Chapter 52 I'll Remember This Debt
It seemed that time had stopped.
The light in the corridor outside the room was bright and glaring, while the interior of the room remained dim and unclear.
Elijah stood at the intersection of light and darkness, his body frozen in place, and a darkness flickered in his pitch-black eyes.
From his perspective, Yvonne was pinned down on the floor by Anthony, their clothes disheveled, and they were in a compromising position.
It had to be said that Grace's timing for this scheme was impeccable.
Through Elijah's gaze, Yvonne could perceive a deep chill and a desire to strangle her.
Anthony, at this moment, had a flushed face, his remaining sanity crumbling. His hands grew increasingly audacious on Yvonne's body!
"Save me!" Yvonne weakly shouted toward Elijah. "Grace has set me up!"
With a stern face, Elijah walked quickly into the room and pulled Anthony up before delivering a punch.
Anthony let out a miserable scream and immediately lost consciousness.
Elijah stood with his back facing her. His hands were clenched tightly.
Yvonne curled up, picking up her coat from the floor to cover her nearly naked body.
She softly called out his name, but he seemed not to have heard her, remaining unmoved.
"I was reckless and fell into Grace's trap," she said, supporting herself against the wall and standing up after several attempts.
Elijah remained silent.
"I called Grace all day, and she asked me to meet her at Glory Diner. As soon as I entered the private room, I felt weak all over and was brought to this room by someone." Her voice was barely audible.
"Anthony was also deceived into coming here. When you kicked down the door, he even urged me to leave quickly..."
Elijah suddenly sneered and turned around.
"Don't make excuses for yourself. I only believe what I see. Just now, I saw you and Anthony entangled on the floor..."
Indeed, it was true.
A mist filled Yvonne's eyes.
There was frustration, unwillingness, and determination.
"Do you forgive me?" She straightened her back, swallowing the tears in her eyes.
"Why should I?" Elijah held her wrist and pressed her against the wall, resentfully whispering in her ear, "Give me a reason to forgive you, hmm?"
She had severed ties with the Winston family, her entry for the competition was yet to yield results, and the amount of money George's illness required remained unknown.
She needed Elijah's support in all of this.
If their just-established friends-with-benefits relationship ended like this, her future would not be easy.
"Anthony and I were manipulated; nothing happened between us, so there was no betrayal on my part. You have to forgive me."
"Yvonne!" A touch of sadness appeared in Elijah's eyes. "Since getting to know you, I have done many foolish things. It is time to put an end to it."
"What do you mean?" She pretended not to understand.
In reality, she was trying to salvage a shred of dignity for herself.
"What do I mean? It's over." Elijah suddenly let go of her. "One hour. Get your things out of Rhode Hills within one hour, or else I'll throw them in the trash. Let's pretend we don't know each other from now on."
Upon hearing this, Yvonne felt an inexplicable pain in her body, as if her limbs and bones were aching.
"Fine!" She forced out a smile that was worse than crying. "I temporarily can't repay you for the medical expenses you paid for George. Should I write an IOU or-"
"Consider it as your reward for accompanying me." Elijah glanced at her, his gaze filled with disdain and contempt.
"You're really generous." She nodded gracefully.
Elijah's eyes turned cold. "I will delete all of your contact information. Winslow is a small place, so in order to avoid any future encounters, please try to stay away from my activities as much as possible."
"Okay." Yvonne's teeth gnashed.
Elijah stormed off, slamming the door.
Perhaps due to the loud noise of the door slamming, Anthony, who was lying on the ground, whimpered.
Yvonne snapped back to her senses, found her phone, and called for an ambulance. Then she ran out of the hotel, holding her clothes.
She returned to Sunshine Community and took a hot shower.
With her eyes closed, she let the water from the showerhead pour over her body.
At that moment, hot tears streamed down her cheeks.
Elijah was also in a bad mood.
After finishing his lunch, he was about to take a nap when he received a call from an unfamiliar number, saying that Yvonne and a man had checked into a hotel room together. Even the room number was clearly mentioned.
He wasn't an impulsive person, so he naturally suspected foul play.
He rushed over immediately and saw Yvonne entangled with Anthony, completely naked. His sanity collapsed instantly.
If it was another man pressing himself on top of Yvonne, he would have composed himself and found the mastermind behind it all.
But seeing Anthony, the jealousy that had been lurking in the depths of his heart instantly consumed him.
What he couldn't tolerate was not only witnessing this scene firsthand, but also Yvonne and Anthony's past...
Taking Yvonne to the hospital early in the morning and paying for George's medical expenses, the more he thought about these two things, the more absurd they seemed.
Even more absurd was the fact that he voluntarily called Yvonne and asked if she needed money, posing as her boyfriend.
Clearly, it was just a physical transaction involving no emotions, but he took it too seriously.
He asked himself why he had done this.
All the answers pointed to that woman.
Now he was somewhat sober. Only by severing this transactional relationship could he be reborn and find his true self again.
