Enter the Fairies
Since they had to meet the ship back at the city where they were dropped off, Sarah and Draven began travelling down the road back towards that port city. They reach the first rest stop before the sun sets, and after making camp quickly, they enter their tent, eager to be with one another as legal husband and wife. So involved with each other, they don't hear the soft whickering of the horses, nor the clip-clopping of another horse approaching.
The rider dismounts from her horse, her red hair braided down her back in a single braid as the wind blows around her gently. The band that covered her eyes keeps her from seeing what's around her, but the sounds that Draven and Sarah were making made it clear where their tent was. The heat from the fire lets her know where the bonfire was kept as well. She crosses to her horse and takes her tent off the saddle bags, putting it up quickly as she hunts in the forest for food.
She sits and eats her portion of the evening meal while waiting for Sarah and Draven to get done with their activities. Once they were finished their unexpected guest walks over and jostles the tent roughly. Sarah, not knowing who was moving their tent, quickly grabs her rapier and exits, ready to fight whoever was outside of the tent she shares with her new husband. Seeing that it was Rose, she places the tip of the rapier on the ground and pokes her head inside the tent.
"It's Rose, come on out and let's see what she wants."
Draven's face pales as he quickly gets dressed and exits the tent. He pales even further as he sees Rose standing with her hands on her hips, glaring at them both from behind her cloth band.
"Did you forget something Draven?" Her voice was cold and direct as she seems to focus her attention on Draven.
Draven, as he exited the tent and stands up, reaches up and scratches the back of his head, “Ah….yeah… uhhh…. Sorry Rose. I … didn’t mean to… forget my promise.”
Rose scoffs under her breath as she shakes her head. “Yeah, forgot. So glad that the woman you made promises to is so forgettable.”
Sarah frowns and looks between them before her gaze stayed on Draven. “You made promises to her?”
Draven looks at Sarah and looks sheepish as he nodded. “Yeah, I told her that when I came back I would take her with me if I left again.”
Sarah looked between them and frowned in confusion as she then looked at Rose. “Well I’m sure, given the fact that he remembered now that you reminded him, he would have remembered and sent for you if we had gotten too far away. Given the last couple of weeks, I’m sure you can understand why it slipped his mind.”
Rose shook her head, frustration written on her face. “A promise is a promise. It shouldn’t have mattered what was going on, he should have never forgot his words to me.”
Draven stepped between them, placing his hand out to Sarah. “Sarah, just let it go. You’re not one of us, you don’t know how things work in our village.”
Sarah’s eyes widened in shock as she felt the arrow of pain shoot through her heart. She was prepared to stand up for him, talk to Rose and try to explain how that mentality could lead to more misunderstandings than anything else. Seeing there was no desire for her to be there, she tosses her rapier to the side, not paying attention to where it landed as she stalked towards the woods. As soon as she reached the water, she waded into the current, changing her body into her mermaid form and swimming with the current as she looked for the pool she knew was just ahead.
Draven sighs and shakes his head, glancing once at Rose as he makes his way after his wife. He sees the faint silver of her tail fins as he follows her. His intent to talk to her, calm her down and convince her of his love. He had felt her hurt through their connection and knew what he had said had hurt her emotionally.
Rose sighs and shrugs as she crouches by the fire and places a small rabbit on a spit and begins cooking the meat. She hears some small fluttering and palms the small dagger she had placed inside her boot. Acting as if she did not hear anything, she continues to cook the meat, the fluttering continued to sound throughout the clearing. It sounded like several small animals were exploring the campsite and the thought of obtaining more meat so that it can be dried into jerky for the trip ahead caused her to slip from the fire and make several traps along the forest line to capture some of the animals that were aimlessly exploring.
“Do you think she sees us?”
“No. Look at her eyes. She wears a band over them. That means she can’t see. But sush, her hearing is probably very excellent.”
“That plant she had in her pouch was delicious. And you know that humans can’t hear us.”
“Did you see the standoff earlier? I couldn’t believe she had the guts to go against the grand-daughter of Calypso.”
She frowns as she hears the high, child-like voices of several different beings. Thinking that children had found their way into the camp, she tried to focus on the voices, but the directions of each voice seemed to change rapidly. Almost as if the children were running and talking at the same time. But she didn’t hear the footfalls of anything.
“Quiet you four. Just tidy up the camp for Sarah and we’ll leave.”
The old voice sounded as if there was an adult around, but as much as she tried to hear their footfalls, she found that the only sound besides their voices was the fluttering as well. Finally, it clicked. She smirks as she walks to her tent and withdrew several plants that she knew were favored by the tiny people.
“Did you see that?”
“Do you think she can hear us?”
“No one can hear us. Except maybe Sarah that is.”
