Chapter 29 – Nick and Davis
While Frank McCarty was still pointing his shotgun at her, Lisa made a small growl and nodded, trying to smile with her big mouth full of teeth. Sharon rushed to the desk to grab the notebook and the pen, and carefully, she approached the bed, trying not to step on any pieces of flesh or pools of blood on the plastic cover. Lisa pointed with her head to her clawed and furry paws that were still dripping blood, and Frank arrived with a big towel that he used to clean his daughter’s paws, fingers, and claws. When she had clean paws, Lisa grabbed the notebook and, with an enormous effort for trying to grab such a small pen with her long claws in the way, Lisa wrote a message that she then showed to her parents.
Frank read it aloud, pure happiness on his face. “This is so cool! I am here!”
Sharon couldn’t believe what she was reading. She used the towel to clean the big snout full of teeth and half-opened in a weird smile, going next to Lisa’s body. Frank opened the restraints and asked, “Lisa, do you think it’s safe?”
Receiving a nod and a weird smile back, he opened the handcuffs on her wrists and ankles and took off the strong chain from around her body that tied her to the bed. Lisa carefully got out of bed while using the towel to clean her body, being careful not to step on the flesh and blood that was on the plastic cover. With careful movements, she and her parents wrapped the plastic cover in a ball, and Sharon then put the ball inside one thick garbage bag that was hidden in the safe inside Lisa’s closet.
Sharon wrapped the bag and joined her husband, who was seated on the edge of the bed, touching Lisa’s fur on her long snout. “Amazing… Your fur is so smooth… You are taller and curvier! Did you feel any pain while you were changing? Because you used to scream a lot, this time you just grunted!”
Lisa shook her open hand, showing that the pain was not so bad, and she then got up and waved her tail. She made a low growl and pointed at her now bigger boobs, making her mother laugh. “Hahaha! Yes, I know, the women on my side of the family never had big boobs, but you have two big ones now! This means that you don’t need to be restrained on full moons, and you can also change at will, right? What do you do now to change back?”
Lisa pointed to her closet and went there, returning with a clean, big towel that she placed on the floor. She began taking deep breaths and did as Nick told her to, thinking happy thoughts about Davis kissing her, about his smile, and about her will to become Human again. Her Werewolf body turned into dust, and fell over the towel in a torrent, faster than it took for her to change into Werewolf. In less than one minute, Lisa was completely naked and smiling at her parents.
She quickly cleaned her body with her hands to take off the remaining dust and wrapped the towel. She then looked at her parents with a big smile. “And this is the end of my show, folks! Thanks for coming today!”
Sharon hugged her daughter, unable to hold her tears anymore. “My sweet daughter! You don’t need to feel so much pain! Every time you changed, I felt almost like dying with your screams, because I could see it hurt you so much! How do you feel? Didn’t hurt?”
“Well, changing back is like tooth pain. It’s annoying but bearable. Changing into a Werewolf hurts more, but I can manage it. Aniya thinks that the more times we change, our bodies and our minds get used to it, and it will probably stop hurting one day. This ability will be so useful! I already know that I have like five times more strength when I am a Werewolf, but since I also know how to fight, no Hunter will ever be able to harm me. I can also smell, hear, and see better, even in complete darkness.”
Frank gave a big smile. “And when I make a nice front page about them, they will need to hide under the nearest rock because the public will demand to know more.”
“It’s better if you hold that for a while, father. Let me first see how things turn out. There is a group of Werewolves that can turn when they want to, and Nick is infiltrated there. He and Aniya are going to use the Hunters to kill all those Werewolves because even when they are Human, they like to eat people. Imagine how dangerous they will be if they ever learn how to remain conscient after the change? One thing is having the Hunters or me fighting mindless beasts. Another completely distinct thing is fighting conscientious Werewolves like me. If the general public finds out there are Werewolves that like to eat Humans, it’s open hunting season, and the Hunters will get tonnes of new recruits.”
“The public has the right to know, Lisa, but I understand your reasons. Eventually, we will need to announce this to the World if there is indeed a blood mutation and more people suffer from it. I think that such a discovery would make our society shake, and I can’t even imagine what could happen.”
Lisa gave an awkward smile. “Well, Aniya predicated a full-out war between Humans and Werewolves. If it were only mindless beasts, the Humans would win. But with conscious Werewolves? Normal Humans don’t have a chance. It’s better if you keep your mouth shut and your typing fingers inside your pockets unless you want to be the one causing the extinction of normal Humans. We also found out that there are a lot more Werewolves than we thought, but they all hide that.”
“I… didn’t think… I see… Yeah, normal Humans like you say, would be in danger, but the silver grants Hunters an enormous advantage.”