After leaving the hotel, he could have chosen to avoid her, but he still returned to Rhode Hills.
When Yvonne entered, he deliberately went to the study instead of waiting in the living room as he had been.
In less than ten minutes, Yvonne's slightly hoarse voice came from the living room. "I'm leaving."
He bit his lip hard, not responding.
After a few seconds of silence, Yvonne chose not to say anything else and left.
Elijah sat in the study for a while before entering her bedroom, the place where she often slept, and closed his eyes, greedily taking in a deep breath.
The room still retained her presence, very faint, but also ephemeral; like his acquaintance with her, so fragile and shallow, waiting only for the passage of time to be buried in the world.
After leaving Rhode Hills, Yvonne quickly figured out Grace's scheme and suspected that Edward had aided her.
Now that she had lost Elijah as her backer, she had to rely on herself for everything.
Even though she knew it was Grace who was harming her, she temporarily had no ability to fight back.
But she was angry in her heart, so she dialed Grace's phone.
"Sister, how did the play I arranged for you go? Tell me, am I more courageous than before?" Grace's sweet voice was grating.
"I admit defeat this time. I underestimated your malevolence," Yvonne said disdainfully. "There'll be plenty of opportunities in the future, Grace, and I'll remember this score."
"I'm honored," Grace giggled. "I won't pay a dime for George's hospitalization, but I can attend his funeral. If he can't hold on any longer and passes away, you must let me know!"
"If George passes away one day, he will surely go to you and Mary every night to chat. Because in his heart, you are the people he loves the most-"
Yvonne hadn't finished speaking when Grace angrily hung up the phone.
She drove back to FA Center Company.
The logistics department was bustling. Everyone was talking about the arrival of the company's shareholders for an inspection.
Yvonne had no interest in matters that didn't concern her.
Victoria cleared her throat and loudly said, "The shareholders will come to our logistics department later. Let's all perk up and greet them in the best condition."
"What about a raise? If there's no raise, then there's no need to welcome them!" Paul deliberately interrupted.
Another employee said, "It's common for the design and marketing departments to get a raise, but we're just doing odd jobs. Forget about it!"
"Then they should just bypass the logistics department."
As everyone discussed, the office door was pushed open from the outside, and seven or eight well-dressed individuals walked in one after another.
Victoria and a smooth-talking employee went to greet them.
Then came a pompous exchange of pleasantries.
The few employees who had just said they didn't want the big shots to come had faces full of flattery and fawning.
Yvonne sat at her desk, thinking about going to the Winston family after work to return the money.
"Why is Miss Brooks in the logistics department?" Michael suddenly spoke up, making Yvonne the center of attention in the room.
Her colleague pulled at her sleeve, and only then did she snap out of it.
Michael's expression became grave. "Miss Brooks, you are from the design department. Why are you here?"
"I..." Yvonne mustered up her spirit and smiled, "I'm here to experience life in the logistics department."
Michael, a clever man, didn't ask any further questions. He leaned toward Finn, the CEO of FA Center Company, and whispered a few words.
Finn nodded continuously.
The important figures interacted with everyone for a while before leaving.
"Yvonne, wait for good luck to come!" Victoria said as they were seeing them off.
In the past, Yvonne would have responded with hope, but the hotel incident had dragged Anthony into trouble, causing a rift between Elijah and her.
She had no personal connections with Michael; he only helped her because of Elijah or Anthony, but now...
She decided to stay in the logistics department and keep a low profile.
When it was almost time to leave work, she received a notice to transfer back to the design department.
Instead of immediately moving back, she dialed Michael's number.
Michael didn't answer.
Her phone rang, and she thought it was Michael, so she quickly answered, "Mr. Watson - "
"Miss Brooks, I am George's attending physician. Ten minutes ago, George's surgical wound suddenly started bleeding, and the A-blood type in the blood bank is running low. Please come to the hospital immediately, just in case."
Yvonne hurried to Winslow Hospital first and had a detailed blood test done.
When the results came out, it showed that her blood type did not match George's at all.
Fortunately, with the treatment, George's surgical wound finally stopped bleeding.
Yvonne looked at George through the glass window of the ICU for a while before preparing to leave.
"It's incredible how many strange things happen when you're working at the hospital! The daughter of the lady in the ICU we pushed yesterday didn't have a single matching point in her blood."
"That clearly means they are not biologically related! But as doctors, we can only say that their blood types don't match. If you work a few more years, you won't find it strange anymore."
The low conversation between the two nurses reached Yvonne's ears.
Yvonne's head exploded with a bang.
If George loved her even a bit, she wouldn't think the nurses were talking about her.
Every time George mocked her before, she would ask, "Am I not your biological daughter?" George's expression would then become unnatural instantly.
If she wasn't his biological daughter, everything would make perfect sense.
She forced herself to calm down.
You can't fully trust others. The best solution is to do a paternity test!
