A deadly bite and sight
Has anyone else planned for something and it went just according to plan? Or perhaps you didn’t plan, you only wished for it to happen and it did? Even though it is out of your control?
Of course, there would be lots of people. And some never got their plans into reality because of some unfortunate factors. Sadly, Tony belonged to the second category of people on this particular day.
Since his arrival at school, he had been anticipating the arrival of Wendy Bayn. The way her presence spoke to him, the way it stimulates self-calming hormones in him is something he can’t have enough of. He needed to see her. To speak to her, but she wasn’t in school. And there was no way in hell he would go meet the principal to ask him about her. That would be creepy, wouldn’t it? He doesn’t want to create a bad impression of himself to anyone yet.
After school ended and he couldn’t see her, there was only one thing left for him to do. To go see his Pharmacist.
Every day before entering the pharmacy, he always read the banner at the top of the pharmacy. "Divine Shield Pharmacy. We care, God heals. We are open 24/7".
He strode in with a different gait than he had while coming. His emotions have not changed. He still feels disappointed for not seeing Wendy. But he had to come in lively like he always does, so the nurse doesn't ask him what's wrong.
Ll
"yo! Tony. How are you doing, boy? How was school?" the Pharmacist asked immediately if he saw Tony opening the door. Tony doesn't know the man's name, so he calls him what everyone around calls him “Doctor”. Tony feels the man should be of middle age or above. The man act towards him in a friendly manner but Tony doesn't want to believe the man cares for him or is interested in his affairs. He holds the man as an acquaintance. Someone who only showed friendship because he buys things from him, and not because he understands him. He needs someone who would understand him. Someone who knows his family and yet doesn't care. someone who would... There is a long list of what he wants from that someone but it is sad thinking about that.
"I'm a good Doctor. how is your day going?" he replied the pharmacist
"It's been fine. Just a little bit tired. I think I might take a break tomorrow and let my apprentice do the work. He has learnt a great deal, so taking over shouldn’t be hard for him" the pharmacist said, smiling at his success of being able to fully train someone.
"That will be good. Even if you are all word" Tony replied
"I am serious. I think I need the rest. I am only getting older" the man said,
"Let's see what tomorrow shall be sir. By the way, where is he?" Tony asked
"He should be at the store. He said he wants to eat or something."
Tony knows where the store is because that wouldn't be the first time he has been directed there. The pharmacy is just like a typical pharmacy. Smells like drugs and at times smells like vomit. It's painted white and has a long line of drugs of different kinds and names that Tony can't pronounce. He doesn't even bother himself with the names because he does not need them. The only thing he is interested in is getting the sleep pills and codeine cough syrup from Daniel - the pharmacist apprentice-. Both of them wouldn't have been friends if they had not met while randomly discussing how they help cope with their emotions. They had met on a WhatsApp group chat and had linked up since then.
"Daniel, are you there?" Tony called out nearing the dark store.
"Ho! Tony.”
“What’s happening mate? How are you doing?” Tony asked stretching his hand to shake Daniel.
“Man! I am just here not doing much. I am trying to get this song's lyrics into my head.” Daniel replied.
What? Get a song lyrics to his head? Why?
“Oh good! I never knew you were a rapper” Tony asked.
“Well, the thing is I plan on not coming to work tomorrow, I have to go out with this new girl I met. And we are going for a karaoke” he said and giggled.
What is he saying? Tony wondered. Just now, the Doctor said he plans on not coming tomorrow. And his apprentice has his plans too. He became interested in knowing what would happen between both of them when they learn of each other’s plans.
“Well, Daniel. That’s the first time I hear you speak of any girl.” Tony said and realized Daniel was no longer interested in him. He tapped him.
“The stuff” he mouthed loudly to him.
“Right. Just give me a minute” Daniel said and went deeper into the dark store.
Daniel returned with a paper bag and gave it to Tony. Tony kept it immediately in his bag.
“Thanks, man! I appreciate it” Tony said and left the store after giving Daniel some cash. He lifted his feet and walked cautiously not to make any dragging noise since the pharmacy is a silent one. He sat down on a chair waiting for some minutes so he could leave. This was insurance against any suspicion from the pharmacist.
Moments later, he drifts off thinking about Wendy Bayn. Wondering what sort of person she is and how wonderful she might be. Thoughts of her being an aggressive and non-tolerating type came to his head, but he dismissed it. If they ever get to become friends, he would ask her sometime, why she hadn’t come today.
He was brought back to reality by hurriedly walking feet and wails. He stood up from where he was sitting and saw a man, carrying another young man in. Seconds later, another person was carried in. The people that were carried in look so lifeless He wondered if they were dead. He was scared but people rushed in and only then did he notice blood dripping from both men that were carried.
The pharmacist called out to Daniel to bring the first aid kit. Tony, still not knowing what had happened, echoed the pharmacist's orders to Daniel. Hopefully, Daniel would hear him and hurry with the first aid kit.
"We don't know what happened in particular but all of a sudden, their car crashed to the roadside stone." the man who carried the first victim explained. "We just brought them here as fast as we can," the man told the pharmacist who began treating them immediately.
Tony wondered why they hadn’t called an ambulance. Even though the pharmacy wasn’t so far from the crash site, he would have called the ambulance. He felt that would be safer than an old pharmacy.
Tony would have loved to stay longer to see the victims get consciousness and explain what happened. But he could barely stand the strong copper-like scent of blood. If he stayed any minute longer, he would puke. So, he left.
