Chapter 146
Grayson POV:
It’s a trap that much I was well aware, Netta was to the way she quirked up an eyebrow as she read the treaty. I saw the judgment lying underneath her surprised this low route is the one my father took. He had no bounds to the things he would do and baiting us with truce was one of them.
“What’s his plan now?” James asked me, I wish I knew but in all honesty, I had no clue.
I knew he wanted to get us alone that much was clear but he was under a microscope right now, and there wasn’t anything he could do to us.
We had to set the trap off, that much was clear but we had to do it safely. How we did that was the question. We didn’t know what the trap was which meant we didn’t know how to evade it.
“What do you think?” I asked her and she puzzled over the script.
“He wants us alone, and this obviously meant to bring us to our knees somehow, I know he’ll try and harm one of us but we need to be sensible about who and where,”
“Agreed,”
She had her mother's instinct for strategy without her overblown emotions. If I left her alone with the problem, she’d be able to figure it out. Still, she needed more pieces of the puzzle. We didn’t have any eyes on him so we had no clue what to do.
“We have to send someone but it has to be the right person and they need backup, for what and how much?” She furrowed her brows looking at the sheet of paper.
We went to bed at night, still pondering on it. How do we handle the unknown? I watched her face thinking it over and over as she braided her hair for the night.
“you know something? Don’t you?,” I prodded.
She halted her fingertips and looked over her shoulder at me a grim expression on her face.
“He wants you,” she stated the obvious. “which means we should send you. Which means I should stay here,”
I saw the stubbornness in her firing off, she wanted to fight him. She wanted to end this herself. Right now she knew she couldn’t, this wasn’t a challenge for her. It was a challenge and a summons for me.
She had to stay here and look after our son and trust that I would come back and after months of doing that, I doubt she wanted to go back. Me facing off against Marcus and his father was one thing, they were small beasts compared to the goliath that was my father.
She had had to sit out before and now she’d have to do so again this time her bloodlust unleashed. I have to be covered by a small group of warriors and they couldn’t be her brothers at least not up close. My father would be able to sense them immediately and he’d run away into whatever cave he’d crawled out of.
Not only that, but someone had to be with Christian, it wasn’t fair for him to be without both of us. Even in this newfound rage and anger, she still prioritized him. There were only a rare few hours in the day that he wasn’t by her side.
We decided to respond in kind, we asked the council to sit in on the signing of the treaty. It wouldn’t be much considering how slimy he was, but there would be people there to keep him and check long enough for us to suss out what threat he has designed.
The council happily agreed I know some of them were gathering their popcorn to look at our family drama. If he could only have just kept himself and kept his ego he wouldn’t have to suffer the consequences. Here we were, finishing what he started.
We decided on Elizabeth, Brian, and Lilianna as the closest to me and my brother-in-laws would be on stand by should anything go wrong. Annette’s parents would remain with her and for that, I was thankful I didn’t need my mother-in-law breathing down my neck for this.
I feared being parted from her, The weakness that came from us being separated. I wasn’t there to protect her and she wasn’t there to protect me. We both knew that was what he wanted as well.
When the time came we met on equal ground, somewhere neither of us had any control. My father had suggested Seattle, but that got thrown out immediately. Annette actually laughed at that request.
“Why don’t we just send you to him with a pretty red bow?” She’d rolled her eyes.
We agreed on one of the council's pack lands just outside. They knew this could go south too so they didn’t want their people getting hurt. If they didn't trust him so much, why didn’t they just strip them of their lands and titles?
We ended up between the two of us somewhere in Alberta, I brought my man he brought his, and I waited for all hell to break loose.
“I’ll be listening the whole time one mention of a scratch on you and I’ll send my brothers in to help you,” She held onto my collar like it was my soul, I couldn't stand to walk away from her my mother holding our son.
I was about to do something incredibly perilous and stupid all to protect them and we both knew I might not make it back. James stayed with her and stood by her side, at my order I knew there was only one of her siblings she’d listen to her. Charlie and Theo could have all the false fantasies they want but she was closest to James.
I had to leave her in safe hands, I was heading into the lion's den I had protected myself as much as I could but here we were about to face off, he might be older but I had every faith that he’d be ready for me and where I kept my conscious clean he’d use every measure of underhanded tricks to bury me.
The one thing I had that he didn’t have was motivation I memorized the moment I let her go as she took our son in hand and watched me walk away. I wouldn’t let her spend her life alone, I’d come back. He worried over his money, his buildings, his businesses, and his power, but I had a *family* that I had to see for the rest of my life I couldn’t give up on that.
