59| Maggie's pretense

Leah's POV

"How did it go?" Maggie asked me.
Grimes had just left, but she had not waited for a small amount of time to pass before asking me about my meeting with him. My mood was still not okay, and I was trying to control myself.
"How did it go?" She asked again.
Emaus was still there. The way he had looked at Grimes was discomforting. No one needed to tell me, not even Grimes. It was all about a grudge, and it couldn't be anything else. I was not okay with Maggie asking me something so sensitive in his presence, but she seemed not to understand that I was trying to avoid the topic till we were alone.
"We should talk later." I walked out from their midst.
Was that rude? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. My mood could have affected the way in which I walked out on them. Where was Euphoria? She had caused a tear and break to the way I felt, and I needed to address it.
I walked to the room of the maids to look for her, but she wasn't there. I decided to depress my emotions a little by going to my room. Octavier was on my bed. She had been in my room since the time Grimes gave her that look.
"He's gone?" She stood up to ask.
"Yeah."
Her face went back to the same way it was when she told me about her one night stand with Grimes. I could not tell if he remembered, the way he looked at her sparked up the possibility that he knew. I could not ask him about it.
"What happened?"
The look on my face gave her a meaning of some sort.
"Where is Euphoria?"
She had formed a suspicion in her mind just because I mentioned "Euphoria". She had no trust for her, and the awful look in my face gave her such thought.
"She did something?"
"She kept coming to disturb the sweet moment Grimes and I were having."
She sat on the bed, waiting for me to express the way I felt. I sat beside her, but was not speaking. So many questions would have been in her head, which included her one night stand with Grimes. Of course she wanted to ask if he had told me anything concerning that.
"He didn't talk about you."
"He wouldn't tell you. It might just be in his mind."
"I would look for a way to find out."
As though Euphoria knew I was looking for her, she came to my room.
I was going to explode, but I found out that I was holding myself back.
"I can explain to you."
She knew what she had done, and was not ignorant of it.
"Is there an explanation for it?" I narrowed my eyes on her.
What was she going to explain when the deed had already been done? But why would she do that to me if she claimed to be my friend?
"It was Maggie's instruction."
Maggie's instruction? That blew my mind off.
"Did she ask you to do all that?"
Octavier had no hint of what we were talking about. She was left in the dark.
"She does not want any show of affection till she confirms he's not who she thinks he is."
The revelation felt like nails piercing into my ears. Maggie had suggested for me to spend time with him so I could know if he was of any harm to me, never would I have known that she was still holding back.
"You are sure Maggie had that in mind?"
"Yes, she was watching, and whenever you got close to kissing him, or a little romance, she made me cause a break."
Despite the pain I felt, it was a relief that I hadn't rushed to serve mean words to Euphoria. Maggie was my guest. Her action pointed to the fact that she was pretending to accept Grimes as a visitor.
I placed my right hand on Octavier's thighs. "Maggie is not okay with my being around Grimes "
Euphoria came in, shaking her head, and disregarding what I had said. "Maggie is not against you being with him."
"Then why would she do that?"
"She was trying to be careful."
Why was Euphoria trying to support her? They never had a close relationship.
"That's not a way to be careful! She would have told him directly, instead of using tricks. I'm beginning to lose trust in her."
"It isn't up to that," Octavier said.
I took a lying position on the bed, facing the wall, not looking at them. I was simply trying to find relief.
I stayed in that position for a while, but Euphoria and Octavier did not leave.
"I'm sorry that I had to obey her orders."
Even though she hadn't done anything wrong. The main culprit was not with us, and of course the main culprit was Maggie.
Maggie opened the door, and Euphoria and Octavier immediately left the room. She sat on the bed, and I got closer to the wall, avoiding her touch.
"I would love to sleep, I'm so tired."
"How was your conversation with him?"
I ignored her, but she was still waiting for me to speak.
"You are going too far!" I screamed. "Why would you do that?"
"What are you talking about?"
She wanted to pretend that she had no idea of what I was saying.
"Can you tell me you don't know?"
She kept quiet, probably thinking of what to tell me.
It got tense between us as I was slowly losing my trust in her.
"You asked him to come, then why the restraint?"
She bent her head down a bit, not meeting eyes with me. I had every right to accuse her for doing something so low. It would have been better if she had made it clear that I should maintain distance and not get too close with him, but she took the part of playing weird games.
"You wouldn't understand."
What was there for me to understand?
"You are supposed to study him, and not get intimate with him!" She fired back at me.
I froze, and my mouth sealed up.
