Murdered
"Just wondering, what if the lieutenant denies our request?" Doyin asked the Doctor, just to break the silence.
"Why would he ever reject? This is a chance for us to go further in our research. We would gain national acceptance" Zayyad answered. He knew there would be no reason for the Lieutenant to reject.
"But just in case. It's not like what I am saying is outside the realm of possibility." Doyin argued
"We would have to talk him into acceptance"
"You are pretty confident in your oratory skills then." Doyin smiled at Zayyad. Zayyad knew when it comes to oratory prowess, he is just an average person. There is no way he can convince people with words without proof. But he also knew that the Lieutenant would accept him regardless of the poorness of his speech.
After all, his father is a senator of the house of senate. His father has links everywhere in the country. His father is known all around the country, and he is known as his father's son. The day he became popular due to the influence of his father, was when his father mentioned him on a live television broadcast.
When his father had announced to the whole of the country that he will withdraw his son from the united Kingdom and make him work in Nigeria. He will make his son serve his country just like he is doing. His father did that without even consulting him.
He might hate his father, but he doesn't hate the easiness and respect being his father's son brought him in some places. His father had made a choice for him. He has created this opportunity and now, he will make use of it. He would have tried to rise up the ranks himself, but he wouldn't last. The nepotism in the country wouldn't allow it.
"But what exactly would be useful about that man's body" Doyin asked. Zayyad looked at him and returned his face back to the road. "I understand that his cells are not like the normal human cells, but what use will that be?"
"So many. There are things I can't even begin saying now" Zayyad replied.
"So this case would go from a boy being killed by a weird animal to the research of the cells of a man"
"Is this anything new to you?" Zayyad asked Detective Doyin.
He is supposed to know. This is not the first time a case has been neglected for something more important. It has always happened. Everyone go after cases that interest them. The case that would pay off more. They care about justice also. But they would bring Justice to a case that would help them.
"Well, hopefully we are able to bring Justice to the dead boy, and understand this man's cells" Doyin said.
"Don't get cocky now! We are not both working on any case." Zayyad thought. It would be Jason or nothing. Jason would give him more prominence. He is popular being his father's son, but it would only help him more, if he could prove himself. It would be of great help if he could get away from the shackles his father had binded him.
Zayyad and Jason were just a minute drive away from the station when they saw people flooding towards the station. They were over fifty people shouting and protesting. Some were with placards and some were just shouting. There was the media too. Different media houses, especially AIT. Their drones are distinct.
They drove to a building near the station, and parked their cars. Both of them looked at each other. They shrugged and headed towards the station. They couldn't make out what the people were saying from far away. They walked towards them and heard the people protesting.
"Justice for Mrs. Dave and death to Clinton"
The chants were coming in at different angles. Some had "end police brutality" on their placards. Others had "police are not your friends" on theirs. It is a messy scene for someone who is used to the peace around the station. Zayyad and Doyin stayed back. They tried to mix in with the people. They wanted to know what exactly was wrong.
Doyin wondered what would have happened if he had been on Uniform and they saw him. They would have ganged up against him. He held Zayyad and both of them squeezed between the protesters.
It was hard getting through. Doyin had to keep his head up. He tiptoed just so he can see where he is going. He used his right hand to protect his face, and to make way from himself. He held Zayyad in his left hand. He pulled through the crowd.
Zayyad just bent down whie running through the line Doyin created. He wondered what had happened and how it got to this extent. He wanted to ask one of the protesters but Zayyad had dragged him along.
"It would be safer when we are in" Zayyad cried to him at the top of his voice.
"What if they decide to commit arson.? Even in a peaceful protest, we have the not peaceful ones who would try to create problems and assault at every little given chance." Zayyad thought.
"This is bad and scary" he lamented.
"Can't we just wait and let them go?" He asked Doyin but he didn't get any response. The cries of the protesters overshadowed his voice.
Doyin pulled through the crowd and got to the front. It was a police line made with wood. There were police officers lined up behind it, with their shields and baton. They warnes the protesters to stay back. And since they claimed it was a peaceful protest, there were some people spearheading the protest. They stood at the front and made sure the people do not cross the police line. They are the same set of people who determine the next chants.
"Stay back Sir!" One of the peooy who were at the forefront cried a warning at Doyin, as he got to the front. Zayyad raised his head and saw the police line before him.
"It's okay! Don't worry" Doyin replied him.
