Chapter 25
In Scarlett's Perspective:
I looked at the message, my hands trembling uncontrollably. I was angry more than when I found out that Alexander accidentally caused Olivia's death.
Alexander had already done something wrong, and now he was shirking responsibility.
Does Olivia's death mean nothing?
"Emily, I need to go out for a bit. You stay home and wait for me." After Emily woke up, I prepared her breakfast and drawing board before leaving for school.
I took a few days off from school because I had to attend Olivia's funeral and take care of Emily.
But I never expected Alexander to go this far.
"Alexander! Why are you saying that?" I stormed into the school and burst into Alexander's classroom.
He was still in class, and the teacher and students all turned to look at me.
"Do lives in your eyes are so meaningless?" I pointed to the news on my phone and loudly questioned Alexander.
The classroom immediately erupted in chatter, with many people whispering and the teacher stopping the lesson to look over.
Alexander's face showed guilt, but he remained silent.
"Do you have nothing to say about Olivia's death?" Seeing him not respond, I held up my phone again to question him.
"What should I say? I've already responded and compensated her," Alexander frowned, finally speaking after a long pause, "What more do you want from me? Can I bring her back to life?"
I couldn't believe that Alexander cared so little about all this.
"Do you have no remorse at all? Don't you plan to reveal the truth to everyone?" I continued to press him, but Alexander's expression only grew more twisted.
"Scarlett, calm down." He said, trying to pull me out of the room. "This is a classroom; don't disrupt others' learning."
Alexander grabbed my wrist, trying to lead me out. But I shook his hand off immediately.
"You're still thinking about hush things up with the money, right?" I pointed at Alexander. "For someone like you to study law is an insult to the law! I will use what I've learned to put you in jail!"
With that, I left the classroom.
Emily was still waiting for me; I didn't have time to waste on Alexander.
Originally, I came to school to confront Alexander face-to-face. He twisted the facts in front of the media and only evaded in front of me.
I couldn't believe that someone like Alexander could uphold his principles. Mafia like him had no right to talk about the law.
He caused Olivia's death this time; it will be someone else next time.
"Scarlett, the video of you confronting Alexander has gone viral!" Not long after I got home, my classmates sent messages encouraging me.
Curiously, I opened the video and saw myself angrily pointing and yelling at Alexander.
Although my feelings were hard to describe, at least the video helped more people stand up.
"Great job, Emily." I sat beside Emily, watching her hold a crayon, feeling a mix of emotions.
She nodded at me and continued drawing. Emily no longer cried often and was emotionally stable. But sometimes at night, she would still cry softly in her sleep, calling out "Mom."
These days, Emily would curl up under the blanket when she slept. I knew she couldn't express it well, but Emily was definitely aware of what happened.
All I could do was try to make her life a bit easier.
Once Emily's situation stabilized, I returned to school. To my surprise, I had become a sensation in just a few days.
Many people talked about me when they saw me, and some even gave me gifts.
"Scarlett, you're amazing!" As soon as class ended, my classmates surrounded me.
"We all support you!" They were more excited than I was for some reason.
I declined their kindness and focused on investigating evidence of Alexander's accidental injury.
After much effort, I found the bus driver.
"I'd like to know the specifics of the recent accident." I knocked on his door, hoping to learn about the accident, but he immediately refused.
Not only that, he didn't say a word to me; just looked at me with disgust before slamming the door shut.
I didn't understand why he wouldn't tell me the truth about the accident.
I found some other witnesses, most of whom were witnesses to Alexander's illegal activities or even victims. But without exception, they all refused to talk about Alexander. They didn't even dare to mention the Cole family.
I was met with cold stares everywhere I asked. No one was willing to testify.
"How's your investigation going?" One day after class, I left the classroom in frustration and ran into Lucas.
His car was parked at the school entrance.
Seeing Lucas lifted my spirits, but I couldn't help but sigh when I mentioned the investigation.
"It's really strange." I shook my head and got into the car with him.
"Do you need my help? A little persuasion could loosen their tongues," Lucas said, pointing to his mouth.
His words made me laugh.
"If we do that, how are we any different from Alexander?" I held Lucas's hand and patted it gently.
"Alright, it's fine." Lucas didn't mind. He gently hugged my shoulders, letting me rest in his arms.
I had Lucas take me to other witnesses' addresses, planning to ask them about Alexander again.
But they still refused to cooperate and unanimously drove me away.
I sat by the roadside, scrolling through my phone, thinking about what to do next.
All the clues I found had been cut off. There was already very little evidence pointing to Alexander, and with uncooperative witnesses, even the best lawyer would struggle to put him in jail.
Just as I was pondering, I received a message from Sienna.
"This news has spread widely! It's on many websites." Sienna seemed more anxious than I was. "What should we do?"
I clicked on the news, and there were photos of me and Lucas, along with a glaring headline "Justice-Seeking College Student Actually the Lover of a Mafia Boss!"
The photo was taken when Lucas and I met, and I didn't notice someone was taking pictures!
The post also contained many harsh comments. Some even said, "She isn't fighting Alexander for justice."
"What a hypocritical woman!"
"She's the lover of a Mafia Boss? What right does she have to talk about the law?"
Their words were incredibly harsh. The insults kept coming, and the replies to the post kept increasing.
Why did it turn out like this? I just wanted to know the truth.
