turned a blind eye.
"A few years ago, I had a fling with an actress. Now, she has come back and found me, with a child in tow, claiming the child is mine." Charles's voice was filled with helplessness.
"Did you do a paternity test?" Elijah asked.
"I did." Charles's defeated tone already gave away the answer to Elijah.
Elijah's body trembled slightly as he clenched his jaw. "Avoiding it won't solve anything. How do you plan to handle this?"
"I'll go abroad for a while, let them mother and daughter calm down, and then pay them off," Charles said nonchalantly.
He was quite skilled in dealing with such matters when he was younger.
Elijah fell into silence.
"Elijah, I promise you, I will keep myself clean from now on. I’ll never make such mistakes again." Charles was afraid that Elijah would not agree, so he made consecutive promises. "When I come back from abroad, I'll immediately give you ten percent of the company's shares."
"I don't want it," Elijah replied coldly.
"Carter doesn't have the talent for business, so all of my wealth and assets will be left to you. Manage it for now, and it will be easier for you in the future," Charles advised earnestly.
"You originally had a 20% ownership, and grandmother gave you 30% of her shares. You are the largest shareholder of the Harper Group. All matters of the company should be handled by you. I'm already sixty years old and still not retired. Can’t you even help me?"
"Even without ownership in the Harper Group, I can live a good life." Elijah forcefully distanced himself. "You should know, I don't want to get involved in the business world."
"I have a flight tomorrow morning. You go to the company." Charles didn't leave any room for Elijah to think and hung up the phone directly.
Elijah's head was throbbing.
Whenever he heard Charles's troublesome matters, he had the urge to curse.
But he quickly realized that apart from listening and feeling powerless, there was nothing else he could do.
The snowfall became heavier, covering the ground with a layer of white.
He started the car and slowly drove out of Sunshine Community.
The next day was Monday, and it was also Yvonne's first day in the logistics department.
The colleagues in the drafting team looked regretful, and Owen comforted her, “Yvonne, you should do your best, as gold shines wherever it is.”
Yvonne arrived at the first-floor logistics department carrying a storage box.
Most of the staff in the logistics department were older in age and had lower education levels, completely different from the design department.
It was called the logistics department, but in reality, it was just a janitorial department.
Ten people gathered in a small office of about twenty square meters, with only a few desks and computers discarded by the marketing and design departments. There weren't even designated workstations.
The supervisor of the logistics department was named Victoria, a plump middle-aged woman who was straightforward and outspoken. She said Yvonne was the first employee to transfer from the design department to the logistics department since the establishment of FA Center Company.
Several colleagues echoed, saying "what a pity." Yvonne didn't hear pity in their words, only schadenfreude.
Yvonne secretly vowed that she would soon return to the design department looking glamorous and bright.
The work in the logistics department was quite trivial. Yvonne had just settled things in when she received a notification to go to the finance department to deliver printing supplies.
She was accompanied by a male colleague named Paul. Paul was in his thirties, tall and skinny, with a pair of mischievous eyes.
In order to please Yvonne, he took on all the physical work, only allowing Yvonne to count the quantity of supplies and take the list to the finance department supervisor for signature.
They knocked on the door of the finance department, and a hoarse female voice came from inside, "Come in."
Yvonne instantly froze.
She remembered very clearly that this voice had once assured Abigail on the phone, saying she would get her out of the FA Center Company. When she chased after her, she had only seen a slender figure in the stairwell.
Yvonne composed herself and pushed open the door. "I'm Yvonne from the logistics department, and I have a list that needs your signature."
Maria looked up from a pile of documents and glanced at Yvonne for a moment, sneering, “Have you counted the types and quantities clearly? If there’s anything mismatched at the end of the month, you will be fully responsible for it.”
It was indeed that voice. Being transferred from the design department to the logistics department was most likely the doing of this woman.
Yvonne finally got a clear look at Maria. She had a harsh appearance, a slender figure, and wore a pair of high-prescription glasses.
“I have counted them clearly”" Yvonne placed the list on the desk.
Without even looking at it, Maria said with a stern expression, “Go count it again and come back to me only when you are sure there are no problems.”
Yvonne was filled with anger and naturally didn't want to go through the motions for nothing.
"I will take responsibility for every word on the list, so don't bother me and just sign it."
