Need of funds

Martina

I did not know what to give as answer to my mother. However, she had guessed the results were not good.

"Ma'anem, what's wrong?" She questioned me, laying a curious gaze on me. I remain silent not knowing what to answer. She takes back. "Tell me what is happening. These are the results you're holding right?" I nod my head.
"What did the doctor say? she asks me. I walk over and sit next to her on the bed.
"Mom..." I began with a weak voice. "He said we have to operate on you as soon as possible."
My mother became silent on hearing this and turns to the wall. We remain silent and no one dares to speak. I went out in order to take a little air and come back to find her in the same position. I sit on the bed and ask her to tell me where she had kept the money she saved from her trade. Once she told me the place, I quickly took the way back home As soon as I recovered this money, I mixed it with what I had saved and the whole thing did not reach 200 thousand CFA francs. We had taken a lot of that money in the last month. I needed at least 500 thousand for a start. I again went to see the Italian from the last time who had helped me. But unfortunately, he has traveled for his country and will not be able to return until after the Christmas holidays. That is to say in a month later. I was so disappointed, but I went home anyway. I took sheets and some things and took the road to Edéa. During the whole journey, I wept bitterly. Why was all this happening to us? What in God's name have we done to deserve this? Are we therefore not entitled to any moment of respite and peace? I arrived at the hospital and it was planned that we will go to Douala tomorrow.
The next day, I paid the bill for the two days spent in the hospital, the scanner, as well as the costs of the transfer to Douala. So we left in the afternoon and didn't take long to arrive. I only had 50,000 CFA francs left. We were admitted to a room at the Laquintinie Hospital in Douala. The next morning, I went to see the Director of the hospital for the financial arrangements.
"Sit down young lady!" He ordains me, showing me the seat.
"Thank you Doctor!" I say as I run.
"According to your mother's medical records, she needs to be operated on urgently." He said looking at me.
"Yes doctor."
"This will require a financial guarantee." the operation will cost 400 thousand, in addition to other treatments and medications that may be prescribed. Her case is very delicate and will require the intervention of an experienced specialist." He told me. Hearing this, I burst into tears. Where am I going to find such a sum my God!
"Is something wrong ma'am?" asks the manager.
"I don't have that amount." I only have 50 thousand left.
"You can go to your family and initiate a quest." He proposed to me.
"We no longer have anyone except our grandmother who only gave birth to my mother." I replied in tears.
"In that case, I can't do anything for you. These are the rules of the hospital and no one can go against. But I would advise you to hurry up, given your mother's harsh condition."

"Please doctor, can't we operate until I find a solution? I could even clean the hospital for years without pay if you want and the salary will be given as her care fees." I said in tears.
"Sorry Madam! Without money it is not possible. Many patients were treated and in the end did not pay. We can no longer take that risk." He replied rudely, without paying attention to my dismay.
I left that office very dejected. What am I going to do now ? What country are we in? Do we not have the right to health because we are poor? Yet health is one of the most basic human rights. I went out and sat on a bench in the hallway then I was crying a good deal. What else am I going to do? I think there's only one thing left for me to do now. I have no other choice. Even if I have to humble myself.
