Chapter 65: Lance POV

**“Spending time with someone can be more intimate than sex.”, - Domunique Harris**

I have never gotten dressed so fast in my life. Not even when I heard my mother come home and I had triplets in my bed when I was seventeen. Shorts, t-shirts, and sneakers, just as I was about to leave the room my phone went off. It is a text from Kay, I guess. Looking at the time of the text she sent this earlier, I just think the time change does make a difference. I text her back, a part of me feels bad that I kind of broke our contract.

I will have to do something to make it up to her, without having to explain why. When I got out of the bedroom, Karma had just finished bagging up the food. She even labeled them. Could this woman be any more organized, I thought to myself. I counted ten bags of food. And to think all of that food was about to be thrown out in the garbage.

“Ready?”, she asks.
“Yes, but give me a second while I call a car”, I said.
“A car? We don’t need a car. The shelter is a couple of blocks up. And besides, we can get a feel of the neighbor.
“You want to walk with all of these bags?’, I asked.
“Why not?”, she said with a shrug.

I grabbed all of the bags. Just to have her take five from me. We left and walked to the shelter. For the record, when a woman says a couple of blocks, she means a couple of New York blocks. However, she was right. The neighborhood looks great. As we walked,
she pointed to the cafe she was going to. As well as a jewelry store, she said she went to.

What seemed like an hour later, we reached the shelter. I knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. It took a while for someone to answer the door. A woman cracked the door open. You would think we needed a secret knock or something.

“Hello, my name is Karma Jones and this is Lance Logi. I called earlier about donating food”, Karma said to the woman who answered the door.
“Yes, you spoke to me. My name is Jan. I am sorry, ma’am, no men are allowed inside”, Jan said.
“Miss, I am only here to deliver food, nothing more”, she said.
“I understand that, but it is a security measure. How would we know if someone's husband or boyfriend was sent to spy on us?”, Jan said.
“How about you google me? You can take about my picture and do a search that way”, I said to her. I do not know this place and I will not let Karma walk in there by herself.
“Fine”, she said.

She took my picture and closed the door. Karma looks at me with a smile. We waited patiently for the woman to come back. After like ten minutes, another woman came to the door with a smile on her face. I guess my identity checked out as well as my net worth.

“Mr. Logi and Mrs., Logi. My name is Nora Jet. I am the director of the shelter”, Nora said.
“Hello Nora, like I was telling the other woman I called earlier to donate some food. But we were told by Mr. Logi can't come in”, Karma said, showing Nora the bags in her hands like she did not see them.
“Yes, it is a security measure we have here. Some of the husbands and/or boyfriends send people to find some of the residents here. But for you, Mr. And Mrs. Logi we will make an acceptation. Please come in”, Nora said.

Nora walked up to what looked like a kitchen. I grabbed Karma bags and put them on the table. Nora talks Karma's ear off, mostly about the shelter and how it is underfunded and how donations like ours make a difference. She said some of their food donations come from small restaurants that can’t legally sell food if it is close to the expiration date.

A lot of restaurants do not know the difference between sell by and use by. All of my clubs and restaurants have posters in the kitchen that define the difference. So, for those of you readers who do not know the difference, you may be throwing out food that is still good. A "Best, if Used By/Before" date, indicates when a product will have the best flavor or quality. It is not a purchase or safety date. So it is safe to keep after that date.

A "Sell-By" date tells the store how long to display the product for sale. It’s for inventory management. It is not a safety date. A "Use-By" date is the last date recommended for the use of the product while at peak quality. It is not a safety date except for when used on infant formula. A "Freeze-By" date indicates when a product should be frozen to maintain peak quality. It is not a purchase or safety date.

“I have some clubs and restaurants here in the city. If it will help you, whatever food is left over at closing. I can have them package the food for you to pick up. I said with a smile.
“That would be delightful. We feed a lot of women and children here. But we don't have working transportation to do pickups. "Usually, they bring the food to us", she said with a sad look on her face.
“Why don’t you have a working form of transpiration?”, I asked.
“Because the government cut our funding. When the last truck broke down, we could not replace it. We are short-staffed, and it is hard to get volunteers not knowing what their true intentions are”, she said.
“No worries”, Karma said.

Karma sat at the table and pulled out a checkbook. Who the hell still writes checks? Nora and I watched as Karma wrote out a check. She paused and asked who she should do the check out to.

“Athena’s House”, Nora said.
“Here you go”, Karma said. Nora looked at the check and cried.
“Mrs. Logi are you sure about this? This is a lot of money”, Nora said.

I looked at the check and it was for one hundred thousand dollars. Karma has a wonderful heart. I sent my accountant a text to tell him to send a check in the amount got one million dollars to the shelter. When he asked what to put the memo line. I told him ‘From Mr. And Mrs. Logi’. Mr. And Mrs. Logi that sounds good. I am surprised Karma did not correct her.

“Would you like a tour of the grounds?”, Nora asked.

Nora showed us to the nursery, gym, and common room, we even met some of the women and children. After our tour, Nora and Karma placed some of the pastries on a platter and took them to the common room to serve. While they did that, I took a look around the grounds.

This place needs a security system, security guards, a gardener, paintwork, and an updated kitchen. I emailed my people to find the best security system that money can buy and sent it here. On the same note, I had my accountant put in for the check. Also, I contacted a decorator to update the kitchen. Nothing else Nora could do.

“Are you okay Mr. Logi?”, Nora asked.
“Yes, in a week or so someone will come to help update the kitchen. I just want it to be repaired. Anything you need to let her know”, I said.
“I must say Mrs. Logi, you are a very lucky woman to have such a giving husband”, Nora said, making Karma blush.

Karma and I spent about two hours with Nora. I find it fascinating that the shelter was started by a prostitute in the seventh hundreds. When we left, I noticed it was already lunchtime. Karma suggested we stop to grab a bite to eat at the café we passed on the way.
