Chapter 18
In Isabella's perspective:
"There's definitely someone over there." I was certain; I had just heard a noise from behind the clothes rack.
I made my way towards Lucas's clothing rack, planning to seize the chance to search through his clothes.
If I could find something, my father's position in the Bennett family would be secure.
"Stay away." I was about to approach Lucas's clothes when I suddenly heard his somber voice. "There's no one else in my room."
His expression was terrifying. I suddenly didn't dare to move forward and had to give up.
"It doesn't matter." I reluctantly withdrew my hand, crossed my arms, and looked at Lucas. "You should seriously consider my proposal. Or sooner or later, the entire family will blame you." After saying that, I immediately left the ward.
I didn't think there would be anyone else in Lucas's room. After all, Lucas had always followed the rules and was a decent person.
"Lucas is useless. How could he manage to keep the Bennett family going up to this point?" I muttered in confusion and then looked back.
How could someone as spineless as Lucas be the head of the Bennett family? Once Gabriel passed away, he probably would be driven away.
Anyway, I'd completed the task my father assigned me. Whatever happened to him was none of my concern.
"What about my father's matters? How are you handling them?" After leaving the hospital, I immediately called Alexander.
"I'm working on it." Alexander's tone became somewhat impatient. "The transportation of that stuff is very."
"You should know how important those pills are to my father. These high-purity goods are very rare." I lowered my voice. "We just want to use the channels of the Cole family. Is that so difficult?"
"I know." Alexander's voice, on the other end, became increasingly vague and perfunctory.
I really didn't know what he was thinking.
"Alexander, are you hiding something from me?" I suddenly felt that something was off.
Alexander had always loved me dearly and never refused my requests. But what was wrong with him today?
Not just today—ever since we ran into Scarlett in class a few days ago, he'd been acting strange.
"After we saw Scarlett in the classroom, you said you suddenly had a headache," I couldn't help but question Alexander, "Why have you suddenly become so cold since then?"
Alexander was silent on the other end of the line.
I was furious. He clearly has the power to outshine Lucas, yet he willingly allows Lucas to take advantage of him.
"Is it because you've been hit by Lucas a few times that you're planning to stay down forever and be a spineless wimp?" I couldn't help but question Alexander, and I heard a few bitter laughs in response.
"Why do you think so?" Alexander immediately retorted. Judging by his tone, he didn't seem to be that weak.
Having been with Alexander for so long, I knew exactly what kind of person he was.
But why had Alexander suddenly become like this?
"Then why won't you tell me what's really going on?" I continued to press him, but Alexander suddenly cut me off.
"I'm a bit confused." Alexander finally started to tell me what had been happening lately. "I've been having some strange memories pop into my head recently."
Strange memories? What did he mean by that? Had he remembered something?
"Sorry." Alexander's hesitant tone made me inexplicably nervous. "These memories are all about Scarlett."
I didn't want to hear that name. Why couldn't she just disappear?
Had Alexander remembered the past? Had he remembered his story with Scarlett?
It was impossible. The doctor said that Alexander's memory was severely damaged and almost impossible to recover. How could he regain his memory just because of a sudden headache?
I didn't believe it.
"Are you rekindling old feelings for Scarlett?" I immediately questioned him, "Are you falling for Scarlett?"
"I never said that." Alexander's attitude turned increasingly hostile. He seemed very unwilling to talk about Scarlett.
"Then what do you mean? I hope you haven't forgotten what you did to Scarlett!" I warned Alexander viciously, "She won't develop feelings for someone who hurt her."
Alexander didn't say anything more. I only heard heavy breathing on the other end of the line. Then, Alexander hung up the phone.
Alexander didn't say anything. How infuriating!
I was not stupid. I could see that Lucas didn't want to see me.
Now even Alexander dared to hang up on me.
I felt like dragging Scarlett out and giving her a good beating. But I held back.
After all, Alexander went after Scarlett last time and Lucas retaliated.
"Damn it!" I was so angry that I kicked a stone on the roadside, almost twisting my ankle.
Why was my luck so bad? It was so frustrating!
"Miss, you're back." When I got home, the maid immediately came up to me and respectfully handed me the clothes for change.
"What kind of rag is this? Go get me another one right now!" I looked at the maid, still feeling uncomfortable. Recent events flashed through my mind.
I kicked the maid hard and felt a bit better.
"Yes, Miss." The maid didn't resist and just lowered her head and left.
"Why are you so angry? Did something happen?" Suddenly, I heard a commanding voice.
"Grandpa Gabriel?" I could hardly believe my eyes.
Gabriel was here! It was not easy to meet him!
Lucas was actually just a puppet; the real person in control of the Bennett family was Gabriel.
I was startled and immediately shrank back.
Everyone in the Bennett family knew that Gabriel was notoriously ruthless, and his mood was unpredictable.
Facing him, how could I dare to speak recklessly?
"It's okay. You can tell me what happened." Gabriel was just sitting on the sofa drinking water, but the strong sense of oppression made it hard for me to breathe.
"I..." I gritted my teeth and puffed out my chest. "It's all because of Scarlett!"
I steeled myself and pushed all the blame onto Scarlett.
"That lowly trash, she's just a whore from the slums!" I angrily belittled Scarlett, making her sound worthless. "She seduced my boyfriend, causing him to be so cold to me!"
"Anything else?" Gabriel's eyes narrowed into slits.
"Of course. Even Lucas takes care of her!" I immediately told Gabriel everything I had seen. "I went to see him, and he said I was not as good as Scarlett."
After saying all this, I clearly felt Gabriel's displeasure. The air around him was filled with a chilling aura.
"So that's how it is." Gabriel lightly tapped his cane and slowly stood up. "Lucas has been so disobedient lately, and it's because of Scarlett."
