54| Most packs are more powerful than the Greymoon pack

Maggie's POV

Emaus had lost his relaxed state, and it was all because he wasn't getting the better answer from me. The better answer was what mattered to him, and for the first time since he came to visit, he stopped eating to focus on the conversation we were having. Other times, he continued eating as though a discussion was not going on.
“Had she refused to see me?” He asked.
“She probably will.”
Aaron had for some reasons I didn't know of, behaved as though nothing concerned him, but what I said made him fall back in line. I noticed he shook his head.
“She had given me instructions, and I plan to follow them even if it means causing issues for anyone.”
“You have something else in mind, and what you are saying is not simply because Kate would refuse seeing me.”
How could he say that? He was making me look like a villain before Aaron.
“Maggie,” Aaron called. “Could you come with me for a moment?”
I followed him to our room, without a clue of what he wanted to tell me.
We sat on the bed, and he took him some minutes that felt like hours before he started speaking.
“We might be going too far with everything.”
“In what way do you think we are going too far?” My voice wasn't in the usual tone I had always used to speak to him.
It was exactly the same tone I used in speaking to Emaus. Slightly rude.
“The way you try to convey your thoughts to him isn't quite necessary.”
It was then I realized I was close to blowing up to Emaus, in what way had he upset me? I could not really point it out. All I took note of was my displeasure.
“Emaus is simply making a request.”
“Is that what you feel?”
“Yes. You should not start an argument with him. Don't make it obvious that you don't trust him.”
I laid flat on the bed, forgetting I had a meal to finish up. Aaron had succeeded in getting his advice into my head. It was meaningful.
I heaved a sigh. “Leah is not okay with him.”
“That's why she is still growing up. She wouldn't get it now, but later she will come to understand.”
He stared at the door for a while that suggested he was suspicious of someone trying to listen to our conversation.
He got close to my left ear. “Emaus might be more powerful than us, and we have to tread carefully.”
That was the same thought I was also having, but I had refused to voice it out to him. I hate the feeling of weakness. I had also tried to deceive myself that we were on par with his pack, but no, we weren't. If Aaron had used the word “is" instead of “might be", I would have still accepted it.
“We might start living in fear if we make him feel big to us.”
“I know, but he hasn't made a bad request by asking to see your mother.”
“Maybe I'm simply allowing my emotions to get the best of me.”
We returned to the sitting room, and Emaus had not continued eating. That was when I knew the extent of how important it was for him to see Kate.
“I will have to inform her beforehand.”
He nodded slowly before speaking. “Please make her accept to see me.”
It was only then he continued eating in the usual way he always did.
“Concerning Leah,” he said. “I had heard the gist from a man called Sagio, and he seems to know many things about your pack.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Who is Sagio?”
“A member of the Crescent pack, he told me Grimes has inquired of him about Leah.”
Leah had been pretending not to hear us speaking, but when her name was mentioned, she became fully attentive.
“Do you by any chance know him?”
Of course not, how were we supposed to know someone from a different pack?
“No, we don't! I have never heard of him.”
“He told me that Grimes had threatened to take his life, and he had no other choice but to run away.”
He was trying to make us know how deadly Grimes could be, indirectly hinting for Leah to stay away from him.
“Grimes is much more powerful than you.”
That sucked. He was telling me about my weakness in such a way I couldn't come up with an argument. His companions sneaking into our pack without our knowing was already a sign that we could not stand firm against most packs.
“I just wanted to help out in the best way I can.”
But his best bet was against Leah's.
“What are you trying to protect us from?” She asked.
“Grimes might actually go out of patience, and you wouldn't like him in that state. None of you will.”
“He is full of care, and I am sure that he will come to terms with us.”
Emaus laughed dryly. “Have you told him why you are keeping your distance from him?”
“Because I can't tell him that.”
“Do you think it's normal that he has been patient all this while? His mistress and other women he has might be giving him enough pleasure.”
Leah's eyes were filling up, but she was using her hand to clean it off. I left where I was sitting to stay close to her.
“I was planning for him to pay her a visit,” I said.
“You think that would help out?”
“I want her to converse with him. She needs to know things about him.” I made an effort to make him believe me.
“I know a lot about Grimes, and he has never been a gentle person.”
“Enough of your talks. We won't rush into any conclusions.”
The fact that they were mates made it absurd for her to completely avoid him without seeing much of him. Emaus might tag us as foolish people, but the mate bond wasn't decided by any of us.
“I have seen him transform into a wolf. There is a reason why he became the alpha.”
Emaus wanted us to go with his plan.
