Chapter 63 I Did What?

John drug himself to the door before his legs collapsed. He hit the floor hard but kept trying to reach the door even though he knew Anna was gone. “What the hell happened?” John thought to himself as he rolled over to his back. His head felt like lead and his tongue was thick. Black spots danced in front of his eyes and he knew he was going to vomit. “Anna,” He croaked as he watched the ceiling fan move back and forth.
“She’s not here, you know that. Here honey let me help you up.” Isabel said as she lifted John and helped him back to bed. He flopped back onto the coverlet and wished he was dead.
“Why are you in my room? And why are you calling me Honey?”
Isabel sat beside him and brushed the hair back of his forehead as his eyes closed in misery. “Don’t you remember? I came over to make amends and you and I had a drink. One thing led to another and we ended up here.”
“That’s not possible, I was waiting for Anna and you barged in.”
“John, we had some whiskey, well a lot of whiskey,” She giggled softly” and you told me how lonely you have been lately since Anna was being distant and…”
“And?” John asked cracking one eye open.
“We made love.”
John’s eyes burst open as her words sunk in. “We did what?”
“John don’t act like you don’t remember, I barely had time to cover up when Anna burst in the door.”
“Anna was here?” John asked in horror. He looked down at his naked body on the bed and Isabel beside him dressed in His robe.
“Yes, but she just peeked in and then left, I guess she couldn’t stand to see us together.”
“What is going on? Why am I so woozy, I’m getting about three out of every five words your saying.”
“John, I know you feel bad but we really couldn’t wait. You kept calling me your princess and you actually ripped my new blouse because you wanted me so much, we barely made it up here.”
“Why would I have sex with you? I love my wife.”
“You used to love your wife,” She said running her hands through his hair, “You told me you are tired of all the drama and you want to be with someone who understands your life.”
John pushed her hands away and covered himself with the coverlet. “I love Anna,” John said rubbing his head. A pounding headache had started behind his eyes and it wasn’t getting any worse “I would never cheat on her with you.”
Isabel jerked back and John heard a sniffle. “You told me that you loved me, that all the times you stood up for Anna was just a way to try and keep yourself away from me. So what, now that you have had me you are going to pretend you don’t want me?”
“I don’t remember ever wanting you or “having you”. John said with a moan as he sat up. The room swam and there were two of Isabel.
“How could you?” She screamed stamping her foot “you promised you would marry me.”
John gagged as he squinted in the light of the room. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Anna pushed the accelerator harder speeding through the downtown. She knew the speed limit was 35 but something inside her didn’t care. Image after image of John lying naked beside Isabel in their bed ate at her heart. She alternated between anger and wanting to throw up every few seconds.
“Stupid bast^^&!? She screamed as she drove. She took a turn too fast and her car slid, almost going off the road, Anna grabbed the wheel and pulled it back in time. The car groaned as she straightened the wheel, narrowly missing oncoming traffic. She pulled to the side of the road and parked the car as tears blinded her vision. She tried to pull it together but found herself slamming her fist against the wheel as she cried. She wrapped her arms around herself and cried. She cried for all the dreams that were gone, she cried for the trust she had in him that was now smashed.
The phone rang and she saw that It was Bess calling. Anna needed someone to talk to that was not related to all this mess.
“Bess.” Anna sobbed “I’m so glad you called.”
“Anna, what’s wrong, are you crying?”
“I.. I saw John.”
“Saw John what hon? You’re not making sense.”
Anna rocked wanting to tell her, but at the same time dreading it. “I saw him in bed with Isabel.”
The silence was deafening and Anna could practically hear the shock rolling down the line. “No, are you sure? He hated Isabel.”
“I saw it with my own eyes, they were in our bed, she was sleeping on my pillow.” Anna practically screamed as she cried harder.
“Where are you? I’m coming to you.”
“I.. I don’t know, “Anna admitted, “I was going so fast and I started to slide, but I managed to save it in time, I’m parked along the road somewhere.”
“Hold on,” Bess said in disbelief. Anna heard the clacking of keys but it seemed far away and distant. Anna was lost in a haze of misery.
“Don’t drive. I‘ve got your cell phone on GPS and I’m on my way. Stay put.”
“Okay, please hurry.”
“I’m on my way,” Bess said and the line went dead.
Anna hung up the phone and took off her wedding ring. She looked at the diamond and saw only the broken promises it represented. She threw the ring as hard as she could and it bounced across the car landing on the floor. Anna laid her head back as it started to rain feeling more miserable than she had in her entire life. The glint of the diamond taunted her in the dim light and Anna cried harder.
