Chapter 18 Wife Sophia
No wonder Remington felt an inexplicable hostility towards Connor. Usually, such insignificant individuals were like ants to him and posed no threat at all. But at this moment, Remington felt that he had to guard against Connor, this insignificant person.
What if he took advantage of Sophia, or made advances towards her?
Of course, he wasn't aware of this worry, he just subconsciously placed Connor in the enemy camp. When Connor sneakily glanced at Sophia, he had a despicable look typical of a man.
It was the sinister and malicious look of a man who wanted to possess a woman but failed to do so.
Although it was just a fleeting glance, so brief that others couldn't notice. But Remington, with his sharp eyes, clearly captured Connor's gaze when he assessed Sophia. Standing at the peak of power, he had observed countless people. Connor's disgusting and despicable intentions couldn't escape his eyes.
Even though Sophia was only his wife in name. But if Connor dared to have any ideas about his woman, he would be asking for death. From now on, this Connor had better not provoke him. Provoking him would lead to certain death.
Thinking of Connor's despicable intentions towards Sophia, Remington also deduced the truth behind something.
He asked Sophia, "So, on the day we got our marriage license, you said you only got married to resolve some current troubles. Are those troubles referring to Connor?"
Sophia silently confirmed this on the phone.
Remington continued to ask, "Even if it's for paper marriage, you could have found a man you liked. Why did you choose a completely unfamiliar stranger?"
In reality, Remington was not interested in these things at all. But he still asked.
He didn't even realize that he was somewhat anticipating her answer, wanting to further understand her emotional state. So he silently waited for her response.
The call suddenly grew quiet.
Sophia's breathing stretched out, as if she was reluctant to answer this question. Emotions that one is not willing to mention to others are always buried deep in the heart.
Not hearing the answer, Remington's body visibly tensed, and he involuntarily squeezed the phone tightly, but he pretended nonchalantly, "It's okay, if you don't want to answer, then pretend I never asked."
However, his brow involuntarily furrowed, and there was a trace of intense emotion between his eyebrows that even he didn't notice.
Sophia let out a deep sigh before saying, "If I tell you that I don't have anyone I like, would you believe me?"
On the other end of the phone, Remington couldn't help but lift his lips, and even the strength he held the phone with loosened slightly.
Perhaps this was the answer he wanted to hear. But he didn't realize it himself.
Meanwhile, Dylan, who had chased after him from the conference room and saw that he hadn't returned for over ten minutes, came out and saw the smile on his face while he was on the phone with his newlywed wife.
Casually catching a glimpse of Dylan, Remington finally realized that the executives in the conference room were all still waiting for him.
"Sophia, I'll be busy for now. Connor's matter has been handled, but we still need to fundamentally resolve your friend's situation. It can't be explained in a short time. We can talk about it when I get home tonight."
After hanging up the phone, Dylan walked up to him and asked without any seriousness, "Remington, you're smiling so happily. You've already started loving your new wife so quickly?"
Remington quickened his pace, his face turning cold, "Who told you? I don't have time for that."
Walking alongside him, Dylan's smile became even more obvious, "Alright, you can keep acting tough then."
This woman named Sophia seems to be quite capable.
She can even make Remington smile with such infatuation?
Of course, Dylan's exaggerated statement of "infatuation" might be a bit much. But for Remington, who hasn't dated in years, to smile like a spring breeze, it indicates that his state of mind has undergone some changes.
Unfortunately, he is also stubborn and tough. Remington stopped at the entrance of the conference room, his brow furrowed.
Sophia, remembering her conversation with Remington, was surprised by the sudden appearance of the lawyer from Opulence at the police station. He was not just polite and courteous, but also showed great respect towards Remington.
Lilly, while nursing her baby and working on her computer, found a photo of the lawyer and confirmed that he was indeed the same person. Sophia and Lilly speculated about the lawyer's connection to Remington, considering his prestigious position at the Waverley Group.
However, Sophia dismissed the idea, as Remington was currently bankrupt and living with her in a rundown rental house. She believed that the lawyer's respect for Remington stemmed from a sense of gratitude rather than any significant connection. Nonetheless, Lilly expressed her gratitude to Sophia for her role in having Connor released with Remington's help.
"What else will he do to torment me? I hope she can help me take care of the children properly tomorrow." At this time, Lilly finished feeding her milk and lifted the child up to burp him.
Sophia said again, "You still can't fully rely on your mother-in-law to help you with the children, it's best to find a reliable nanny so that you can focus on your work."
"What nanny can I afford?" Lilly smiled bitterly, "I only earn 8,000 a month. Now, a decent nanny from Opulence would cost more than that."
Sophia said, "Even if you use your entire salary to hire a nanny, it's worth it. Because you still have room for development and can earn more in the future. Only when you earn money can you stand tall and provide better security for yourself and your child."
Lilly said, "What you're saying makes sense, but it's still difficult to put into practice."
Sophia said, "What other choice do you have? You've already met a man like Connor, you can only work hard on your own. However, I will always be there with you. If you don't have enough money to hire a nanny, I'll help you out first."
Lilly said, "Sophia, you also bought a house and have monthly mortgage payments, how can I borrow money from you? I already feel guilty about Connor harassing you."
Sophia said, "Let's not bring up Connor's matters. Besides, as sisters, let's not exchange these polite words. I will keep an eye out for a nanny for you."
In the evening, Lilly returned home with her youngest son. Her mother-in-law and older sister-in-law were chatting inside, and she could hear everything clearly from outside the door, "Mom, we finished all the ribs in this pot, not leaving any for Lilly at all. She's still breastfeeding, can't we cut her some slack?"
"Ribs are expensive, why should we save any for her? She's always looking for excuses to avoid paying her debts, I haven't even settled the score with her yet, why should I leave her any ribs?"
"Aren't you afraid of being so obvious? Will she divorce Connor? I heard they were fighting about getting a divorce last time."
"Divorce?" Agnes, the mother-in-law, let out a cold laugh from inside the house.
"Who would lose in a divorce?" Agnes answered her own question, "Obviously, Lilly would lose."
"When she married into our family, we didn't give her a penny in dowry. She even gave Connor a $100,000 startup fund, and gave my husband and me $1,200 each as a red envelope. She also paid the down payment for the house."
"After divorcing this kind of woman who pays to be married, we would still profit."
"With Connor's current net worth, it's easy for him to find a young girl. Why should I be afraid of her divorcing him?"
Lilly outside the door was so infuriated that she almost spat blood. It turned out that her kindness, thoughtfulness, and politeness had become a way for Agnes to take advantage of her.
She was so angry that she wanted to have a huge fight with Agnes on the spot. As she put her hand on the doorknob, she pushed hard.
