CHAPTER FIFTY NINE
GABRIELLE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I couldn't believe I said that.
I didn't know if I would have gone ahead with it, but I knew that I would not be able to live with myself after this if Derek died from this incident.
I tightened my hand around the gun, my heart pounding faster and harder until it threatened to break out. All the while, I heard Lucian's stare and knew the exact moment he gave in. He was bloody furious at me but I also saw the anxiety he had not been able to hide, he didn't want to guess if I would actually do it or not and it worked to my advantage.
"Fine!" He spoke in between gritted teeth, shoving Derek away roughly but not before giving him a cheap knee to the gut.
I did not rejoice on my victory, it was still far from over, the danger was still looming and currently striding towards me in heavy steps.
"Don't come closer!" I yelled, taking a step backward.
He didn't listen, he kept approaching.
"Have you lost it!? I've let go of him, let go of that gun down! Now!" He snapped, advancing another threatening step closer.
My back was nearly pressed against the wall, my legs weak from tension.
"Don't move Lucian! Or I swear I'm going to shoot! I'm going to do it if you take another step! " I cried as the gun trembled severely in my hand. This time, he stopped much to my relief.
"Brie, don't do this!" His eyes were icy with rage but his voice had a pleading note to it.
"Then don't force me! Just allow us to leave."
He didn't say anything, he didn't move closer, he was just still.
There was no time to waste.
"Move out of the way!" I yelled at the men blocking our paths, they hesitated for the briefest seconds before the path that led to the door was suddenly cleared.
I shifted my stare to Derek and was glad to see that he was still conscious and looked alright enough to walk.
I gave him the signal, trying to avoid the heat of Lucian's gaze that was scorching through my flesh.
The gun was still pointed to my head, Derek staggered towards me. Grabbing one of his hands in mine, we ran out of the room. I could hear the sound of footsteps behind us, the goal was to reach the gates, if we managed to reach outside...
"Faster! We have to go! "
We hurried towards the garage, father always had the habit of leaving the keys inside, some days he would even leave the car engines running.
"Enter!"
Derek entered inside and I sat in the driver's seat. I drove fast and recklessly, sweat and tears forming a mixture on my face.
We were allowed past the gates when the security saw the gun in my hand and finally we were outside. Lucian couldn't be too far behind, I drove faster, making several quick turns.
"Do you think that you can drive?" I asked, casting a glance on the rearview mirror, there were no cars behind us.
That was good.
"I think so."
Derek started to sit properly groaning with the pain each move caused.
"You have to make sure that you escape, I'm getting down, I'll buy you enough time."
Derek didn't respond, I had to look in his direction to ensure that he heard me, and he did.
"You're not going back! Not after we successfully got out! I won't leave you behind." He wore a determined look.
"Derek, why don't you understand? I helped you because I didn't want you to die, I couldn't bear to see you hurt!"
"Then what's the point of all that if you're going back to him!" He yelled, his face tightened in pain as he tried to move. " I have to go back! I already told you!" I whispered urgently, I needed him to go, I was certain that once Lucian finds me, he wouldn't be so interested in going after Derek.
"You told me that you love him." His voice cracked.
"I don't believe that! What about us? They separated us, remember? I should have been the one who married you, your family worked against us before, but we have another chance now, don't ruin it! "
I brought the car to a sudden halt. " The past is no more, there's no us. I only wish that you survive and move on." I started to leave the car when he caught my arm.
"Please Gabrielle, don't leave me, I love you, maybe we can..."
"Get going, there's no time!" I broke free from his grip and pushed my side of the door open, I paused only to give him a last final glance.
"And please, don't try to look for me ever again."
I stepped out of the car and exhaled aloud. I was doing the best thing for both of us.
A burst of empty laughter bubbled from my chest. I was quite stupid, after this stunt I pulled, there was no guarantee that Lucian wouldn't hurt me, he was going to make me wish I hadn't. I saved a man that once mattered the world to me but to Lucian, I let his enemy get away and punctured his pride before everyone, I knew I was in deep shit but still I found myself tracing my way back home if that wasn't foolish as well as dumb, I didn't know what to call it. I looked back and was glad to see that my father's car was no longer parked there.
Derek was gone.
The next events happened quickly.
A black sedan suddenly pulled beside me. My heart thumped in dismay when the door opened and Lucian stepped out, if he was surprised to see that I was alone, then he gave no indication.
I swallowed hard and shivered as his intense stare scanned me over. Without a word, his iron hand grip fastened around my hand.
"Lucian, you have to believe that I didn't mean that, I also didn't want to leave with him either, I just thought that he wasn't there to hurt me, and he didn't deserve to die and you would have killed him, that was why..." I was rambling uncontrollably and he didn't seem to be paying any interest in my explanation.
"I swear that I wouldn't have..." My words changed into a startled sound when I was suddenly shoved forward, I stumbled and fell on the back seat of the car. Lucian entered as well. His expression was rigid with an unpleasant scowl, it had been a long time I'd seen him being this angry.
I had forgotten what it looked like, and now it all came rushing back to me and my blood turned to ice.
The driver started the car and I wouldn't be lying if I said at this moment that I regretted not running away.
