Chapter 148

Annette POV:
We knew there would be something up Deacon's sleeve, it was like asking him to breathe. He wanted to beat my husband into submission and there was one great weakness Grayson had…

Me.

He told James to stay with me and to not leave my side once. My brother who now listened to every syllable that came out of my husband's mouth did so as infuriating as it was. He waited outside the door while I went to the bathroom, ran alongside me on my morning run, watched me train.

I had never seen him so diligent and focused, I was so proud of the change that had overcome him and it stung a little that I had missed it. Apparently, Grayson had taken some fire for him during the battle and now he believed my husband was true. All it took was a couple of arrows to the back for them to find peace.

I waited for the plan to go wrong to get the call that Grayson was horribly hurt or that one of my brothers had fallen protecting him. My mind conjured horrible images to entertain my fears as I waited for him to call.

“Don’t worry he’ll be fine,” James stated as if it was a law of the universe. It stunned me the reverence he found in Grayson now. What was he going to do when he had to go home?

I stayed in the keep the day of the meeting under James’s and my parent's orders. Amaria and Elizebeth kept me company, or at least that was their cover they were there to protect me and my son if my husband's fears were confirmed.

All those people around me, all those eyes and ears, three full-blooded alphas and I was the one to sense them first.

They were down the hall when I smelled them, how they got in I don’t know. I’m sure Grayson would find out and patch the hole the best he could.

My body acted before I realized I had felt a shift in the air and handed Christian to Amaria, my voice angry and cold. “Take him out of here,” I ordered.

My mother-in-law began to chuckle but Elizebeth saw my face and how it was no longer me in control Seraphine had the reigns and she wasn’t gentle anymore. She ushered AMaria out of the hidden door in the conference room James got into a defensive stance and She stood there waiting for them.

Lambs to slaughter, moths to the flame, whatever simile you preferred. It wouldn’t take long for them to meet their fates. A shame really considering they were only following the orders of a greedy megalomaniac.
James went to stand in front of me and I didn’t recognize my voice. “Don’t” a menacing growl ordered him to stand down.

He saw it in me they would win this fight, they wouldn’t even get the chance to beg for mercy.

“Try and keep your head,” He might have said I can’t really remember.

The doors burst open and three of them entered I don’t think they expected me to take the offensive approach and it caught them off guard giving me the advantage. The five of them spread out using tactile rifles, not the smartest decision for close combat.

I grabbed the muzzle of one of the guns and squeezed it shattering under my strength they attempted to swing a knife at me I jabbed their wrist and spun them a loud pop coming from their shoulder. What a shame I lifted her up and hauled her at two of her teammates.

Then a man tried to get me into a choke hold my claws instantly extended into his arms and he screamed his claws beginning to extend I let him go spun around slashing into his left arm grabbing him by the throat and squeezing.

Another person tried to come at me from the side but I kicked out sharply landing with their gut. The male slumped into unconsciousness in my hold and I tossed him down focusing on his friend who pulled his pistol.

My claws still extended I charged him dropping to the floor and digging into his legs and severing his Achilles tendon.

A searing pain hit my shoulder and I looked up to another pistol pointed at me. After that, any control I may have had left was forgone. I shifted and Seraphine lunged at her clamping down on her throat and tearing it apart.

James handled the other female as he took the butt of her gun and slammed it into her head the lone survivor backed up against the wall failing with fumbling hands to rack another round into his chamber. She slowly stepped toward his and he whimpered I looked away as she bit his ear off.

When I finally got control back he was dead but my son was safe. James went and found me something to wear a shirt in Graysons office. I covered myself and Elizabeth, returned by this point, as if reading my mind took Christian and handed him to me.

I looked him over no scars or scratches adorned his small skin a small saving grace for the survivors that now were headed to our soon-to-be overflowing dungeons. I headed off to my house to clean off the blood splattered across my face and arms.

I watched my child sleep as the red flooded down the drain. I couldn’t keep letting this happen though she would never hurt them this unhinged and manic behavior wasn’t safe for my baby. I had already spent too long without him I was not going to endanger him in any way.

“Luna,” Elizabeth entered the bathroom. “He’s on his way back he’s not in good condition, but he’ll be alright eventually,” SHe quickly gave me the news I needed to hear.

“And Deacon,” I couldn’t help it the horrible beast inside of me wanted him gone, in a gruesome fashion would be best.

“Alive,” Her tone of voice told me she wouldn’t judge me for being so bloodthirsty. Now my husband was injured, I had been shot…

I looked down again at my baby sound asleep not a scratch on him.

*Good. That won’t change, you won’t endure any pain from this, not one once of unease will fall upon you from this, I won’t let that happen, not after all you’ve already had to go through.

I picked him up, taking him to his crib to continue his rest. I could only imagine the fire my husband would be seeing the bullet hole on my arm. Simon had patched me up well and it would be gone in a weeks time, but I know for him it was a week too long.

Deacon couldn’t afford to let this go on any longer he hadn’t gotten to me this time, and Grayson was still alive. He only had so many chances left. It was only a matter of time before he was healed and we had him on our doorstep to finish this. There wasn’t anymore dancing around the subject the second he was healed he was coming for us.
