Chapter 20 Does she have another man?
But it didn't matter. Because life was already a mess, how much worse could it get? With a man accusing her fiercely, she didn't even have the energy to argue.
Instead of wasting energy on a fight, she'd rather get some more sleep. Because she was truly exhausted. After Connor finished getting dressed and stormed out of the room, he ran into Agnes in the living room.
Agnes had already heard the argument from inside and asked in a rush, "Connor, what happened?"
Connor's face didn't look good, "You're giving me a hard time as soon as I come back, showing no consideration for others. Forget it, I'll sleep in the guest room."
Agnes immediately went to knock on Lilly's door. Lilly got up.
"Open the door. Connor just came back from detention. Not only do you not care about his feelings, but you also sent him to the guest room to sleep. Why are you so irresponsible?"
On the dark, wrinkled face, there was a fierce and evil expression. Lilly was already used to it. She was not afraid of losing face, so she directly said,
"Your son came back and wanted to sleep with me. These past few days, I've been taking care of the children and working, I'm too tired and have no energy. Can't you let me have a good night's sleep? Is it me who doesn't know how to care for others, or is it him?"
"Who told you to go to work?" Agnes angrily retorted, "It's your own choice, so it's your own fault for being tired."
Lilly was about to explode from anger. She promised not to argue with Agnes, but she couldn't help it anymore. But Agnes's fierce look, even if she argued with her, she probably wouldn't win. She should save her energy.
It was her own choice to marry Connor and enter this kind of family, she couldn't blame others. "But I still have to work tomorrow, I don't have the energy to argue with you. I'm going to sleep." She closed the door and wearily lay back on the bed.
Outside the door, Agnes scolded a few more times, but when she realized Lilly wasn't opening the door, she had to leave grumbling. Just as Lilly was about to take a rest, her youngest son woke up.
Outside the door, Agnes walked to the guest room and looked at her son lying down, laughing at his phone, and suspiciously asked, "Connor, does Lilly have another man out there?"
Connor was chatting with "Sugar" from last time.
"Mom." He put down his phone and quickly sat up, "Why would you say that?"
"Otherwise, why wouldn't she sleep with you?" Agnes's tone grew more teasing, "She must have another man outside."
The one who was truly guilty was actually Connor. He hurriedly said, "Mom, please stop being so suspicious all the time. Lilly is not that kind of person."
After the commotion at the detention center, Sophia and Lilly threw themselves into their work. On this day, Sophia and Lilly went to collect rent for some houses together. There were a group of people outside the real estate project, holding up banners.
Sophia approached and asked, "What's going on, why are there so many banners? Did the developer delay the delivery again?"
The man wearing glasses had a distressed expression. "It's not just a delay. The developer took the money and ran away, and the real estate project has been abandoned for a long time. We just found out."
"This heartless developer doesn't care about our livelihoods. My family's two million down payment is gone, and we still have to pay a monthly mortgage of twenty thousand dollars to the bank. How are we supposed to live? This is our hard-earned money for our whole lives." Sophia felt like the sky was falling.
"No way, the developer ran away, and the project has been abandoned?"
"The first and second phases were only halfway completed, and the later phases didn't even start construction. The government is already getting involved. We're doomed, doomed!"
Suddenly, Sophia's legs went weak, and she almost couldn't stand. She had paid a down payment of over one million nine hundred thousand dollars, over one million nine hundred thousand dollars.
That was all her savings in Opulence, struggling for nearly twelve years, working hard and earning money at all costs.
Is it going to end like this?
Lilly didn't know how to comfort her, "Sophia, don't worry, there must be a way out. It can't just end like this."
Sophia also hoped for a way out. In the following days, she ran around, inquiring in various departments. But even the government confirmed that the developer had fled.
Her down payment for the house really went down the drain.
For several days in a row, Sophia was in a bad mood, and even Charles noticed. Seeing her return from work listless in the evenings, Charles asked, "Sophia, do you have something on your mind?"
"Dad," Sophia looked up, "I might have to continue living in this crowded rental house."
Frowning, Charles said, "Didn't you say the house would be ready soon? And you asked me to help with the renovation?"
Sophia's heart felt heavy, "The developer took the money and ran a long time ago. The project is unfinished, and the relevant authorities can't do anything about it."
How could this happen?
"So, you still have to make monthly loan payments, right?"
"Yeah."
"How much is the monthly payment?"
"More than 18,000 dollars."
"That's a lot. You must be under a lot of pressure," Charles thought. It's not easy for an ordinary girl like Sophia to pay over 18,000 dollars in monthly loan payments at Opulence.
To their family, this more than 18,000 dollars was like pocket change, but for Sophia, who was starting her own small business, it was not a small amount of money. Charles thought about how he could help alleviate some of Sophia's stress.
Afterwards, he intentionally researched the real estate development Sophia bought into, and it turned out to be a small developer. The developer did indeed take the money and run, and the project did indeed remain unfinished.
On this day, Charles changed out of his shabby clothes and dressed up nicely to go to the Waverley Mansion.
"Good afternoon, Chairman."
"Yeah," Charles hurriedly went to see Remington.
Seeing Charles stride in, Remington deliberately asked, "Dad, why aren't you at home making soup for your daughter-in-law? What are you doing here?"
Lately, Charles had been wholeheartedly focused on taking care of his daughter-in-law's diet. He said he wanted to wait until Sophia gained some weight so that she wouldn't suffer so much when giving birth to their grandson in the future.
It was already 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and he should have been at home making soup.
"Remington," Charles walked in and got straight to the point, "Take over that development project in East Mountain neighborhood, put our real estate brand on it, complete the unfinished construction, and quickly hand over the houses to the owners."
"What small development project? I've never heard of it," Remington furrowed his brows.
Charles sat down and said, "The small development project that Sophia bought into. The developer ran away with the money and left it unfinished."
Remington finally understood, and he furrowed his brows.
Tightly frowning, he coldly sneered, "Are you implying that I should go and acquire that unfinished property on behalf of your daughter-in-law because the one she bought turned out to be a failure and you're afraid she'll be upset?"
"Do you expect me to just give her a property directly?" Charles anxiously exclaimed, "You know Sophia’s temperament, if I were to really give her a house, she definitely wouldn't accept it."
Remington sat in front of Charles with an unpleasant expression on his face, "Dad, I admit that I don't dislike Sophia and I do appreciate her qualities. But why do you think I would acquire an unfinished development worth billions of dollars just for her? It would be a significant loss to our assets."
Charles nonchalantly responded, "Billions of dollars is nothing for our family, you shouldn't be so stingy. Hurry up and set up an acquisition project team to implement this matter."
"Hmph!" Remington coldly snorted, "One hundred billion dollars might truly be insignificant for our family. But don't forget, we are businessmen. All our investments are based on making money. This is obviously a losing investment. I would never invest in it."
He added, "Sophia may be my nominal wife, and I can help her with some small things, but to invest billions of dollars in her, no way."
Charles's face turned dark, "You, you really won't help?"
