Chapter 31 Only You

Anna cringed at the look in John’s eyes. His eyes burned with anger as he pushed the phone toward her.
“Explain this!”
Anna took the phone and stared in horror at the picture on the screen. She wanted to close her eyes but couldn’t look away. She saw that it was the coffee shop from today. Sickness curled around her stomach more as each second went by.
“Explain this!” john yelled again and Anna jumped.
“I went to get coffee at Izzy’s and Anthony was there.”
“No, explain why you’re kissing him!” John said grabbing the phone from her hand and stalking across the living room.
“He kissed me!”
“It doesn’t look like you were fighting him off Anna.”
“Are you kidding me? If I wanted Anthony I could have been with him years ago. Good lord, I could have him now if I wanted. The minute after this was taken I pushed him off and reminded him I was married.”
John paced in front of the fireplace and raked his hands through his hair. He turned to her with an unreadable expression in his eyes. “Is this to get back at me for what happened with Erin the other night?”
“Are you crazy? You sound insane right now. This has nothing to do with what happened the other night.”
“Are you sure?” He asked as he strode back his eyes wild. Maybe you were more jealous than you let on and now this is how you punish me.”
“Who do you think I am? I don’t play those kinds of games. I thought we were past that. Do you really think I would kiss someone else after all we’ve accomplished, after all, we’ve been through?” Anna felt her heartburn at his accusations. As scared as she had been about being followed, the look in his eyes terrified her more.
“No,” he said quietly, “I don’t…”
“Then why would you say something like that? All that makes you look like is a jealous A$%!” Anna saw all the progress they had made slipping away and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She turned and started to walk away but John moved faster grabbing her in his arms from behind.
“Your right, I am a jealous A$%. I just saw the picture and my head just about exploded. That coupled with what just happened made me crazy. I’m so sorry.”
Anna wanted to pull away but something made her turn to him instead. “How could you think I would do that? After I believed you about Erin?”
“I know I’m a jerk, but it seems like I keep screwing up and having to beg you for forgiveness. I seem to always be making a mess of things.”
“You do have a knack for making a A&% of yourself,” Anna said as she looked up at him. “I would never do anything to risk this.”
John cupped her face and looked into her eyes “I really am sorry. I know you would never do anything like this on purpose.”
“He kissed me, he even asked me to leave you.”
“What!” John said pulling back “Are you kidding me, I’m going to kill him!”
“Please just stop, Anna said pulling his attention back to her, “Can we just forget Anthony and Erin for now. I’m really scared.”
“Of course,” he said brushing her hair back from her face “This has been a horrible day at work, and then you get followed, I don’t know what I’m thinking.
“I don’t either,” Anna said as she sat down on the couch and cupped her head in her hands. “I can’t think straight and you are talking about Anthony and some stupid kiss.”
“Come here,” John said as he pulled her into his arms tucking her under his chin. “I’m so sorry for everything.”
“What I don’t understand is how you could even doubt me,” Anna said as she traced the buttons on his shirt. “I trusted you, don’t you think you should trust me.”
“Yes, I just have a hard time when it comes to you. All I seem to be are emotions where you’re concerned. I can’t seem to stop myself from reacting even if I know in my mind that it is stupid.”
“Well, you need to get it together because I deserve to be trusted.”
“I know,” he said softly, “what can I do to make it up to you?”
“Take me to bed, it has been a long day.”
“Really?” he asked with a waggle of his eyebrows.
“Keep dreaming.” She said as he wrapped her in his arms and walked her up to their room.
He ran a bath and stripped her clothes off gently with kisses and soft touches all over her skin. Anna’s heart was hesitant after the distrust he showed downstairs. Anna had given him her trust and to have him not trust in return hurt her somewhere deep inside. John helped her slip into the tub and joined her apologizing with each kiss along her body. Anna gave in, glad to have him in her arms realizing that trust has to grow over time especially after what they had been through.
John whispered words of regret and longing as he pushed inside her and Anna opened her heart to him even though there was a voice inside her head that questioned why she had to accept less than full trust from her husband.
What did this mean for their future?