Doyin held Zayyad's arm. He made him bend down, and pushed him below the wood. The police across stood up. They came closer. Doyin crossed under the wooden line. Those at the protest forefront cried at him.
"Get back! You will be hurt!"
Doyin turned around, showed his badge.
"He is a damn cop!" They screamed.
The police who were with shields and baton, came forward. Zayyad and Doyin ran towards them too. The police covered Zayyad and Doyin. Both of them ran past the police and went into the station's compound. Doyin looked back and he saw the protesters pointing at him and cursing him.
"If they had the chance to get hold of us, I bet they will pass out their frustration on us" Zayyad told Doyin.
Zayyad and Doyin stopped running. Both of them walked into the station.
Doyin walked up to an officer
"What happened out there?" He asked
"Sir!" The officer saluted
"Can you please tell me what happened? Why are there protesters out there.?" Doyin asked again.
"Doyin! Good thing you are here." A fellow detective touched him from behind.
"Ade, what's wrong?"
"See, I have no clue except what some police officers who went to the crime scene told me." Ade answered. He dragged Doyin along him to his office.
"Doctor! I will see you later. Why don't you go and prepare." Doyin said to Zayyad. Zayyad knows right at that moment, their initial plan has been foiled by the protest happening. He hates the fact that today was the day these people decided to clamour against whatever it i that is happening.
"See! I heard there is this new officer who went to greet the family of that dead boy." Ade said to Zayyad.
"Tony?" Doyin asked
"Is that his name? Well, the officer went to console the parent. When he got to the house, he saw the mother nearly dead from poisoning. He tried helping her and the sister came in. The woman died and the officer was accused of being the killer" Ade explained to Doyin.
"So how did it get to the point of protest?"
"The husband or something came here and started making a scene. We promised to look at the matter and showed him that we already detained the officer." Ade explained. He stood up from where he was sitting. He looked out through his window.
"The man was actually drunk when he came in. But you see, the sister already mobilized some people and here they are." Ade concluded his explanation.
"I bet you just tried to summarize everything. There must be more to it." Doyin argued.
"Maybe there is, but that's all I know"
"Where is the officer that was involved"
"He is in a cell. He is still in shock. Yet to recover"
"I see. That must be his first time seeing a dead body or holding a dead one" Doyin said. He winced as he remembered the memory of his first encounter with a dead body. It's traumatizing holding a dead person or seeing someone die for the first time. But what's worst is the person being a friend or a loved one. It's not something that leaves easily. Doyin's first time of seeing a dead body was during the Kingpin's case. Ever since then, story of the dead, sort of traumatize him.
"What is the next step? What's the Lieutenant planning on doing?" Doyin asked.
"Well, since the media are out there, he wants to give a speech. Like a media conference or something"
"I see" Doyin answered. Doyin already has a clue of what has happened. He is not interested in what's happening. He needs to get back to Doctor Zayyad's office. The case of the dead boy and this man with the fast healing injuries is what he needs to be on. He needs to have gone deep into it before Jason wakes up. He needs to be on this case.
"Anyways, that's not why I wanted to see you" Ade interrupted Doyin's thought
"Really? What is it?"
"It's about this case. The dead boy case."
"Which dead boy?" Doyin feigned ignorance. He didn't look into Ade's face, but rather through the window. Ade came up to him. He sat on the edge of the table before Doyin.
"Don't act like you don't know. This boy that was killed by a mysterious animal. The son of this woman that Officer Clinton was accused of killing"
"Oh! Him? What's up with the case?" Doyin asked looking directly into Ade's face.
"We should be on the case. I heard Jason was supposed to be on it, but he got shot and is wounded." Ade said. He stopped. He looked at Doyin's unwelcoming face. The face that showed lack of interest.
"You know what I am saying. He was just recently on a case two months ago. That man is soaring higher than us"
"Well, I didn't think of it that way" Doyin replied.
"Come on man. Don't act like you don't know. With the way he is going, he will be posted to Adamawa soon. You know what awaits him at Adamawa? Luxury and power" Ade said.
"Man I understand your point. But I am not the one who will determine who is to be on a case. Listen man! I came to the station for a reason. We can talk later" Doyin pushed his chair further from Ade. He stood up and went to the door.
"Even if we were to get together on the job, and we solve it. Only one person can be allowed to be promoted to Adamawa from each state every two years. Which of us is it going to be?." Doyin asked
"We will get to a compromise" Ade answered
