Chapter 102: Skye
"I won't leave." My voice catches on a sob. I bury my face in Silas' lap, clinging to the sides of his chair.
The fortress is in chaos and has been from the moment the ash started falling from the sky, landing in thick heaps on our city streets. Wolfe knew immediately what was happening, confirmed it with Sanctuaries on the East coast. Sanctuaries that don't stand a chance of outrunning the nuclear horror settling down upon all of us. They will be worst hit, but we aren't much better off.
In an effort to follow their prey and outrun the fallout, Primitives from all across the land are attacking the walls of our Sanctuaries. We can only stand for so long against such an onslaught. Our own Sanctuary is weakening as the wall crumbles and the Primitives find their way through.
Reports come in of attacks all over the city, of Primitives driving people from their homes and out into the panicked streets. We've allowed many of the more vulnerable citizens into the fortress, but we've reached our capacity. Soon the Primitives will find their way inside and we'll all be doomed. Even my own immunity to the bite won't save me from being torn apart.
"You must go with Wolfe, my love." Silas gently runs a shaking hand over my head, the way he knows I love to be touched.
"I won't leave you!" I snarl fiercely into the fabric of his pants.
Gentle hands wrap around me from behind and tug.
Hannah tries to pull me to my feet, but I resist. "Stand up, my darling, we need to get you out of here. Sanctuary is falling, and the people need you if they are to escape."
Silas has made it clear that he is unable to travel any kind of long distance. I tried to suggest we just make it into the mountains where we can hide out, but he refuses. He thinks he only has a few weeks left anyway and he doesn't want to spend the last minutes of his life on the road, uncomfortable and in pain. I refuse to allow him to spend the last moments of his life alone.
"No," I snap, "I'm not leaving him, just go!"
I look up in time to see her exchange a look with someone behind us. I lean over and look around Silas' chair. Wolfe is standing at the ready. I thought he left when the fortress staff abandoned the building.
"Darling, it's time for you to go now," Hannah says softly, stepping back. Wolfe rounds the chair and tugs my clinging hands from Silas, lifting me right of my feet and into his strong arms.
I shriek and resist, thrusting an elbow back into his neck. He tightens his hold and turns away from Hannah and Silas.
"He won't be alone," Hannah assures me, standing next to our husband and placing her hand on his shoulder.
"No!" I scream. "Silas!"
