Chapter 28

In Scarlett's Perspective:

I never imagined I would get the chance to apply for a trial position at "Gateway of Justice"!

"Is this really for me?" I couldn't believe my luck. The internship at this consultancy was known for its high standards, making it incredibly challenging to pass their trial application process.

This was the opportunity I had been waiting for. Every legal practitioner knew how good this consultancy was.

I was tempted by this application.

"Forget it." Despite the initial excitement, I still intended to reject the trial application.

"Why?" Lucas was somewhat surprised.

"You know, this consultancy is located on the other side of the country." I felt a bit helpless. "It's too far."

"I support you. If you want to go, I'll help you arrange the trip." Lucas had always been like this; he never opposed any of my decisions.

"And you must realize, this opportunity is rare. Missing it may make it challenging to secure another chance to work with such a reputable legal consultancy." Lucas held a sandwich, pondering for a moment, and said.

It made sense. This opportunity was indeed too rare for me.

I once pointed at Alexander's nose in the classroom, saying I would use the law to punish him.

Deep down, I knew I was just a college student without the means to hold Alexander accountable even if he had committed a crime.

But if I went to "Gateway of Justice" for training, I could potentially become a qualified judge and have the ability to influence this situation.

"Let me think about it." I lowered my head, eating my bread in a conflicted state.

"Take your time. Today is Olivia's funeral. Emily is waiting for us at the door." Lucas finished his meal, hurriedly put on his coat, and walked out.

I followed him outside.

Emily appeared uncertain about the situation, gazing ahead with her big eyes. Due to her autism and Olivia's busy schedule, Emily seldom ventured outside. She displayed a hint of curiosity about the outside world, quietly resting against the car window and observing the passing scenery.

At Olivia's memorial service, it was drizzling. Lucas held a large black umbrella, casting a shadow over Emily and me.

The atmosphere here was oppressive and somber.

Olivia's favorite photo was hung in front of her tombstone, surrounded by many flowers.

"Olivia was such a kind person, yet she was killed by those unreasonable Mafia!" The attendees at the memorial were Olivia's neighbors and friends, all of whom knew Olivia would never extort Alexander. However, the Cole family's words were accepted by the public, diminishing the significance of Olivia's death.

"I know, it's such a pity!" Olivia's neighbors from the slums all attended her memorial. "I heard that bastard recently got into a car accident. It's karma."

As they continued their conversation, I suddenly froze.

Did Alexander get in a car accident?

"I heard Alexander got into a car accident," Lucas mentioned Alexander as well, "What do you think about it?"

"I have no feelings for Alexander anymore."Shaking my head, I recalled Olivia's smile and said. "I only harbor hatred towards him."

Thinking about all this, tears welled up in my eyes. Olivia was like family to me, and the pain of her death was still raw. However, I had to remain strong for Emily, who relied on my care.

I needed to make Alexander realize that justice would always prevail and that he would face the consequences of his actions.

"I will definitely avenge Olivia." I clenched my fist, but my hand still trembled uncontrollably.

I wiped my tears and suddenly felt someone pulling me.

I looked down and saw Emily tugging at my clothes, mumbling something. I squatted down to hear her better.

"Don't cry," Emily spoke slowly and softly.

But she had never said such words outside before.

Emily was comforting me! I was both surprised and touched, hugging Emily as I choked up again.

It was beyond my imagination that an autistic child would offer me comfort. Emily must have exerted significant effort and determination to achieve this remarkable feat.

"You're such a good girl," I gently encouraged her, kissing her cheek, "Olivia would be proud of you."

Emily looked at me, then slowly nodded and said, "Mom."

I was so grateful that Emily and Lucas were by my side. Otherwise, I wouldn't even know how to cope with everything now.

I covered my face, squatting on the ground until I calmed down. Then, Lucas, Emily, and I held hands as we walked to Olivia's grave. We stood there for a long time.

Emily appeared to comprehend what was happening, her eyes reflecting sadness. She gazed at the photo on the grave for a moment, then gently removed the white flower she was wearing and placed it in front of the grave.

"Mom." Emily touched the tombstone with her small hand and said.

I couldn't hold back my tears anymore, sobbing on Lucas's shoulder.

"Why is this world so unfair to them?" I asked Lucas, but he didn't respond, just gently patting my back.

"Let's go back, Emily." I wiped away my tears and smiled at Emily.

The memorial concluded, and we departed the rain-soaked grassland. The wet road caused the car to slip, prompting Lucas to drive cautiously and slowly.

"There's a car following us." Lucas suddenly accelerated, his expression becoming serious. "Hold on tight."

I tightly held Emily's hand, attempting to reassure her as the car continued to pursue us closely. As we navigated the narrow road, the car accelerated on a curve, prompting Lucas to brake abruptly.

"What do you want?" Lucas was about to get out of the car to confront the person but saw that the man in the car was Alexander.

"I'm here to see Scarlett." Alexander rushed to me, not even glancing at Lucas.

He was covered in injuries, with bandages on his face.

"What do you mean by this?" I instinctively held Emily tighter.

"I'm here to apologize." Alexander's tone was humble, looking somewhat pitiful. "I'm sorry. I was wrong to believe Isabella."

"I've always loved you; I just lost my memory," he tried to explain, "My memory is back. We can be like we used to be!"

Then Alexander tried to open the car door to hug me.

I didn't respond; I just immediately locked the door.

"I forgot many things, which made me do so many things that hurt you." Alexander seemed about to cry.

"We were so in love." He gasped for air, his voice choking. "I am willing to accept any punishment. Let me atone for Olivia's death, as long as you can forgive me."

Alexander spoke passionately and sincerely, and there was a moment when I felt myself soften.
