Chapter 28 - Cat's out.
"And what did he say?"
Cara asked and Nicholas shrugged.
She say quietly next to him, nervous about what had transpired between them. She hope Nicholas had been careful in asking Alexander questions because Alexander was very smart and he could pick up a thing or two and connect the dots if he found Nicholas's questions strange.
"It looked like he was considering it. He was very moody after that."
Cara sighed. That wasn't going to be enough. Still.
"That's not going to be enough, but it's a start."
She said as she smiled at Nicholas.
They had found a way to see each other after the end of the day. Cara with trying to avoid Alexander and Nicholas just wanting to see her.
He knew that he had certainly upset Alexander with some of the things he had said but it was the truth and he couldn't afford to hold it in anymore.
"You are sure this place is safe?"
Cara asked as she looked around. It was the same hotel they had met to talk, only this time, they were in one of the hotel rooms. Cara had decided that Nicholas apartment might be unsafe for them since Alexander knew where it was.
She had suddenly became very sceptical these days, with all the things going on around, she was finding it harder and harder to keep up the facade.
They had to be more careful.
Nicholas raised an eyebrow.
"Well. We've been here before. Didn't you like it?"
"I did."
She said with a smile on her face.
"I had to lie to my friend Malory today. She knew I didn't sleep at home."
"I'm sorry."
Nicholas whispered as he held on to her fingers.
He too had left early, leaving Alexander with the rest of the groomsmen and claiming that he had an emergency.
Cara nodded.
"I just don't like lying. Especially to her. It makes me feel really bad."
Nicholas sighed.
"I know. She's your best friend and you shouldn't have to lie about us."
"Well. I don't have much of a choice. I don't know how'd she feel. About everything..."
"Are you afraid she'll judge you for it?"
Nicholas asked softly and Cara shrugged.
That was inevitable. Of course she'd judge her.
"Of course she would. I won't blame her for it."
Cara sighed and fell back on the bed, her fingers still entwined with Nicholas. He moved closer to her and pulled her towards his chest.
They laid there for minutes, Nicholas slowly stroking her hair while Cara laid on his hard chest. Slowly, she felt all her troubles dissipating with every moment that passed.
Slowly she raised her head to look at the brilliant blue eyes of Nicholas.
He smiled at her.
They inched closer to each other, Cara licking her lips and Nicholas's breathing faster and faster.
His lips met hers, slowly, softly at first almost as if he was testing the waters. Cara leaned in, wanting to get more of him. Nick tugged at her, pulling her closer to him, holding on to her waist gently.
Slowly they tugged at each other's clothes, Cara loosening the buttons of Nicholas's shirt and Nicholas dipping his hand underneath her blouse. His hands palmed her breasts and she moaned in pleasure.
Suddenly there was a sharp knock on the door, Cara pulled away quickly, her heart in her mouth, holding on to her disheveled blouse.
They glanced at each other.
"Room service!"
The voice shouted sharply.
Cara released a sigh.
That was close.
She looked away, checking her phone while Nicholas angrily walked to the door.
Her mother had called her, a dozen times. She rolled her eyes, it had something to do with Alexander, that she was sure of it.
"Jean?"
Nicholas said in shock and Cara turned to see Jean pushing Nicholas out of the way and walking towards them.
"I knew it."
She said with a smile on her face. Her blonde hair framed her face nicely and she was wearing regular jeans and a flowery shirt.
She turned to Nicholas and then Cara and shook her head.
"Oh you guys are in so much trouble now."
"Jean. Jean... It's not what you think..."
Nicholas started and Jean shrugged.
"I don't care. You two are in the same hotel room, that looks incriminating enough."
She turned to Cara and glared at her. the gloating was all over her face.
Cara's face burned in embarrassment. She was enjoying it! Their predicament, Jean was enjoying it.
"What do you want?"
Cara said as she composed herself, pulling her clothes together like nothing happened.
Jean raised her eyebrows.
"What do I want? The nerve of you!"
She scoffed.
"I can see why you were so defensive that last time. Of course you wanted the two brothers all to yourself. How selfish of you!"
