Chapter 70: Talon
Sanctuary New Tucson is not an easy city to slip into and out of. The wall is ridiculously high and solid, the security personnel sharp, but I'm resourceful, tough and determined. I was ejected from the city several days ago with just a few of my supplies and a dozen bruises as souvenirs of my visit. The Warlord must expect me to die in the desert. No vehicle, few supplies, and badly beaten. I've seen worse conditions though. A little adversity is incentive to rise up stronger.
I found my way around the city and into old Tucson, a hazardous place I'd been warned about in prison. The perfect place to find shelter and recover. The few starving Primitives I came across were easy kills, hardly worth the time to stop. But one had still been wearing the shoes he'd died in, or been turned, as some prefer to call it. My personal belief is that a bitten human is a dead human. The heart may still beat, but no one's home upstairs.
Wearing my new shoes, I built a bunker for myself in an old elementary school in the crumbling ruins of the former city. The school is one of the few buildings left standing that can provide half decent shelter. A place to hide out, gather my strength and heal while I formulated my plan to get back into the city.
The wall had been a daunting prospect. I had to watch the security rotations over the course of a week. After I figured them out, I attempted the wall, only to fail, slipping and falling a dozen feet and landing on my back. I took a time out after that, reassessed. I'd assumed the wall would be easy considering the rumours I'd heard of the Desert Wren climbing it repeatedly. If that tiny woman I'd seen during the Primitive attack could climb it, so could I. After my first botched attempt, I'd been forced to set aside my ego and attack the wall with more caution, testing a few different sites to find an easier way over.
I tried and failed a few more times, learning what worked and didn't work until finally, I succeeded. I'd made it over and into some kind of industrial section of the city. Most of the buildings were unused shells, but a few were still in operation, enabling me to steal supplies and take them back over into my hideout in Old Tucson. Now, after almost two weeks of preparation I'm just about ready to get the fuck out of Fuentes' territory. Something tells me the man isn't into giving second chances. He'll have me executed on sight if he finds me within the city limits.
But before I go, I need to take something of his.
And, as luck would have it, I manage to find her without even searching. She's been making regular trips into the industrial sector of Sanctuary, exploring the barns and greenhouses with only minimal protection in tow. She's going to make this capture very much easier than I'd expected.
If the Santa Fe Warlord was willing to pay as much as he did for one fiery beauty, how much will he pay for the set? A sister, the exact replica except this one is smaller, feistier and younger. Warlord Silas will pay top dollar if he wants the opportunity of breaking the Desert Wren and adding her to his harem.
