Chapter 64 Revelations
“I said you promised to marry me.” Isabel spat out as she put her hands on her brown-robed hips. “You told me you were done with this farce of a marriage and you wanted me.”
John stated at her in horror, “I would never marry you, even if there was no Anna.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Isabel shouted at him, her pretty face going red.
John looked her in the eye, trying to make just one of her. “I said, I would never marry you.”
“How can you say that? After all, we promised each other just a few hours ago.”
“I don’t remember a few hours ago, let alone promising you that I would leave my wife. I didn’t even have that much to drink.”
“You looked like you’d had a few when I got here.”
John shook his head because something didn’t seem right. He tried to think but his head was still fuzzy. Was it possible that he had slept with her? The thought brought horror rushing at him but then he reasoned that he would never do that because it would mean losing Anna. He had gone through too much to lose her now.
“I only remember having one, while I waited for Anna.”
“Oh my God, If I hear about your precious Anna one more time I might scream! She is nothing compared to me and I can’t believe we are even having this conversation.”
“She is everything, she’s been everything for as long as I can remember, even before I knew it.”
“I can’t believe you are so hung up on her!” Isabel growled as she turned and began grabbing her clothes in a fit of anger. “I told your mom this wouldn’t’ work” she muttered to herself as she bent over. John's head turned in her direction and she froze, realizing what she’d said. She stood slowly and began trying to back away.
“What did you say?” John hissed as he felt his head clear as anger pushed the wooziness away.
“Nothing, just that I can’t believe you are so hung up on her.”
“No the other thing about how you told my mom this wouldn’t work?” What did that mean Isabel?
She smiled and tried to back into the bathroom but he was too quick for her. He approached and put his hand on her throat holding her against the bathroom door. “Tell me what you meant?” he growled in a low dangerous voice.
Isabel gulped and tried to pull away but John’s grip tightened and she wasn’t going anywhere.
“What did you say?” He asked again with a menacing look in his green eyes.
“I.. I said I told you mom it wouldn’t work.”
“Explain.” He said in a low dangerous voice.
“I can’t,” She panted gasping as John gently tightened his hand.
“You can.”
“Your mother gave me the drug to slip in your drink, she called Anna once she knew that I had you drugged and upstairs. Your mother promised that I would get to marry you if I could just get you in bed.”
“Did anything happen?”
Isabel wanted to lie but she was worried about what he would do if she tried. “NO, you were too out of it, moaning Anna’s name. I was actually glad when she showed up so that you would shut up.”
“You Bit&^! John roared as he pushed her away “how could you do this to your own cousin? She gave you chance after chance and you just abused her love and trust.”
Isabel smiled “I have always been out for number one. This is no different.”
“If I didn’t need to find Anna now I might throttle you. You are not going to say anything to anyone, especially not my mother. I will deal with them later.”
Isabel sat quietly as John pulled on a pair of jeans and a black shirt and began dialing his phone. He called his friend Nate and asked him to come over so he wouldn’t have to drive. He hung up and began to dial Anna. She did not pick up, instead letting it go to voicemail. He cursed Anna’s habit of leaving her phone on vibrate and began calling where he thought she might be. This turned out to be a dead end as an idea popped into his head.
He dialed Bess’s number and waited for her to answer.
“Bess, it’s John, Anna’s husband, I really need to find her, can you track her phone?”
“John, I’m only going to say this once, don’t call my phone again.”
John was shocked at Bess’s attitude. Over the last few weeks they had spent a lot of time with Bess and Nathan and he considered them some of his best friends. Bess acted like he was the lowest piece of scum on earth. A cold shiver tripped down his spine.
“She’s with you isn’t she?”
Bess was quiet and John could almost hear her thinking.
“Can I talk to her please?” John asked hoping Nate hurried up.
“No John you can’t, she doesn’t want to talk to you”
“You can’t keep her from talking to me, she is my wife.”
“You should have remembered that.” Bess said in a voice that told him without a doubt that she knew everything.
“Bess please let me talk to her, I have to explain, I am so worried about her.”
“You weren’t worried about her when you were in bed with Isabel.”
“Bess let me talk to her!”
“John…” She began and then Anna came on the phone.
Her voice was pained, obviously, she had been crying and it broke John’s heart. He had not been careful enough with it and he could almost hear it breaking from there.
“John please leave me alone.”
“I can’t, you have to know the truth. I didn’t sleep with Isabel.”
“I saw you, John,” Anna said in the quietest, dullest voice he’d ever heard. It sounded hollow and hopeless.
“Where are you? Please let me come to you and explain.”
“No, I want you to stay away from me, actions speak louder than words. I’m done trusting you.”
“Anna please listen to me...” John cried into the phone.
“No, I’m done.” She said softly and then the phone went dead in his hand with a click. John yelled and threw his phone across the room where it shattered against the wall and went silent. John hurried out to his friend’s car and jumped in giving him directions to the office. He hoped Anna was there, He had to make her see the truth, he had to make her listen. Otherwise, he wasn’t sure what he was going to do.
