Chapter 54

Laura POV

"I stood on the balcony, holding the ray, my mind filled with possibilities and questions. I couldn't compromise the tactics of the lady who held me in her untraceable building. The cold morning breeze blew through my hair, caressing my skin with a sense of hope. 'Laura, are you okay?' Her voice snapped me out of my thoughts, and I remained still, my gaze fixed."

"Yeah, I'm fine," I muttered softly, blinking repeatedly as the breeze blew through my eyes. "Maybe I just need to know more about you to stop being confused for a second."

"About me?" she asked, her eyes fixed on mine. "Yes, about you, Ma'am Evelyn. You've been stalking me, right from my school. What do you want from me?" She sighed, grasping my arm gently. "Nothing, Laura; I don't need anything from you." Her voice was laced with concern, the low and gentle tone sinking into my ears. "I just want to help you.”

Evelyn's gentle tone and soft gaze put me at ease. I felt a sense of trust wash over me, and my fears began to dissipate. "What do you mean?" I asked, and my curiosity piqued. "How can you help me?"

She smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Let's go inside, and I'll explain everything," she said, guiding me gently towards the door. My eye scanned the environment, and with a nod, I entered the room.

"We sat on a vibrant sofa with colorful throw pillows, and I gazed around her elegantly decorated room. An ancient drawing on the wall caught my eye, and I couldn't help but giggle at a nearby sculpture with an intriguing design. 'What's the meaning behind the sculpture on the table?' I asked in a low tone, my curiosity piqued."

Evelyn smiled, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Ah, that sculpture is a piece of art from an ancient civilization, celebrating the beauty of the human form. It's a symbol of freedom and expression."

I nodded, fascinated by the story behind the sculpture. "It's beautiful," I said, my gaze still fixed on the intricate design.

Ma'am Evelyn leaned forward, her voice taking on a more serious tone. "Laura, I want to tell you something important. You have a special gift, a power that lies within you. It's a gift that can bring great joy and strength, but also great danger if not handled properly." Moreover, you've been getting rejections from your friends.

"I felt a shiver run down my spine when she mentioned'mate.' How did she know that I'd been rejected before? A surge of nervousness and tension flowed through me, leaving me momentarily stunned and frozen on the couch."

Her eyes filled with compassion, and she reached out to place a gentle hand on my arm. "Laura, I know it's hard to understand, but you have a special destiny ahead of you. One that involves a mate who will stand by your side and help you harness your power."

"No, I can't make room for a mate in my life anymore, Ma'am Evelyn," I said, tears welling up in my eyes. "Two different alphas rejected me within a year. I've had enough." I adjusted my position on the couch, sniffing softly. "I don't want a mate. My first mate was taken away from me by Arla, who manipulated Damian into falling for her. I don't want to go through that again." I smirked, raising my gaze to the ceiling.

Evelyn's expression turned sympathetic, and she nodded understandingly. "I know it's hard to trust again after being hurt, Laura. But sometimes, fate has a way of surprising us. Your mate may be closer than you think, and he may be the key to unlocking your true potential."

"I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. 'Who is it?' I asked, my voice laced with disbelief. I suddenly giggled weakly, clutching my arms tightly, feeling no sense of ease. Can we please change the subject?" I attempted to shift the conversation, but she seemed unmoved.

"What's your problem, Laura? You're too weak, which is why Arla could take Damian away from you," she said, her words piercing through me like a knife, reviving the painful memories of my past. I remained silent, staring at her with anger and hurt.

Ma'am Evelyn's words hung in the air, a harsh reminder of my past failures. I felt a surge of anger and hurt, but I refused to let her see me break. I took a deep breath and stood up, my eyes locked on hers.

"You're right," I said, my voice steady. "I was weak. But I'm not the same person I was back then. I've grown, I've learned, and I've become stronger."

She raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise on her face. "Is that so?" she asked, her tone skeptical.

I nodded, my determination evident. "Yes, it is. And I'll prove it to you. Teach me, Ma'am Evelyn, by not having a mate till the moon goddess decides my fate.”

"Do you think giving up is the best decision for someone like you to make, Laura?" She sneered, rising from the couch, her eyes fixed on the window. "I hate weak people like you." She spat the words, and I felt the heat.

"What do you want me to do?" I asked, walking up to her and placing my hands on her shoulders. She turned to me, her radiant smile showcasing the rows of her white teeth.

"I want you to embrace your true potential, Laura," Ma'am Evelyn said, her voice low and husky, a hint of a growl lurking beneath the surface. "I want you to be mine. I will protect you with everything I have, and I will help you reclaim your lost alpha, Damian, from the clutches of that insignificant girl, Arla."

Her voice sounded different from the normal tone I knew, gradually transforming into a menacing snarl, like that of a beast.

"Evelyn, are you okay?" I asked, my voice trembling with fear. But her eyes turned yellow, her pupils shrinking into slits like a beast's.

I stumbled backward, terror gripping my heart. "Is she a witch?" I whispered to myself, my mind racing with horror.