He left the pharmacy with eyes still turning back to see if people would react to the men gaining consciousness or if they were dead. He saw nothing till he took a bend that restricted him from seeing the pharmacy. Now he is on his way home, he still has to walk for about 10 minutes or more till he gets home. He prays silently that his parents will not be back from their businesses, else he would have to use the pill he just bought. It was when darkness began encroaching that he realized he had had a nap at the pharmacy. The thought about Wendy might have been a dream.
He began walking faster than he would. It was getting dark and he had to pass through the lonely road between the woods. The trees beside the paved road weren't tall and thick but he still had reasons to fear. he could get kidnapped or attacked by some ruffians. With the trees around, he wished what he had read in novels and seen in movies were true. He wishes he could just turn into some monkey and jump quickly to his home. He thought about how nice it would be to teleport or have super speed like the flash or some powerful animal-human hybrid.
“That would be fun,” he thought aloud.
He began thinking about what he would do if he had a superpower and how cool he would be. He ran for a few seconds with his hands stretched behind him, hoping he would run as fast as anime characters. He did hand signs like Naruto. Growled like werewolves and vampires. Make gestures like Doctor Strange. He did a lot of what superheroes do and for some moment, he was out of reality and forgot about Wendy Bayn and his parents. He forgot how people hated him and forgot how scared he was of the route he was commuting.
He was immersed in his thoughts till he could feel a flash of light or a glint, in the peripheral of his right eye. It was dim. He wondered what it was. He looked towards where he felt the light come from. He kept moving forward, and the fact about where he was returned to him. He increased his pace.
He hadn't moved far when the same light blinked again and he saw where it came from. The light came faster and brighter than it did earlier on.
“a beaming purple light in the middle of the woods?” he thought aloud.
He wondered what it was and he heard thuds from the place he felt the light come from. He felt some form of excitement in him. He tried moving but he couldn’t. He became sweaty and his heart began beating faster. He could feel his blood rush to his head. It felt like his head was expanding.
He smiled and controlled his breathing. All of a sudden, he heard grunting, slashing, and quick snapping of trees. At this point, he was sure it was a wild animal. He began sneaking away from where he was towards his house. He had gone closer to his house than to the pharmacy. Else, he would have turned back.
Either he was foolish or daring, he doesn’t know. But he couldn’t help but go towards where he heard the grunting. He hasn’t gotten over the fear in him. But something has overwhelmed the fear.
Moving closer to the scene, he didn’t watch around him but he could see a large man lying down. Then he saw a very large bear-like creature bending over him. The creature was as large as one of the biggest Gorillas he saw at Lagos Zoo. The creature was larger than a gorilla but in the shape of a wolf. It is a giant wolf. It was passing a purple-blue-like light from his mouth into that of the large man lying down. It kept doing it for the next twenty seconds till a white crystal passed from the creature alongside the light into the large man.
While the light was going through the beast, he could see changes occurring to the beast's body. It was reduced in size. It was still way bigger than a gorilla. He doesn’t know its height but he could guess it is around ten feet or more. The large man that was receiving the light was unconscious. His eyes were glowing. His body began glowing too. But immediately, the light stopped, the large man stopped glowing but the size of the giant wolf was still reducing.
“I better not move an inch,” he thought to himself. He could see how intimidating the creature was. The creature noticed Tony immediately and the light stopped. He shot an angry look at Tony.
In all honesty, Tony couldn’t see its eyes. It was dark. The moon was out but not a full moon. It wasn’t even strong enough to illuminate the woods.
The giant wolf snarled. It began moving towards Tony. They were a bit far apart. Enough for Tony to build momentum to get into full motion. Tony started running immediately and then he realized the unfortunate situation he is in.
He is in the woods. It is dark. While running, he bumped into some sort of little bump which could be a tree or just a little pothole. He would run for a few seconds and land on a lying tree where he expected flat terrain. At times, he would step on a shrub and realize it’s deeper than he thought. He had no torch with him or any other source of light.
Still running, Tony looked back for a moment and saw how drastic there has been a change in the shape of the giant wolf. The surprise nearly had Tony stop running for a moment. The giant wolf has become barely taller than him now and it was catching up fast.
“God, please. If you can help me out of this situation, I promise to worship you forever.” He prayed within him. He had devised a plan of running in zigzag. It was either he overrated himself or the fear made him forget how unaccustomed he is to run in the woods. He has never even walked in the dark not to talk of running in it.
He ran forward still not knowing what exactly was before him, and he landed on a fallen tree. It is one of those trees in the woods that fell months ago and termites had begun feasting it from within. The tree already became a large mash.
He tripped and fell. He felt sharp pain all over him but he didn't give to pain. He was quick to stand up. He turned around and checked how far the creature is from him, but rather, he turned his jugular vein directly away from the creature. The creature dashed past him. The giant wolf is already the size of a German Shepherd.
He stood up and removed his leg that was trapped in the wood, but before he could run, the creature jumped on him, bit his arm. He tried pushing it off of him. The creature itself lost balance and rolled over Tony.
He stood up crying. He began limping. The creature jumped towards him. It has become smaller. It bit his thigh and made him lose balance. Tony's pain was immeasurable at this moment. He gave in to every single pain that has been stinging him and fell. Right before his head was a rock that might have once been a land's corner piece. His head landed directly on it. His vision became blurry instantly, followed by a heavy migraine. He became weak gradually and the only thing he remembered thinking of was how his life could change either for good or worse if only he had the chance to meet Wendy Bayn.