"Bother you? What kind of status do you have that's worth my special attention?" Maria looked disdainfully at Yvonne. "You were put in the design department's drawing group. Your drawing approval rate was only thirty percent. If you can't perform well in the logistics department either, you might as well go home."
"FA Center Company has over two hundred employees, and as the supervisor of the finance department, you know that I, a newcomer who just joined, have a drawing approval rate of thirty percent. I'm really flattered," Yvonne laughed lightly, staring at Maria.
Maria realized she had said the wrong thing and quickly said, "You're the worst performer in the drawing group, I don't want to know more."
"If it wasn't for your deliberate favoritism, my drawings wouldn't have been rejected time and time again, and I wouldn't have been transferred to the logistics department, right?" Yvonne chose to expose her true colors directly.
"I have no grudges with you, so don't wrongly accuse me. If you dare to make baseless claims again, I will report you for defamation!" Maria stood up angrily and slammed the desk heavily.
Yvonne smiled casually and said, "I heard and recorded the conversation you had when you were walking in the stairwell and making a phone call! A friend of mine is keeping that audio for me. If you want to listen, I can have my friend send it to me right away."
Maria's face turned pale. She picked up a pen and quickly wrote her name below the list.
Yvonne folded the list and said, “We’ll have plenty of opportunities to interact in the future. We have a long way to go.”
Maria slumped into her office chair.
Back at the logistics department, Yvonne handed the list to Victoria.
Paul leaned in beside Yvonne, wearing a flattering smile, and said, "It's quite a loss to have such a beautiful lady like you in the logistics department!"
"Not really," Yvonne replied flatly.
Victoria slapped Paul hard on the back and scolded, "She's a graduate from a prestigious university. Even if she's in the logistics department, she's not in the same class as us. Don't you dare have any inappropriate thoughts!"
Paul chuckled and returned to his seat.
Yvonne was the youngest employee in the logistics department, and Victoria assigned her tasks that required using the computer.
As it was nearing the end of their shift, Yvonne received a voice message from Joseph. "Auntie, there's a parent meeting at the school tomorrow morning. You must come!"
She quickly agreed.
Joseph sent a smiling emoji and another voice message. "Old Harper went to work at the Harper Group today. He was very unhappy."
Yvonne wondered why but then thought to herself, “What does Elijah's happiness or unhappiness have to do with me?”
After work, Paul immediately approached Yvonne's desk and asked if she wanted to go for barbecue together.
Yvonne didn't want to give him any false hope. She said straightforwardly, "Sorry, my boyfriend has invited me for dinner tonight."
Paul awkwardly walked away.
While looking for her car in the underground parking lot, Yvonne spotted Michael.
Instantly, Michael's face reminded her of Joseph. Their noses and lips bore a striking resemblance!
Due to his relationship with Abigail, Yvonne wasn't prepared to greet him and pretended not to notice, keeping her head down.
However, Michael called out, "Miss Brooks, what a coincidence!"
"Why are you here at FA Center Company?" Yvonne forced a stiff smile.
"The board of directors summoned me. There are a few matters that need confirmation," said Michael in a calm and refined voice.
"Are you getting used to FA Center Company? If someone disrespects you, let me know," he continued.
Yvonne's mind wandered, unsure if Michael would actually help her.
Testing the waters, she said, "Elijah told me I could join FA Center Company. I should thank you for your help."
Michael gave a faint smile and replied, "I merely said a few words for you, it wasn't much of a help. But Elijah, we've known each other for many years, and it's the first time he has asked me for a favor."
From his words, Yvonne could sense a hint of joy and honor. She couldn't believe that Michael was unaware of her past with Anthony, as she was his sister's rival in love.
He could lend a hand for only one reason— Elijah!
So what exactly is the relationship between Elijah and Michael? After careful consideration, Yvonne said, "Thank you, I'm doing well at FA Center Company."
"That's good," Michael nodded with relief and changed the subject. "Elijah has been stationed at the Harper Group recently and will be very busy. Please understand."
After bidding farewell to Michael, Yvonne got into her car. It was clear that Michael cared a great deal about Elijah.
If she wanted to establish herself at FA Center Company, she had to firmly hold onto Michael as her support. She couldn't afford to offend Elijah now.
After thinking it over, she realized that staying at FA Center Company was more important than her pride. She decided to forgive Elijah for his arrogance and impoliteness. She found Elijah's phone number and dialed it.