"I can't believe it! I mean, you've always liked to act all high and mighty!"
Jean said as she mimicked Cara by walking around the room with her head high.
She started cackling like a witch.
She paused and then turned to Cara.
"I guess you're even worse than the rest of us."
"Jean. What do you want? Do you want money? I can pay you enough to keep quiet."
Nicholas said as calmly as he could but Jean's eyes widened.
"How could you even think so lowly of me! I've never been after your money."
Cara swallowed hardly. Her heart was thumping so loudly in her chest.
"What Nicholas is trying to say is that we're ready to do everything we can to buy your silence."
She said and Jean turned to her and scoffed.
"And what if I don't want to keep quiet? What if I want everyone to know?"
"Then you'll lose. You won't have any hold over us and you certainly won't be able to get anything out of me."
Nicholas said as he slowly buttoned up his shirt, his eyes were on Cara the entire time.
She looked so scared. Her hair tumbled all around her, her hazel eyes wide with fear and something that looked like anger. He looked down and found her fingers caught in her blouse. She was scared.
He had to do something.
Jean was quiet. She seemed to be considering her terms. She had been thinking of exposing the two of them, telling Alexander and letting the whole world know about the scandal that was brewing.
Sure, it would make a good juicy story, and it would ruin Cara's family and reputation, but she knew Nicholas would never forgive her if she did that.
And what good would that do her?
She wouldn't directly gain anything from Cara's downfall.
"So what do you say? What you saw here can stay between the three of us. It never gets out there and we're a happy and safe bunch. What do you say to that?"
He asked and Jean shrugged. She crossed her arms and pretended to be deep in thoughts.
"I honestly don't particularly care what happens if people find out."
Cara's breath hitched. It felt like her heart has sunk after hearing Jean's words. At that moment, she was ready to beg. Nicholas clenched his jaw angrily, but Jean still had more to say.
"But you're right. I don't get to benefit anything from that do I?"
Cara sighed in relief. Jean would not tell on them, but Cara also didn't like the mischievous glint in her eyes.
"No. You don't."
Nicholas answered and she nodded.
"Good. But I also want something in return."
Nicholas nodded.
He brought out his phone from his back pocket.
"How much do you want? I'll make it double."
He said and Jean shook her head.
"That's tempting but no. At least not now."
She said with a sly smile.
Cara was confused.
"Then what do you want?"
She asked and Jean turned to Nicholas and winked at him suggestively.
"I mean... What I've always wanted."
She said as she walked towards him slowly.
Nicholas took a small step back.
She couldn't possibly be serious. He was offering her money! And yet she wanted him?
"Jean..."
He warned but she ignored him.
"Jean just take the money. What's the meaning of this?"
"Money?"
She chuckled.
"Nicholas I've made it clear what I want. I want you and I don't want any argument about that. If you want me to keep my mouth shut then you'll just have to do as I say."
"That's ridiculous!"
Cara spat out in rage and Jean sharply turned to her.
"More ridiculous than you sleeping with your fiancé's brother just a few weeks to your wedding?!!"
She retorted and Cara slowly settled on the bed.
She suddenly had a pounding headache.
What the hell had she gotten herself into.
Nicholas's eyes searched Cara's face for answers, but she looked too disoriented to even talk.
"So what do you say? Do you want me to call Alexander or what?"
She said as she raised up her phone.
"Don't worry. He'll do it."
Cara said slowly and looked away.
Jean smiles widely.
"And you Nicholas. What about you?"
She asked and he shrugged.
"As long as you keep your mouth shut, we won't have any problems."
"Sealed."
Jean squealed in delight as she jumped to Nicholas. She enveloped him in a hug and he cringed.
"I think we should seal this deal with a kiss. What do you think?"
She asked and Nicholas shrugged.
"No. No. It's too soon."
Jean turned to Cara and cocked her head to the other side.
"Cara? What do you think?"
Jean asked.
Cara sighed and picked up her purse.
"You can kiss him all you want. He's all yours now."
She sighed.
Jean waited for no invitation, she pulled Nicholas towards her and kissed him.
Cara couldn't bear to watch them.
She stormed out of the room.
