Chapter 72 - Rebecca finds peace.
LENA SIGHED AFTER TAKING A SHOWER. She was taking Rebecca to the coven grounds for the second time. Lena was hoping if Rebecca could feel the power of the ancestors, she would stop trying to get her blood magic back. Lena’s only problem was that the ancestors could be difficult, and she wasn’t sure if they would show Rebecca that she was still powerful. She just couldn’t kill anymore.
“Rebecca, I know that you have been through a lot and I know why you want the blood magic back.” Lena let Rebecca draw the circle. “You have been let down so many times, and you have seen so many loved ones die that you think if you can do the death spell you will be able to protect yourself.” From the look in her eyes and the tears forming, Lena could tell she hit the nail right on the head. Rebecca lost a lot in her young life. It was understandable that she felt she had to protect herself. They just couldn’t allow her to protect herself by making a damn deal with the demon.
Rebecca didn’t respond to what Lena said. She had already told Lena she didn’t believe that the ancestors would help, so when they reached out through the veil, Rebecca was stunned. She stood on the other side of the veil and it was cold. She could see Lena, but Lena wasn’t moving or saying anything.
“Oh, sweetheart!” A female voice echoed around her and she gasped. The voice sounded familiar but it couldn’t be! Rebecca turned around and tears streamed down her cheeks. She instantly recognized her from her pictures in her office.
“Mother? What are you doing here?” She didn’t move. She was scared if she did it would all disappear and she just wanted to see her a little longer.
“Well, this isn’t my ancestral grounds, but we are all blood witches, so they allowed me to come here and talk to you. Sweetheart, you have to let this go. You don’t want to end up in purgatory. You don’t want to bring the hell hounds back to the rest of our family! You have become such …” Her mother took a step closer, but Rebecca took a step back.
“If you are going to tell me I’m so great, you can stop right there!” Rebecca interrupted, her mother holding up her hand. She wasn’t in the mood to listen to any of it. She wouldn’t make the same mistakes they did. If the hounds came for her, she would gladly go if it meant that she was protected while she lived!
“Rebecca, you don’t mean that. Being taken by a hell hound is … it’s …” Tears filled her eyes and Rebecca sighed.
“I know what it is, mother. I saw it happen to so many of our pack that I can’t even explain.” Rebecca waved her hand through the air and took a couple more steps away. She knew what her mother was saying. She knew that Lena was only trying to help her, but she couldn’t stop the fear she felt. It was too strange to explain. “I’m not scared of being ripped to pieces by a hell hound, but I am scared of being killed by something I don’t see coming.” Her mother nodded and Rebecca breathed deeply.
“Sweetheart, you can’t control when it’s your time.” Her mother closed the gap between them and pulled her in for a hug and Rebecca cried uncontrollably. “You can’t live the rest of your life in fear. You need to live your life. You need to find love and you need to have children. You need to let your fear go.” Her mother let her go. Rebecca nodded. She didn’t remember much about her mom, but she knew that she loved her very much. She was her mother.
“Please tell Alaric I love him and I miss him.” They could both feel the spell slowly starting to fade and, although Rebecca wanted to grab onto her mother and pull her back into the life of the living, but she couldn’t. She hugged her tightly until she could no longer feel her mom. When Rebecca turned around, she looked at Lena and tears burst out of her.
She loved her mother. She never really knew her, but she read every word her mother ever wrote and that gave her a picture of the woman who gave her life. Lena held onto Rebecca tightly until she stopped crying. Rebecca told Lena what happened on the way home and Lena was stunned. The ancestors had to have thought it was very important for Rebecca to speak to her mother for them to allow that.
The important thing was that Rebecca finally saw the light. She agreed that she wouldn’t try to make a deal with the demon again. When they got home, they spoke to Alaric who, of course, insisted they destroy all the research they had done. Rebecca could always do the research again, but if the paperwork wasn’t readily available it would make it a bit more difficult.
LENA CURLED UP IN ALARIC’S arms late that night. She breathed in his scent and, for the first time in a very long time, there were no threats! Nobody was out to kill them! There were no hell hounds, or council members who wanted to wipe them out.
She breathed in deeply for a second time and Alaric pulled her in tighter. Their lives were on track. They could make plans. They could live their lives without having to make sure they had potions at every exit of the pack house. Lena didn’t have to fear for her family’s lives anymore. Sure, they would have rogues to deal with, but it felt as if she could actually breathe easily for the first time since the war started.
Lena was grateful that the ancestors for once intervened and did something good. They were usually just plain bitchy about everything! Their lives were perfect …
