Preparing for Our Journey

I wake up to the soft light of dawn filtering through the vines and tree branches around the balcony. The colors dance across Amelia’s room, creating a mesmerizing display that felt almost magical. I stretch lazily, savoring the comfort of the silk sheets and the gentle warmth of the morning sun.

Tonight, the full moon will rise, and with it, Elau and I are going to go hunt for Lunasprites in the forbidden forest. The idea makes me nervous. I have heard so many bad things about the Forest, and I personally would not be able to fight a troll.

I sneak out of Amelia’s room careful not to wake her, and enter mine. I dress quickly, choosing a flowing gown of emerald green that matches the lush landscape surrounding the castle. I braid my long, dark hair, weaving in small silver charms that tinkle softly as I move. With a final glance in the mirror, I leave my room and make my way to the dining hall.

The castle is a marvel of elvish craftsmanship this morning. Tall, elegant arches and delicate carvings adorn every surface. The air is filled with the scent of blooming flowers and the distant sound of music, always present in the elvish realm. I love wandering through the halls, discovering new nooks and crannies, each one more enchanting than the last.

As I enter the dining hall, I am greeted by Elau and his family.

"Good morning, Niccola," Elauthin says with a warm smile. "Are you ready for tonight?"

I nod, but look uneasy at his parents watching us.

“What are you up to tonight?” King Eloquen questions us.

“I am escorting Niccola to the light of Breemly.” He tells his father, “She was asking about them the other day in class and I decided to surprise her with a trip during the full moon.” He explains calmly and confidently to his parents.

Queen Iverna's eyes twinkle with amusement. "How lovely! I am sure that will be such a wonderful sight. For now, why don't you join me in the gardens for some fresh air?”

I follow the Queen through the castle and out into the expansive gardens. The sight takes my breath away every time. Flowers of every color imaginable bloomed in perfect harmony, and the air was alive with the hum of bees and the song of birds. We walk along a winding path, eventually reaching a secluded grove where a group of elves are busy arranging flowers enchanting them to shine.

"I can see my son has taken a liking to you, Ambassador.” She says, and I am shocked by her statement.

“I believe we have a good friendship.” I reply not wanting to give too much away.

“Friendships are important. I just want to remind you that Elau is expected to marry a woman of importance.”

“Of course.” I say but my heart sinks hearing this, although I expected as much.

“I’m glad you understand. Now let’s make some decorations for the castles.” She says bending to pluck a beautiful rose from its bush.

I nod, eager to help. I spend the morning weaving garlands of flowers, their sweet scent filling the air around me. I watch as the Queen works with practiced precision, her movements almost a dance. There was a sense of harmony and peace that seemed to infuse everything she did. By noon we head back to the castle and go our separate ways. I feel a tinge of guilt having lied to the Queen about mine and Elau’s relationship.

I make my way back to my room, the soft afternoon light streaming through the window, casting a warm glow on the white floor. I look at the empty bag on my bed, mentally ticking off items I need for my journey tonight. This isn’t just any trip; it was dangerous and Elau and I need to be prepared for anything.

I start with the essentials. First, I pack extra clothes: a few comfortable outfits, a warm jacket, and a sturdy pair of boots. I fold each item carefully, making sure everything would fit neatly. Next, I add a small pouch containing her toiletries: a toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, and a bar of my favorite lavender soap. We should be back by morning but I am preparing for the worse case scenario.

I then move on to my travel gear. I place a map and a compass on top of the clothes, followed by a small journal and a pen.

My next priority was food and water. I fill a water bottle up and added some dried fruit, nuts, and a few pieces of homemade elvish bread to my bag.

With everything packed, I take a moment to look around my room. I feel a mix of excitement and nervousness, but I know this journey is something I have to do. I zip up my bag, slung it over my shoulder, and take a deep breath.

I take a seat on my bed and sit in silence, the weight of the upcoming journey pressing heavily on my chest. I take a deep breath again, trying to calm the whirlwind of anxiety swirling inside of me. I know this journey is something I have to undertake, but the fear of the unknown is daunting.

To ease my mind, I double check my packed bag. I lay out my gear, ensuring I have everything I need. I then visualize myself on the journey, successfully navigating each challenge. I may know nothing about fighting but Elau is a Prince and he will be very skillful in the subject.

A soft knock at the door pulls me from my thoughts. I walk over and open the door as Elau steps inside.

“Hello, love.” He whispers and pulls me into his chest. Just his scent comforts me and I know that with Elau by my side we will be okay. I look up at him and he places a soft kiss on my lips sending tingles down my spine. “Are you ready to go?” He asks with his eyes full of excitement.
