Chapter 17 A Cheap Bargain
"Sister!" Lilly was extremely angry, "Helping is a matter of friendship, not helping is a matter of personal duty. How can you speak ill of others just because Sophia didn't help?"
Maria Walker replied, "If she were a good person, wouldn't she help with such a small favor?"
"You're practically emotionally blackmailing her," Lilly was extremely angry, but she had no way to deal with these two-faced mother and daughter.
In order to get Sophia's help, the mother and daughter began to scheme and torment Lilly. They gave Noah to Lilly, saying that as long as Connor was not released, Lilly would not be allowed to take care of the child, coming up with all sorts of ways to prevent Lilly from going to work.
Because they knew that it was Sophia who encouraged Lilly to work.
Sophia treated Lilly like a sister, she wouldn't disregard Lilly's difficulties. How could Lilly work while taking care of a child? Lilly thought about hiring a nanny, but couldn't find a suitable one for the time being.
Sophia also felt sorry for Lilly and didn't want her to go back to being a housewife. After several days of distressing, she finally compromised.
That day, Noah was crying incessantly in the office, making it impossible for Lilly to work, so Sophia had to call Remington.
Remington was at the multi-functional conference room at Waverley Mansion was projecting a 2 billion investment plan from a mobile phone, while the executive team analyzed and discussed it.
On the projector, there was an incoming call from Sophia, his wife.
From the day they got married, Remington changed Sophia's contact name to "Wife Sophia" to ensure he wouldn't forget her name. Among the executive team, except for Dylan, no one knew that he had been single for many years and had gotten married.
Everyone was taken aback by this sudden revelation. Remington, with a grim face, interrupted the call and hung up, saying, "Let's continue."
Sophia felt sorry for Lilly and was quite anxious, so she called again. This time, Remington answered, and he spoke first, "I'm busy, we can talk when I get home tonight."
"But..." Sophia's matter was urgent, but since he said he was busy, she didn't want to disturb him, so she replied, "Okay, we'll talk when you get home tonight."
The call ended.
Sophia couldn't help but worry about her best friend's situation. This was something only Remington could help with, but she didn't want to disturb him at work. She was extremely anxious.
At that moment, Remington called again.
Wasn't he busy? Why was he calling again?
Furrowing her brows, Sophia decisively answered the phone. Remington asked, "What happened just now?"
He himself didn't know why he called her back. After hanging up her call, he wondered if she had something urgent, which was why she called him twice in a row.
Normally, since he could hang up her call, he could immediately refocus on the meeting. But he didn't. Worried that she might have something urgent, he felt restless and unsettled during the meeting. That's why he left the conference room and immediately called her back.
To avoid wasting his time, she got straight to the point and told him about Connor's situation.
Remington responded, "That punk has a bad character, you shouldn't have asked me for this favor."
Connor deserved to be taught a lesson. Being locked up in detention was his own fault.
Sophia replied, "I know. Connor certainly deserves it. But Lilly's mother-in-law and elder sister-in-law threatened that if Connor doesn't come back, they won't let her take care of their child anymore. That means she won't be able to work."
Remington said, "Then she can stay at home and focus on taking care of the child. With her husband earning money, she doesn't necessarily have to work."
Sophia's emotions rose, and she exclaimed, "Do you also think that women must stay at home and take care of their families? That for the sake of the children, they must be trapped at home as housewives?"
Remington calmly and indifferently replied, "She is the child's mother. Since her mother-in-law doesn't provide proper support, she doesn’t have to work. She takes care of the children, so the responsibility of taking care of the children should fall on her. This is something she should do, and it is only right and natural."
"I won't use my social connections again for trivial matters that have nothing to do with me."
Sophia felt a heaviness in her chest.
Not because of Remington's refusal, but because Remington believed it was only right and natural for Lilly to take care of the children.
Can women only stay at home and take care of children?
"You're right, you're not obligated to help my best friend. But you shouldn't be biased against women. You don't even know Lilly's situation. She works hard at home to take care of the children. Connor not only doesn't appreciate her efforts, but also criticizes her for being out of touch with society, and even... even has improper thoughts about other women. If Lilly doesn't start working outside the home, she'll have to wait for Connor to find another woman and divorce her before she realizes she can't even support herself."
Sophia added, "She can't stay at home and take care of the children. If she wants to work outside the home, she has her reasons. You shouldn't say that it is only right and natural for her to stay home and take care of the children, that is also Connor's responsibility."
After speaking, Sophia's emotions were still a bit heated. The reason for her excitement was Remington's biases against women.
But soon, she regained her logic and calmed down, saying with some distance, "Forget about the favor I asked of you just now. I will find another way."
After hanging up the phone, Sophia was still angry.
Do men all think that women should sacrifice for the family?
Is taking care of children something that only women should do?
She didn't expect Remington to have this kind of thinking.
If Remington really had this kind of thinking, she would never have children with him.
In the midst of her anger, Remington called back.
"Aren't you busy?" Sophia suppressed her anger and spoke with a distant tone, "You do your thing, don't worry about me."
Remington's tone softened a lot, "It was my bad attitude earlier, I didn't understand your best friend's situation. Listening to what you said, she does seem to have it tough."
Sophia didn't answer. Perhaps she was still mad at him.
And he noticed that she was angry, so his voice became softer, "I'm sorry, you're not angry anymore, right?"
He continued, "What I meant was that men should earn money to support the family and provide a good life for their wives and children. They shouldn't make their wives work outside. I didn't mean women must be housewives." Remington was able to realize the problem so quickly and apologize to her.
Sophia was surprised.
She wasn't mad at him anymore, "It's fine, I accept your apology."
Remington let out a sigh of relief. She wasn't angry anymore, and the stifled breath in his chest eased a lot. "That punk will be able to come home today. I called-"
"Thanks," Sophia said, "Is it really done?" Sophia asked, somewhat surprised.
Technically, he did save a prominent lawyer.
That lawyer could indeed have Connor released within minutes. But being a person of high status like Opulence, he must have had official duties and been very busy. Even if Remington went to ask for help, it would still take time, right?
However, in less than two minutes, it was done?
Sophia couldn't help but exclaim, "The lawyer you saved is really giving you a reputation!"
Remington replied casually, "It's just a debt of gratitude for saving his life."
"But even if you owe him a debt of gratitude, he is a prominent lawyer, a renowned figure in Opulence. He must be as busy as a spinning top."
"He is indeed busy. Perhaps he just happened to have some free time and helped out."
While Sophia was still pondering, Remington thought for a moment and asked, "Sophia, when you mentioned that Connor had thoughts about other women outside, were you referring to yourself?"
Why, why was he suddenly asking her this question?
Sophia couldn't react in time.
Is Remington really so perceptive?
"How did you know?" She was extremely surprised.
Even if Remington had great insight, he couldn't possibly see so accurately, right?
Remington and Connor had only met twice, and both times were scenes where she and Connor were at odds, like enemies. Under such circumstances, Remington could still see that Connor had ill intentions towards her? Sophia couldn't help but doubt Remington's ability to see through things.
This ability to see through things is not something an ordinary person can compare with!
