Chapter 16
LUIS:
The whole atmosphere gets awkward soon after I push the door open that gives me entrance into the spacious office. And it only becomes that way when my eyes land on the one I came here for. To be precise, it was when both of our eyes make contact with each other.
I try as much as possible to maintain a neutral expression while shutting the door close from behind me. I take a quick scan of the office, the creamy walls with the touch of black shooting back at me. Even the curtains were the same as the walls. But what stood out in the office was the red hair on her. Yes, her. Alpha Soma, actually. And I was here to see her.
There was something about her expression, though. She seemed bothered. More like she has a problem. And it only took me a moment to discover the reason for her supposed agitation.
Someone else other than the two of us was in the room. Don’t know why it initially took me a while to figure that out, but at least I could tell already that the person is my kind. And a lady too. All came from the scent.
Should I call my movement the wrong timing? Why did I have to arrive here when Alpha Soma decided to meet with someone else? It is pretty obvious that she is not comfortable that I am here at the same time as the other person she is receiving at the moment.
I still have my gaze set on the Alpha when the receiving chair twirls, causing the face of the person sitting on it to be revealed. A lady, just as expected, who starts to stare at me with a sort of familiarity.
The lady looks so much like Alpha Soma that I can bet on them being siblings. I can’t even tell who is older if they are indeed siblings because she looks just as young as the Alpha. The most notable difference between them was the hair colors. And their structures if that can be added.
“Uhm, hi Luis,” Alpha Soma says, clearing the silence between all of us.
“Good day to you, Alpha Soma,” I respond without adding any emotion, not even bothered that I added Alpha Soma’s title from the opposite territory.
My hands were intertwined behind my back as I awaited something from Alpha Soma. She seems undecided, her expression telling that she is struggling to come up with something to say. Well, I can wait.
“Cassie?” it was only when she said that did her supposed sister twirls the chair to face her again, giving me the relief of being stared at uncannily.
“Yes?” I hear the strange lady say.
“Meet Luis. He’s from the Dark Moon pack but will be working with me on something,” Alpha Soma tells her. At least she gave me a description that is better than being called a business partner. Besides, I don’t think there’s a way around that. “And Luis,” calling me brings my attention back to her, “meet my sister, Cassandra.”
Guess my intuition about them being siblings wasn’t wrong after all. But the sister does the chair twirling again to stare at me. But this time, it was different. Why? Because she starts to assess me even though it is a direct once-over.
I look in the direction of Alpha Soma again and she still seems uncomfortable. But she nods in my direction, which I will call a type of assurance.
“I see,” her sister utters before standing up to her feet. “I'll let you guys be. See you later, sis.”
“Yeah, see you.” was the almost forced response from Alpha Soma.
“And it was nice meeting you, Mr. Luis,” her sister says when she gets to my side in a bid to get out of the office.
“It’s just Luis, Miss,” I tell her, nodding at the same time.
“Hmph,” she hums and then handles the door. The opening and closing it affirmed that she was now out of the office, leaving me alone with Alpha Soma.
A sigh of relief escapes from the direction of the alpha. Definitely one to show that she felt better now that the pressure attached to her sister being in here was gone. If that even makes sense.
I then walk over to the same place that the sister just stood up from. As I have not received a go-ahead, I simply stand behind the seat, looking at the Alpha who was now a different breed from the person that had been extremely bothered a while back.
“Take a seat, please,” she tells me and I waste no time in doing as told, adjusting my corporate shirt in the process. When my body makes contact with the warmth of the seat, I knew I really needed the treat of getting somewhere to sit for a long time now.
I proceed to say, “Thank you.”
“So, did you have any difficulty getting here?” was the first question thrown at me.
“No, I didn’t. Already had an idea about the location. However I was quick to observe that the receptionists and your secretary gave me an easy entrance into your office,”
“Yeah,” she leans back on the seat she is on. “I gave them instructions to let you in without issues whenever you come around. But I forgot that it was going to be today so I am unprepared. A reason why everything does not seem to be in place for me. Hope you don’t mind?”
I shake my head. “No, I don’t. It’s all good,”
And that commenced a round of awkward silence between us. I don’t know but this feels like a first-time date between two people. And unfortunately, I have been caught in the middle of such a situation.
I try to hold in my nervous state from being revealed even though I could feel beads of sweat trickling down my skin. This has got to be the most uncomfortable situation I have found myself in.
“Do you want us to talk about what I told you the other day?” Alpha Soma suddenly says, looking like she does not want to have anything to do with the current issue.
“We could because there will be something you will have to hear much later.”
“Perhaps you should go straight to what you have to say.”
“No, not yet. Because I still need to understand what you were telling me before I can affirm what I think it should be.” I admit to her. Then I add, “You mentioned the possibility of me being your mate but neither of us knows if that is true,”
“With the way you put it, it seems there's something big going on here that you don’t want to tell me. Are you experiencing the same thing but choose not to admit that you are?”
“I’m not. I’m truly not.”
“I don’t believe you,” she suddenly declares and I’m forced to reveal a slight change of expression.
“Why?”
“Because you have not been truthful since day one,” she says, frowning already at me. “Take for one, were you or were you not at the clubhouse over a week ago?”
Now she has got me in a position I never like to be in. Seems I’ve been building a type of mistrust agenda without knowing that I’ve been doing that.
“I was,” I willingly say because I see no reason to tell her the opposite again.
“Then why did you tell me you weren’t there when I confronted you about it the first time?”
“I had to run off. I was running late back to my territory.”
“And why did it have to be when I was approaching you that you realized you had to run off? Tell me the truth. I know you can feel the same pull just as I am,”
“I can’t feel anything. And I'm telling the truth.”
“Stop with the lies, Luis. You can’t tell me it’s a one-sided thing. Or are you not a wolfling like everyone else in the werewolf territory?”
It was starting to get somewhat heated. Why does she think I would be lying? Yeah, I lied about the club thingy then but would I tell her a lie about an issue as huge as this?
“Perhaps I feel something, but it’s complicated.” I have to tell her so it would put us on the same page but my wordings had something deeper.
“The only complicated thing here is you not admitting to what you feel. And me not having a definite understanding of what I feel could be another,”
I sigh in frustration because there was no way I am going to convince her by beating about the bush. Maybe it was time I said what I have in mind.
“Alpha Soma—”
She cuts me off. “Soma.”
“You know what? I’m just going to say it then,” and then I take in a deep breath, exuding the air out immediately. “Want to know why all these seem so complicated? It’s because I have no spirit wolf.”
