Unsettling News

“I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I really wish I could be certain that your positions are safe, and I feel terrible about it.” Maeve explains the situation to all of us.
“I'm really sorry for letting you down. I tried everything I could to salvage the situation, but it just didn't work out. I know you all have spent your life waiting for this moment, and I understand if you're upset. I hope you can all forgive me. It is not fair that your jobs are at risk and I hate that it is partially my fault.”

Maeve pauses and looks at me but continues. “I'm here for you all. I'm really sorry for disappointing you all, but I know we can figure this out together.”

I sit in our usual classroom with Amelia, Ben, and Luke. We gathered around a polished mahogany table. The air was thick with tension as we discussed the unsettling news that had recently come to light.

Maeve had accidentally slipped to Benjamin that her and Elau’s engagement was coming to an end.

Luke stared down at his hands with a worried look on his face and was the first to speak. "We all know why we're here," he began, his voice steady but laced with worry. "The recent political upheavals between you and Elau have put our positions in jeopardy. We need to address this head-on."

"Indeed, the situation is precarious. We don’t know how the Royal Families will react and the border policy may never be put in place. We need to prepare for the worst" Benjamin responds.

"Who knows if this is even a problem. The Families are smart and trying to make changes. Although they're not fond of broken promises. We need to find a way to demonstrate the value and relevance of uniting our people." Amelia says passionately, telling us everything that is on her mind.

I shift in my seat worried about how to respond. "We must also consider the external pressures. The people are expecting a wedding, and without the alliance there is no real security in our treaties. Our countries are looking inward, to determine the best course of action. I can only hope that means moving forward with the border policies otherwise we might as well start packing."

Luke sighed, rubbing his temples. "Right so all we can do is sit and wait then?"

Amelia speaks up, her eyes sharp with determination. "We need to highlight the benefits of opening the border. This allows for an increase in trade and revenue on both sides. As well as stability for any future endeavors. Having the Elves on our side makes humans very influential. We must show that continuity is crucial for stability and progress."

Benjamin nods. "Agreed. We should compile a comprehensive report detailing the importance of maintaining a connection with the Elvish people. We can list the benefits and show our point of views as humans living in an Elvish community for the last three months.. We need to make a compelling case so that even the King has to agree that moving forward with the treaties is the right thing to do."

I add to Ben’s statement, "We should also seek support from influential allies within our governments. If we can secure endorsements from key figures, like Haldire, who agree with moving forward, it could strengthen our position on the matter."

Luke looked around the table, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. "You all might be right. Just because their engagement is over doesn’t change the fact that opening the borders is a good idea."

We exchanged determined glances, a newfound sense of unity and purpose binding Us together. We quickly begin to write down all of the pros of opening the border and Luke fashions it into an incredible report.

I read through the report aloud,

“Opening borders between countries is essential for a multitude of reasons, ranging from economic benefits to cultural exchange and global cooperation. One of the primary advantages is the economic boost that comes with increased trade and investment. When borders are open, businesses can expand their markets, leading to greater competition, innovation, and efficiency. This not only benefits the sellers involved but also the customers who gain access to a wider variety of goods and services at competitive prices.

Moreover, open borders facilitate the movement of labor, allowing people to seek employment opportunities that best match their skills and aspirations. This can lead to a more efficient allocation of resources and help address labor shortages in certain industries or regions. For individuals, it means better job prospects and the potential for higher wages, which can improve their quality of life and economic stability.

Culturally, open borders promote understanding and tolerance among different nations. When people travel, live, and work in other countries, they are exposed to new ideas, traditions, and ways of life. This exchange can foster mutual respect and diminish prejudices, contributing to a more harmonious global community. Additionally, the sharing of cultural practices can enrich societies, making them more diverse and vibrant.

From a geopolitical perspective, open borders can strengthen international relations and cooperation. Countries that engage in open border policies are more likely to collaborate on global issues such as climate change, security, and public health. This cooperation is crucial in addressing challenges that transcend national boundaries and require a collective effort.

In conclusion, opening borders between countries is important for economic growth, cultural enrichment, and global cooperation. By embracing the movement of goods, services, people, and ideas, nations can build a more prosperous, diverse, and interconnected world.” I finsh reading and look at the group for approval.

“Sounds perfect to me!” Amelia chimes in chipper.

“So we send this to our King, and hope for the best.” I say holding the report, “Since this has all come to light so quickly I am sure we will hear a response from the families soon.” I stand from the table and smile at all of my friends. “I know this is scary and honestly if we are sent home I don’t know what I will do with myself, but I’m getting a feeling that we will make it through this.”

As we leave the grand hall, we all carry with us a sense of urgency and a commitment to our cause. We are not just fighting for our jobs; we are fighting for the stability and prosperity of our nations. And in this shared struggle, we find strength and solidarity.
