Secret Trip to the Market

Morning comes and I rise early excited to learn more about Remly. From what I saw yesterday it is a very lively city and everyone is so kind. I guess they are all just as excited as we are about opening the borders. I climb out of bed, quietly not to wake Amelia and grab my dress to change in the bathroom. I shut the door softly and strip out my night clothes.

The bathroom is small but elegant. The tub is wrapped in vines painted white and a small white vanity sits in the corner. Behind the door is a long mirror showing everything. My green eyes stare back at me. My long dark blond hair hangs in curls just above my nipples. My breasts are plump and perky, my waist sinks in till you get to my hips and it widens out again. I sigh and look away. If only I was beautiful enough for Elau. I grab my pastel blue dress and slip it on, taking only a few minutes to tighten the corset, and then sneaking back out of the bathroom.

“Where are you going?” Amelia’s groggy voice says from beneath her covers.

“I’m going to explore before breakfast.” I say in a hushed voice, “Go back to sleep, you still have a few hours.” I walk out of the room and down the stairs almost to the front door when another voice stops me.

“Sneaking out early?” I turn to see Elau smiling at me.

“I have a few hours till breakfast and I was hoping to go for a walk.” I explain

“May I join you?” He asks, almost uncertain of the question itself.

“Sure” I mumble and turn away, pushing the door open and slipping into the morning air. Elau slips out behind me and shuts the door softly. I begin walking towards town and Elau follows in silence. We make our way to the markets and I stop at a stall selling Elvish silks. “These are beautiful.” I comment, brushing my fingers across the silk scarfs. I stop on a long pink scarf with green lining.

“That’s a lovely one.” Elau takes it from me and walks over to the Older Elvish woman running the stall. With an exchange of a few coins he is back and places it in my hands.

“Oh, Elau, you didn’t have to.”

“Such a beautiful scarf deserves a beautiful neck to be wrapped around.” He smiles cheekily and walks past me to the next stand. I feel my cheeks redden but take a few breaths and shake my head. He means nothing by it, he is engaged to Maeve, and I just have a silly crush. Nothing to ruin our friendship over. I wrap the scarf around my neck and follow Elau to the next stall.

“I feel like this is a dream.” I tell him with a toothy smile, “You have told me so many stories about Remly, but I never thought I would see it for myself.” I pick up a soap from the stall and smell the sweet rosy scent. “And now here I am walking the markets just like you described.”

“I planned on taking you here one day. Even if I had to disguise you as an Elf.” He chuckles. I can’t help but continue to smile, walking around with Elau makes it feel like everything is okay, that we are okay. I had been worried since our last conversation. I didn’t want him to think I was judging him for his engagement. We spent the next hour walking the markets together with Elau buying me pretty much everything I touched. As time slipped by it soon became time to head back for breakfast. We walk back through and I smile and wave at some of the vendors we purchased from till we are out of the market and on the road to the house.

“Nic, before we get back… I just wanted to make sure we are okay.” Elau stops me, grabbing my wrist. “I know that you are disappointed in me but I really am doing what I think is best.”

“I know you are. I’m not disappointed. I’m just… I don’t know… Sad for you.” I pull my arm from his grasp. “I just hate seeing my best friend doing something he doesn’t want to do.”

“How do you know I don’t want to? Maeve is a beautiful woman and will be a great wife.” He defends himself

“She will be a wonderful wife and queen.” I agree with him, “but I can tell you aren’t happy. How can you be with a woman you have barely spoken to? Are you really okay with that? All I want is for you to be happy.” I pause for a moment and watch him take in what I’ve said but then continue. “Although for you this is just a small moment in your life, this will be my whole life. And I might be selfish saying this but I don’t want to spend my life seeing my best friend unhappy, because of a decision he wasn’t allowed to make.”

Elau stares at me for a moment and then responds, “I don’t think I can have what will make me happy.” He takes a couple steps forward, “but for you I will learn to be happy with this decision, if that is what you want.” He walks ahead at a quickened pace. I rub my brow sighing, that is not what I want. I watch him make it to the house and disappear inside.

What I really want is for him to make his own decision. That he would choose to look for love rather than listening to his parents, but what I want doesn’t matter. Elau is stubborn and for him he can love in a couple of hundred years when Maeve is gone. I need to think about myself now. I can’t love an engaged man. It’s not fair to him or Maeve. I can’t give their relationship a real chance until I get over my own feelings. Starting today I am forgetting those feelings and I am supporting Elau as his friend. I brush my fingers through my hair and head back to the house, slipping inside before anyone notices I’ve been gone.