“Nick told me his conversation with the leader of that strange pack of Werewolves. According to that leader, he has been killing Hunters for twenty years, and silver only slows him down, but his beast side still manages to kill the Hunter and escape to fight another day. Imagine a conscious Werewolf fighting someone armed with a gun and silver ammunition. The Werewolf would take his head even after being shot, and he would go after the next target. Or, that Werewolf could be able to avoid being shot, if we include in that fight the almost light-speed reflexes and speed of a Werewolf.”
Frank gulped, finally realising the danger that came along with Lisa’s new ability. She made an awkward smile before grabbing her pyjamas from her closet. “What about if I went for a shower and you went with mother to the dining room to drink something? You are awfully pale, father. Don’t worry, Aniya and Nick are already thinking about the future, and the first thing on their agenda is to get rid of those cannibal Humans.”
While Lisa was in her room and talking with her parents, Davis arrived at the restaurant where Nick was supposed to be.
When he entered, there was only one table occupied in one corner, away from the window. The waiter who greeted Davis at the door directed him to an empty table next to the table with the solemn green-eyed man.
After glancing at the menu and ordering his food, Davis waited for the waiter to leave, before asking in a low voice while looking at his phone, “Mister Nick Kerrish, I presume? Miss Aniya said hi.”
“Are you Davis? How is she?”
“It’s Mister Davis to you. We didn’t study together, you were never one of my acquaintances, and you never saw me piss to address me as one of your buddies. As for Miss Aniya, she is worried sick because of you, of course. I hope you don’t intend to do something rash because it will force me to intervene and ruin your cover.”
Nick frowned and took a sip of his wine, while whispering, “Aniya told you to do that?”
“No, she did not. But I won’t be the one telling her you died because I didn’t act. I don’t care if your mission is important. If I see you in danger, I will kill them all and take you by force if needed. I advise you not to resist me because I won’t hesitate to knock you out and drag your butt out of danger.”
“No one ever told you that you are too violent? You are making it too hard for me to like you.”
Davis grinned behind the piece of bread he was eating. “Who told you I am worried about whether or not you like me, dumbass? I care about Miss Aniya, nothing more. If you ever make her cry or suffer, I won’t stop until I find you and I will kill you in the most painful way possible. I know you have been escaping Hunters since you were sixteen, but near me, you are still a mere child playing Werewolf. Don’t mess with me or make Miss Aniya sad, and we will get along just fine. If I see her shed one tear because of you, I will give you the biggest beating you have ever gotten in your life, I will wait for you to heal, and I will beat you again.”
Nick jolted and looked at his phone while answering, “You are too violent, Mister Davis. Did you ever act like that with your former Alpha?”
“My Alpha was a great man, and the best friend I could ever find. You are just a reckless man that joined a dangerous pack of Werewolves and that is making Miss Aniya worried. Now shut the fuck up because you are making the waiter suspicious. He already looked at us three times.”
Nick tried to explain, “I… didn’t see him looking even once!”
“Like I said, you are a child playing Werewolf. Use your ears, dumdum. You will hear his neck rubbing the collar of his shirt when he looks at us. You will hear him pausing his breath in an obvious attempt to hear us. Dumbass, I have no idea what Miss Aniya saw in you. I have been talking with you for less than two minutes, and I already want to break your neck because of your annoying stupidity.”
Nick took a sip of his glass of wine and went silent. He glanced at Davis from time to time, only to see a frown appear on his forehead, making Nick wonder how he noticed every single time.
When they were already eating, Nick asked in a whisper, “How things go with Lisa? Aniya told me you felt the bond with her for some years, and you fought against it because of Aniya. How did you manage that? I could barely hold myself from running after Aniya the first time I saw her!”
“Because you are a weak dumbass, that’s why. While I was driving her to her company, she told me how you almost got caught by her father when you went to meet her. You sure are dumb! I don’t know how a Hunter hasn’t killed you yet. You were probably lucky, or they were just a bunch of stupid people. The call of the bond is strong, but with enough training and will, anyone can endure it, no matter the circumstances. Someone poorly trained you, for sure. At least you have me around now because there is no way I will let a weak-minded man near Miss Aniya without a proper train. You will be responsible for protecting her when I am not around, so you better rise to the challenge, or I will punch you as hard I can.”
“Darn, Mister Davis! Relax, will you? In my defence, I can say I survived all these years because I either escaped before the Hunters got near me, or I killed the ones that were getting too close. While you remained near Aniya to protect her, I spent the last few years killing Hunters every time I found one near me. I didn’t go after them on purpose, but every time I found one, he would die. While you lost the members of your pack, I lost my entire family and friends. One night was enough for an enormous group of Hunters to kill them all, even babies. I am not weak-minded as you may think, but damn me if I won’t make sure to kill anyone that threatens Aniya!”
