Chapter 22

-Please tell me we don’t have the night shift – said Aldahir showing up behind me as I was reading the schedules for today

-We don’t, remember we worked the night shift last week to get out of it this week – I answered him – I was checking who will be working it instead of us

-Okay, let’s go then, I want to catch one of those damn hunters for once – said Aldahir fixing his bulletproof vest

-We will, soon enough

Aldahir smiled at me, kissed me on the cheek and then we headed to the entrance of the forest. Aldahir had been on edge since he woke up that day because it was a full moon, se was stressed and worried beyond himself because he hadn’t had the chance to actually sit down and plan what we will do, he had been successful on the previous full moons because we used our prescheduled date nights to get outside of the province a little and go “camping” in a part of the forest that was pretty far away from the city.

That full moon was the first one we will spend in the little section of forest in Pickering near the city, which put us in far more risk of being seen or heard by someone, Aldahir knew it and he couldn’t stop thinking about it, which made him nervous and he was very close to loosing his temper a few times. That was normal – kind of – because the effects of the full moon could be felt during the day before it even went up into the night sky, especially if we were nervous or dreading the full moon itself, so it really affected Aldahir.

We spent the whole day going around the forest, we caught one guy that had been there the day before and he went back to try and take the hunt he had left hidden deep in the forest, he tried to trick us into making us think he wasn’t the one who had been there before, his attempt to trick us didn’t work because not only die we recognized his smell, which was a surprisingly strong and weir combination of wooden based cologne, one of those awful mostly chemical deodorants and – somehow – sweet, we also found two deer completely torn apart hidden under a huge layer of leaves and next to the deer there were the knifes the person had used on the animals.

We were able to pick up the scent from the knifes and we knew we could also use them to pick up some finger prints, with all that information we arrested the guy, who kept going on and on about us having the wrong guy, we brought him to the station, handed over our evidence, filled the reports and got ready to head back to the forest.

-Stupid little girl! – Yelled out the guy from the cell as we were walking by

I barely had any time to jump in front of Aldahir and stop him from going after the guy, Aldahir growled at him – a little louder than he should have – and the guy clearly heard him, which seemed to scare him so I pulled Aldahir away from him and dug my claws on his arm as we walked outside of the station, I didn’t let go of him until we were pretty far away from the station and by that point Aldahir’s blood was dripping down his hand.

-Calm down please – I whispered to him

Aldahir growled at me trying to push me away, so I stared back at him and stepped closer to him, this made Aldahir sigh heavily but he started to calm down and walk around to shake off some of the anger he had.

-I’m fine, I’m sorry – said Aldahir grabbing me by the shoulders

-Okay… I know this whole thing is because of the full moon but you can control yourself better than this – I said walking away from him

-Hey, I’m sorry, okay? – He said walking next to me – but you really expect me to stay quiet and calm when an idiot like that goes after you?

-Do I need someone to come to my rescue? – I asked him

-What?

-Did I need you to jump to my defense when that guy talked to me?

-I guess not, he wouldn’t even had been able to touch you

-Yes, but even if he had been able to touch me I could have killed him if I wanted, and you know it

-Don’t expect me to stop defending you

-I’m not asking you to do that, but you can do it during the full moon, if something happens you will transform into a wolf in the middle of a city where a heck of a lot of people would see you and immediately try to kill you

Aldahir looked at me nodding, accepting and understanding what I was saying.

-We’re not in Loup Ville anymore, we can’t just growl at people when we get mad and transform into wolves to jump at them, we need to be extra careful

-Noted boss

I laughed at what he said and punched him, he laughed back and we went back to the forest.

When the night finally arrived we got our things ready and headed to the forest, we had decided to get deep into the forest getting as far away from the people as we could and once there Aldahir transformed into a wolf under the influence of the full moon, I did the same after hiding away our things and I joined him.

Since we had been working on this forest for a while we knew the place fairly well so we walked around trying to avoid the coyotes hide out, because there’s nothing nastier than having to fight a coyote that does nothing but sink their sharp little teeth into your face. We decided to hang around a little pond that was very deep into the forest and we ended up running into a small pack of wolves that lived there, since we were not part of said pack they saw us as a threat and the bigger wolf – the alpha – came up to us growling and asking us, in a pretty violent way, to get the hell away from their forest.

Aldahir and I caught the message and left them alone managing to avoid getting attack, but after about ten minutes of our encounter with the wolves we heard footsteps, like four or five people walking together, a few minutes later we heard them talking with each other.

-We have to stay away from the east side, that’s were the coyotes are – said a male voice

-Can’t we kill some of them? – Asked a female voice

-We only kill those if they attack us, their fur is too rough – answered another female voice

-We’re looking for wolves – said the same male voice

Aldahir and I looked at each other concerned and I contemplating the possibility of going back to the pack of wolves and somehow warm them about the hunters, Aldahir seemed to read my mind because he physically stopped me from heading back, I growled at him and tried to bite him, he responded by actually biting my ear and pulling my head forcing me to look in the direction of the voices, when he let go of me I realized the hunters were a little to close to us, that made me nervous so I tried to stay as quiet as I could and hoped they hunter would just walk past us.

When the hunters were directly over us as we were partially under a fallen tree we saw a coyote run by, that caught the attention of the hunters and when they turned around one of them saw us.

-Wolves! – Yelled out the female hunter and immediately after opened fire towards us

The bullets went into the fallen tree and we managed to scape from her and started running away from the hunters.
